Head on over to the Garuda Indonesia buy miles portal to get started. Once there, you can scroll down until you find the dropdown menu for how many GarudaMiles you would like to purchase. You can buy up to 150,000 GarudaMiles (before any applicable bonus) at any time.

Once you select the number of GarudaMiles you want, check the terms and conditions box, then click the “Buy Miles” button to proceed with your order.

While you can purchase up to 150,000 miles in a single transaction, you can purchase up to 250,000 GarudaMiles per year (before any applicable bonus). So, you can make multiple transactions if you need more miles.

When Should You Buy Points and Miles?

Our frequent AwardWallet readers are probably thinking, “These guys sound like a broken record!” when it comes to our stance on buying points and miles. But we feel it's worth mentioning again that we are not proponents of buying points and miles, at least without a plan. Even when an airline is offering a bonus or discount promotion, you shouldn't immediately reach for your wallet.

Instead, we prefer to earn miles and points organically. For most loyalty programs, you're better off growing your balance through top credit card offers and leveraging transfer partners.

Now that you've purchased your GarudaMiles, it's time to redeem them! You can head over to the redemption portal and select which method you'd like to redeem them for.

You can redeem GarudaMiles for a wide array of options, including flights and hotels, donations to charitable causes, shopping in one of the many shopping centers or catalogs offered by Garuda, food & beverage, sustainability, and more.

The most valuable way to redeem GarudaMiles is usually for award flights. Garuda Indonesia still publishes an award chart, which you can view here (PDF link). Alternatively, you can tinker with the “Miles Calculator” in the Garuda Indonesia mobile app to estimate award pricing for any given route.

But to give you a sense of pricing, here are a few sample award rates:

These rates aren’t overly inspiring, but you might find better value by using GarudaMiles to upgrade an economy ticket to business class. For example, upgrading from economy to business on the Jakarta to Amsterdam route costs between 48,000 and 60,000 miles, and purchasing an economy fare plus miles to upgrade could work out to be far cheaper than booking business class outright.

Other Ways To Earn Garuda Indonesia Airline Miles

As with most other airlines, credit card spending has traditionally been the easiest way to earn GarudaMiles — even for U.S. residents. However, since Citi ThankYou Rewards removed GarudaMiles as a transfer partner in 2019, it hasn't been possible for U.S. residents to earn flexible points and then transfer miles to GarudaMiles.

So, if you are a resident of Indonesia, you should focus on earning points for your everyday spending with any of these cards: Garuda BNI Visa Signature Credit Card, Garuda Indonesia Citi Card, and the Mandiri Garuda Debit Card.

Another easy path to earning GarudaMiles is through eligible bookings on Garuda Indonesia flights! Just make sure that when you book a Garuda flight, you enter your GarudaMiles number in the passenger information field. It usually takes around 7 days after the flight to receive the miles in your account. What's cool about Garuda is that you can claim any missing miles retroactively within 6 months after the flight date by using the app or website to follow the prompts for claiming missing miles.

Another way to earn GarudaMiles is through paid airfare from SkyTeam Airlines to Garuda Indonesia. This includes flights paid on Air France & KLM Flying Blue, Delta, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, and many more.

Lastly, you can accrue GarudaMiles when you book a stay at one of the many hotel partners with which Garuda is partnered. The two main giants that Garuda has connections with are Accor ALL and Hilton Honors.
