Paying interest on a credit card balance? A 0% introductory annual percentage rate (APR) offer could give you time to pay it down without adding interest to the amount you transfer. The key is finding a card with a transfer fee and repayment window that work for you.

Start with the offers below. Compare the cost, check that your balance is eligible, and choose a repayment timeline you can manage.

Before you choose: Note that you generally can’t transfer a balance between cards from the same issuer. If you’re paying interest on a Citi card, for example, only consider offers from another bank.

How to narrow the list: Compare the transfer fee with how much time you need to repay. For example, the Citi Double Cash combines a lower introductory transfer fee with an 18-month window. Wells Fargo Reflect gives you longer to repay, but charges a higher transfer fee.

Citi Double Cash: A Lower Transfer Fee With More Time to Repay

The Citi Double Cash (Rates & Fees) offers a 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months, then a variable rate of 18.49% - 28.74% - There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, your fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).

For a $5,000 transfer completed during the introductory fee window, the fee is $150. That's $100 less than a card charging a 5% balance transfer fee.

Keep in mind: This introductory APR offer does not apply to purchases, and carrying a transferred balance can mean paying interest on new purchases. Save the card’s cash-back benefits for after you’ve paid off the transfer.

The Citi Double Cash is a dynamic, no-annual-fee cash-back rewards card that allows you to earn 2% traditional cash back, or convert your rewards to ThankYou Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio (2x ThankYou points per $1). When paired with a premium ThankYou Rewards earning card, the Citi Double Cash is now the best card available for everyday, non-bonus purchases.

If you're looking to pay down debt or finance a larger purchase, this card also comes with one of the best available introductory APR offers on balance transfers.

Wells Fargo Reflect: A Longer Repayment Window

The Wells Fargo Reflect® Card (Rates & Fees) offers 0% intro APR for 21 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers. 17.74%, 24.24%, or 28.49% variable APR thereafter; balance transfers made within 120 days qualify for the intro rate, BT fee of 5%, min: $5.

Although the Wells Fargo Reflect charges a higher balance transfer fee, it can be worth considering if a shorter offer would leave you with a balance when its introductory rate ends. A qualifying $5,000 transfer would incur a $250 fee, bringing your balance to $5,250. With 21 monthly payments remaining in the introductory period, paying $250 per month would clear that balance without interest, assuming no additional charges.

Work Out Your Monthly Payment Before You Apply

A longer introductory offer can make payments more manageable, but a lower transfer fee can reduce what you owe. Here’s how the trade-off looks for a $5,000 balance:

Illustrative offerTransfer feeTotal to repayMonthly payoff target
3% transfer fee
15 monthly payments
$150$5,150$344
3% transfer fee
18 monthly payments
$150$5,150$287
5% transfer fee
21 monthly payments
$250$5,250$250

These examples assume a 0% intro APR throughout the repayment period, no annual fee, no new charges, and the full number of payments shown remaining after the transfer posts. Payments are rounded up to the nearest dollar; the final payment may be smaller. These are payoff targets, not the issuer’s required minimum payments.

For your own plan, add the transfer fee to the amount you’re moving, then divide by the number of payments you can make before the introductory rate expires. Allow a little extra room if you can. If you also use the card for purchases, include that spending in your payoff plan; the examples here only cover the transferred balance and transfer fee.

If you could repay the existing balance quickly, compare the interest you’d pay by keeping it where it is with the transfer fee. A balance transfer isn’t automatically the cheaper option.

Before You Transfer a Balance

  • Check the issuer and your eligibility. The bank behind the card matters, including for airline, hotel, and store cards. Review restrictions on transfers and introductory offers before applying.
  • Leave room for the fee. Approval doesn’t guarantee enough available credit to transfer your full balance. Transfer limits can be lower than your credit limit, and the fee can use part of that limit.
  • Keep paying the old card. Continue making payments until you confirm the transfer has posted. Check the following statement for any remaining interest or charges.
  • Set a payoff target, not just autopay for the minimum. Minimum payments may leave a substantial balance when the introductory offer ends. At that point, the regular APR applies to the remaining balance.
  • Be careful with new purchases. A balance transfer offer may not include an introductory purchase APR. Carrying the transferred balance also can affect your purchase grace period. Balance transfers generally don’t earn rewards or count toward a welcome offer’s spending requirement.
