No doubt that one of the least enjoyable parts of air travel is airport security. However, there's a straightforward way to speed your way through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints: TSA PreCheck. For a minimal cost — or free if you use the right card — you can enroll in TSA PreCheck to speed through airport security.
PreCheck just got a bit more valuable today with the addition of two more participating airlines: Caribbean Airlines and RED Air.
That makes now a great time to review why you should enroll in PreCheck, all 100 participating airlines, and the credit cards that will reimburse the cost of your TSA PreCheck application as a cardholder benefit.

What is TSA PreCheck?
By enrolling in TSA PreCheck, travelers get to skip the normal shoes-off liquids-out slow-moving standard airport security screening. Instead, you use a dedicated security lane where you just plop your bags on the belt and walk through a normal metal detector.
Clear security in under 5 minutes
Almost all TSA PreCheck travelers clear through security in less than 5 minutes. In fact, according to TSA data, 99% of PreCheck passengers wait less than 10 minutes to clear security.
Over 200 airports with TSA PreCheck
More than 200 airports offer TSA PreCheck screening lanes, including all major airports in the U.S. The TSA website has an interactive map of all participating airports.
How to get TSA PreCheck
TSA PreCheck is available to U.S. citizens, nationals, and legal permanent residents. All you need to do to enroll is take 5 minutes to fill out and submit an online application. Then, you'll schedule a background check appointment at one of 380+ enrollment centers where you will be fingerprinted. Assuming you successfully complete your background check, you will be enrolled in the PreCheck program within a couple of weeks.
Once you are enrolled, you will be assigned a Known Traveler Number, which can be added to your frequent flyer accounts and/or air travel reservations so that airlines are aware of your membership. This will allow participating airlines to add a PreCheck indicator on your boarding pass. That will allow you to use the PreCheck security lines at participating airports.
How much is TSA PreCheck?
What would you pay for five years of not needing to remove your shoes, laptop, liquids, belts, and light jackets when going through TSA? The great news is that the application fee is quite reasonable: $78 — which is just under $16 per year.
Even better, you can get this application fee refunded if you charge the application fee to one of the dozens of credit cards. We will show you how further down in this post. So, don't head over to the PreCheck application page quite yet!
Is Global Entry Better Than PreCheck?
Global Entry is a program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Global Entry membership includes enrollment in TSA PreCheck. At $120, the Global Entry application fee is $42 higher than the TSA PreCheck application fee. The Global Entry membership period is also 5-years long.
If you fly internationally at least once within a 5-year period, Global Entry membership is likely the better choice. However, there are fewer Global Entry enrollment centers, so it can be harder for some travelers to enroll in Global Entry. If you're an infrequent international traveler, enrolling in PreCheck may be the more practical option.

The number of airlines participating in the TSA PreCheck program has grown significantly over the past few years. In May 2016, only 12 airlines participated in PreCheck. Since then, we have seen a massive expansion:

Bottom Line
TSA PreCheck can be worth it for even the infrequent traveler. Sure, you need to fill out an application and go through a screening, but both should only take a few minutes. And the small amount of cost and effort to enroll in TSA PreCheck can really pay off in time savings (and less frustration) at the airport.
If you travel internationally, you're likely better off enrolling in Global Entry. You'll get all of the benefits of TSA PreCheck along with being able to speed through immigration when re-entering the United States. The only downside is needing to schedule an interview at a limited number of locations.
If you're a points and miles collector, it's likely that you already have a credit card that will refund the application fee. Just pay for your application or renewal fee with one of the credit cards mentioned above to receive a credit reimbursing you for the fee. And, if you already have TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, you can use your card to pay for someone else's application fee. Just make sure to carefully read the terms and limitations on your card before doing so.

Thanks. I recently flew Hawaiian airlines and wonder if anyone else has had an issue with their pre-check operations. My Hawaiian profile has my known traveler number as does my profile for all other airlines I fly. When I check in on line and print my boarding passes, the pre-check status shows up. However, for my most recent flights originating with Hawaiian, the Boarding passes did not show pre-check, until the Gate agent issued new passes with the number from my profile. At both airports, the agents said it was a Hawaiian airlines software issue. Have others had this issue with Hawaiian or other airlines?

It would be helpful to list out the authorized user fees for each of these credit cards, and if authorized users would receive additional GlobalEntry/TSAPre fee credit.
The $0 annual fee on the HSBC Premier World MC is a little misleading because it requires an HSBC Premier Checking account as well which needs to have $75k in it or $5k deposited each month. Still great benefit if you have any of these cards.
I got global right before covid hit. Dang diseases. I have yet to use it but I normally travel international often so it’s the best for me. Not if I could just feel safe enough to go somewhere.
At this point I’m curious which airlines don’t offer precheck.
Also, I wish credits cards allowed you to use the Global Entry and Precheck credit to cover Nexus. The fee for Nexus is only $50, versus $100 for global entry. Nexus membership still includes access to global entry and precheck.
I’ve always struggled with TSA precheck
Just used the Venture X card to get Global Entry reimbursement. If you’re doing TSA Pre Check, just pay the 15 bucks extra for Global Entry. If you ever want or plan on traveling internationally, its absolutely worth it.
Global Entry is totally worth it. If you travel frequently, Clear may be worth it too.
Looking at the credit card list, for most cases it makes sense to pay the annual fee given the TSA precheck benefit, it is such a time saver, definitely worth it. Global entry has saved me many hours of hassle when traveling internationally!
It’s also interesting to see that Clear is making headway as well, I wonder if many of these cards will include it as part of their benefits, besides TSA precheck/Global entry.

Don’t know what I would do without TSA precheck. Just went through Orlando security in 5 minutes. The HSBC Mastercard looks like a good deal with no annual fee.
Having TSA precheck has been a godsend, I’ve been able to clear security multiple times with wait times less than 5 minutes.
The IHG rewards club card is my personal favorite for getting TSA Pre-Check reimbursement. Pre-Check and Global entry are way worth it if you’re flying at all these days…and if you can get it paid for free, so much the better….go for it if you don’t have it yet.
TSA precheck is definitely worth it with some of the major airports experiencing significant delays for going through security.

I just realized that my Global Entry is going to expire next year. I will have to renew it and I appreciate the fact that I won’t have to pay for it. The Global Entry/TSA precheck combination is such a help as a traveler, I can’t imagine being without them.

I have a NEXUS card, which provides trusted traveler program privileges to enter Canada as well as the USA. Despite the fact that NEXUS includes both Global Entry and TSA Precheck privileges, it costs only $50 (in both US and Canadian Dollars). As far as I know, no USA credit card covers the NEXUS application fee unless a request to grant an exception is made (as Chase Sapphire Reserve did for me).
TSA precheck makes traveling thru certain airports bearable like DIA and it’s funneling all passengers thru a single checkpoint. Also, for Phx I prefer the food choices opposite of southwest so instead of that long walk I cut thru tsa
I have multiple cards that cover the fee and happily use TSA pre-check weekly and global entry every time I travel internationally (not for the past year but before that it was four or five times a year) this article made me realize that mine is probably coming up for renewal. How does it work with kids?
According to TSA: “Children 12 and under can accompany a parent or guardian who has TSA PreCheck on their boarding pass. Travelers 13 and older who do not have a TSA PreCheck boarding pass must go through standard security lanes or apply for TSA PreCheck.”

Wish Amex Gold would offer this, I already used up my once every 4 years time on United Explorer Card. Went for Global Entry, worth the extra $15.
The only question I have regarding this is what about people with counterfeit records, will the pre clearance actually catch these people.
I applied and received the Southwest rapid rewards performance business card. One of the perks of the card was free TSA pre-check. I applied for the TSA pre-check and received it immediately. Love TSA pre-check!

That’s certainly what happened with some lounges when access was expanded. The experience was degraded.
I had Global Entry for years, let it lapse while I was in college, and then renewed it quickly and easily when I met my beautiful “Amex Platinum”, and redeemed the credit. lol The only reason to choose PreCheck over GE is if it’s a real hassle to get the interview, because saving $15 you aren’t being charged anyway…is pointless.

TSA Pre-check and Global Entry are worth every penny…even better when your credit card covers the fee!
I applied for Global Entry back in July 2019, because I’m British citizen it longer for the conditional approval to process, my wife who is US citizen was approved within 2 weeks, but I got approved in Feb 2020. I have only just managed to get an appointment to clear the final hurdle and today was approved for Global Entry. Took long enough but I think it will be worth once I start flying again.
So Precheck needs an appointment too? Ugh. I tried four years ago to get GE but there was zero availability before my move date which was still six months away at that point. Paid the fee but never got it.
How about Amex Platinum Delta cards (both personal and biz)? I think they both provide the GE/TSA credit every 4 years as well.
They do! I was looking at an outdated page on Amex’s website that didn’t list them (https://www.americanexpress.com/us/travel/benefits/expedite-your-travel.html). But that is a perk that’s been added to these cards and I’ve added them to the list now.
