Travel can be hectic, so finding a quiet place to relax before a flight can feel like a luxury. If you're flying on an eligible United Polaris business-class ticket — or in a premium cabin on select Star Alliance airlines — you may be able to access a United Polaris lounge before your flight.
Known for elevated dining, premium drinks, and upscale amenities, Polaris lounges are among the best business-class lounges in the United States.
Here's what to expect and how to gain access.

United Clubs vs. Polaris Lounges
Like other major U.S. airlines, United now operates two different types of lounges. The first tier consists of United Clubs, which are available to:
- Premium-cabin passengers on select routes
- United Club members
- Travelers with one-time passes
- Eligible Star Alliance Gold members
United describes these lounges as its “standard club offering.”
While United Clubs provide a comfortable place to relax away from the terminal, they generally offer a more basic experience than United's premium Polaris lounges.

United reserves its Polaris lounges for travelers flying in United Polaris business class and eligible premium cabins on select Star Alliance partners. Even though there are only a handful of Polaris lounge locations, they offer a significantly more premium experience than United Clubs.
Amenities can include shower suites, private day beds, buffet dining and restaurant-style meals in dedicated dining areas.

One way that Polaris Lounges stand out is by offering seated a la carte dining. However, in my experience, the food quality can be hit or miss from one Polaris Lounge to another.

United Airlines Polaris Lounge Locations
Polaris lounges are far less common than United Clubs. While United operates more than 40 United Club locations, there are only six Polaris lounges:
- Chicago O'Hare (ORD):
- Location: Concourse C, near Gate C18
- Houston Intercontinental (IAH)
- Location: Terminal E, between the United Club and Gate E12
- Los Angeles (LAX):
- Location: Terminal 7, between Gates 73 and 75A
- Newark (EWR):
- Location: Terminal C, after security screening between Gates C102 and C120
- San Francisco (SFO):
- Location: International Terminal, across from the security checkpoint near the G gates
- Washington Dulles (IAD):
- Location: Midfield Terminal, Concourse C, near Gate C17
There's also an arrivals lounge at London-Heathrow (LHR) exclusively for United Polaris business-class passengers, which is located immediately after customs and immigration. While it's not a full-blown Polaris Lounge, it does offer many of the same amenities like showers and complimentary breakfast.
Operating hours vary by location and are based on arriving and departing United flights with Polaris service. Your best resource for up-to-date information will always be United's website.
Plan your connection to access Polaris Lounges
If you're flying United or an eligible Star Alliance partner airline on a long-haul international itinerary, it's worth checking whether you'll connect through one of the airports above. Polaris Lounges offer a significantly more premium experience than United Clubs and can make a long layover much more comfortable.
If your itinerary doesn't pass through a Polaris Lounge location, you'll likely find a United Club at many other major United airports.
How to Access United Airlines Polaris Lounges
Not every business-class ticket on United Airlines opens the doors to a Polaris Lounge. You'll need to be traveling on an eligible premium-cabin ticket
The following premium-cabin passengers can get into a United Polaris Lounge:
- Standard or flexible fares on business-class tickets on United Polaris-branded routes (including some select transcontinental and Hawaiian routes) on departure, connecting, and on arrival
- First-class tickets on Lufthansa, SWISS, or ANA (on departure only)
- Business-class tickets on ANA, Air New Zealand, or ITA Airways (on departure only)
- Eligible business-class tickets on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, or Brussels Airlines (on departure only)
Travelers flying first class on Lufthansa, SWISS, or ANA can bring one guest along. United Polaris passengers and travelers flying in eligible business class on other Star Alliance partners do not receive guest privileges.
Who does not have access to United Polaris Lounges?
United recently tightened access to its Polaris lounges. Most notably, travelers flying on a United Polaris Base fare no longer receive Polaris Lounge access and will instead be directed to a United Club when one is available.
The airline also eliminated Polaris Lounge access for most Star Alliance partner premium-cabin passengers. Travelers flying first or business class on airlines such as Asiana, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, EgyptAir, and EVA Air no longer receive complimentary access. Only the partner airlines specifically listed in the section above remain eligible for Polaris Lounge entry.
Can you pay to get into a United Polaris Lounge?
Unlike United Club locations, United does not offer an option to access Polaris Lounges via a paid day pass.
Can you access a Polaris Lounge on international arrival?
United Polaris business-class passengers can access Polaris lounges on departure, during a connection and upon arrival.
For example, if you're flying from Seattle to Houston and then onward to Buenos Aires in United Polaris business class, you'll have access to the Polaris Lounge in Houston before your international flight.
Arrival access is a bit more nuanced. Because Polaris lounges are located beyond security checkpoints, you'll typically need to be in a secure area to access one after landing. For example, a traveler flying from Europe to Houston via Newark in United Polaris business class could visit the Polaris Lounge in Newark during the connection and again upon arrival in Houston.
Bottom Line
United Polaris lounges offer a significantly more premium experience than standard United Clubs, with amenities such as elevated dining, shower suites and private day beds. However, access is limited to travelers flying in United Polaris business class and a small group of eligible Star Alliance premium cabins.
Before you travel, confirm that your ticket qualifies for access — especially if you're considering a United Polaris Base fare, which no longer includes Polaris Lounge privileges.
