How the offer check actually works
Amex's application process works differently from most issuers. Instead of a flat “approved or denied,” you'll see your specific welcome offer before you commit to anything:
- Find out your offer amount without any impact on your credit
- Decide whether to accept the card at that offer
- Spend $15,000 in your first 3 months of Card Membership
- Receive your
pointsAmex Membership Rewards
If you are not happy with your offer, you walk away with nothing on your credit report. Your score is only affected once you accept.
What 200,000 Membership Rewards points are worth
Point counts don't mean much on their own. Based on AwardWallet's own redemption data across 31,000+ Amex transfers, AwardWallet users typically get around 2.03¢ per point when redeeming Membership Rewards, mostly through transfers to Amex’s travel partners. At that rate, a 200,000-point welcome offer is around $4,000 in travel value, on top of whatever you'd normally earn from $15,000 of business spend.

Where the earning rate pays off
You'll earn 4X points on your top two spending categories each month (from six eligible categories), up to $150,000 combined per year. If your business is already paying for software subscriptions, running ads, or covering a team's wireless bills, this card is earning at 4X on money you're spending anyway.
Beyond that: 3X on flights and prepaid hotels through amextravel.com, 1X everywhere else.
Here's the list of bonus categories:
- U.S. purchases for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio).
- U.S. purchases made from electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers.
- U.S. purchases at gas stations.
- U.S. purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery.
- Transit purchases, including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways.
- Monthly wireless telephone service charges made directly from a wireless telephone service provider in the U.S.

The annual fee math
The $375 annual fee (Rates & Fees) looks steep in isolation. Run the numbers on the credits and it's close to a wash before the welcome offer even factors in:
- $240 flexible business credit: Earn up to $20 in statement credits each month when you use your card for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx (through 10/01/2026), Grubhub, and office supply stores.
- Walmart+ monthly membership credit: Receive up to $12.95 per month plus applicable taxes for a monthly Walmart+ membership you charge to your card.
Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.
That's up to $395 in credits against a $375 fee, assuming you use both.
Add in no foreign transaction fees (Rates & Fees), purchase protection, extended warranty, trip delay reimbursement, and baggage insurance, and the fee is doing very little work against what the card actually returns.
Spending, purchase, travel, and protection benefits
Cardholders can also enjoy several additional benefits courtesy of the Amex Business Gold:
- No preset spending limit
- No foreign transaction fees (Rates & Fees)
- Experience credits and elite-like benefits on 2+ night stays booked at The Hotel Collection properties through Amex Travel
- Trip delay reimbursement
- Extended warranty
- Purchase protection
- Baggage insurance
- Secondary car rental loss and damage insurance
- Cell phone protection
- Global Assist Hotline

Final Thoughts
This American Express® Business Gold Card isn't a fit for every business. If you're not running $15,000 through it in three months, the welcome offer isn't reachable, and the category bonuses assume real ad, software, or wireless spend to matter.
But if that spend is already happening, checking your offer costs you a minute and nothing on your credit report. Given offers are running as high as 200,000 points right now, that's worth doing before deciding either way.

200k for 10k spend in 90 days, approved immediately. Wild! I’ll get $5500+ in value flying to Hawaii with Avios transfers on this.
Clicked through, logged in, got 200k offer with 10k spend, approved immediately. Insane.
Awesome! Congrats on the great offer.
Locked in 200kMR for 15k spend in 90 days on the biz gold on September 11th. Was just on the AmericanExpress website offers. No mail, no email, just there to apply. A few weeks earlier it was 175k but I wasn’t sure I’d be able to hit the spend until an event vendor filed for bankruptcy and we had to find a new one in a flash and pay all new deposits. Boom, minimum spend hit in a single transaction
I referred my wife through my page and she got an incredible offer of 200,000 points after spending $15 k in 3 months….Yes please!
Interesting that this is being touted as a new, elevated bonus. I was approved for the biz Gold on 6/15/24, for a 100,000 point SUB with a spend of only $10,000 in 3 months. 🤷
Amex is getting wild with its targeted card offers. Back when you applied, the minimum offer was 70k but you were clearly targeted for 100k. Now, the minimum offer is 100k but some AwardWallet readers are reporting getting as much as 150k through our links. It makes it tough to tell readers what to expect!
Wild indeed. I actually received a targeted mailed offer for 175K for $10K spend. Just got approved last week. Crazy (but most welcome!).
Same except online and $15k spend, and once I clicked the 175k and got it, the same link showed a 200k offer lol!
