Qatar Airways continues to make significant progress in installing Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet, but it just changed who can access it. What was initially announced as free Wi-Fi for all passengers will now only be available to Privilege Club members. Luckily, the loyalty program is free to join, and there are reasons beyond getting free Wi-Fi to create a free account.
Here’s what you need to know about the current and upcoming Wi-Fi options on Qatar Airways flights.
Timeline for Qatar Airways Starlink Wi-Fi Installation
In 2023, Qatar Airways announced plans to install Starlink on its fleet, and it's been a multi-year process. By October 2024, Qatar was the world's first airline to put Starlink on a Boeing 777. It finished the B777 rollout in June 2025, and by December, it launched the world’s first Starlink-equipped Boeing 787-8. Just a few days later, Qatar Airways finished the Airbus A350 rollout.
As of mid-2026, there are more than 140 Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft in operation, flying to over 130 destinations worldwide with up to 266 daily Starlink-enabled flights. Qatar Airways has finished retrofitting Starlink Wi-Fi across all Airbus A350, Boeing 777, and Boeing 787-8 aircraft. That makes the widebody rollout about 80% complete.
Qatar plans to retrofit the full widebody fleet by the end of 2026, which means the B787-9 rollout is next.
At this time, passengers can access free Starlink Wi-Fi on B777, A350 and B787 flights to and from the following cities in the U.S.:
- Atlanta
- Boston
- Chicago
- Dallas/Fort Worth
- Houston
- Los Angeles
- Miami
- New York
- San Francisco
- Seattle
- Washington D.C.
As well as the following cities in the Americas:
- Montreal, Canada
- São Paulo, Brazil
- Toronto, Canada
We aren't sure what Qatar's plan is for the remaining widebody aircraft in its fleet — the Airbus A330 and A380. Qatar appears to be phasing out its A330's, so they will likely not get the service. It hasn't confirmed whether the A380 will get Starlink, but hopefully it will. The same goes for Qatar's narrowbody aircraft; the Airbus A320 should get Starlink as well, but falls to the bottom of the priority list.
Starlink access requirements
When Qatar Airways first announced free Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet, the plan was for all passengers to get access. However, the airline recently changed its access requirements that you should be aware of before boarding your next flight.
Now, only Privilege Club members get access to free Wi-Fi on the entire flight. Other passengers can access free Starlink Wi-Fi for just 45 minutes. Luckily, you can use your free 45 minutes of internet to sign up for Privilege Club and enjoy access for the remainder of the flight.
The exception to this change is flights to China, Hong Kong, and Japan. All passengers on these flights can access Starlink Wi-Fi, regardless of whether they are signed into the Privilege Club. Regardless, you should sign up for the Privilege Club program so you can earn Avios on your flight.
What is Starlink Aviation Wi-Fi?
Starlink offers high-speed, in-motion Wi-Fi connections via SpaceX's satellite network. Many other airlines, including the Lufthansa Group, Emirates, United, Hawaiian Airlines, airBaltic, Air New Zealand, JSX, and ZIPAIR, have already installed or are planning to install Starlink — and the reviews have been stellar.
Starlink Aviation is the Starlink brand for aircraft. Currently, there are more than 10,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, with thousands more planned for launch in the next few years.
Initially, the service offered download speeds ranging from 40 to 200 Mbps and upload speeds from 8 to 25 Mbps. However, second-generation Starlink speeds up to 500 Mbps per aircraft. Perhaps Business Class passengers will be prioritized, with the average passenger receiving around 100 Mbps.
The service also features a very low latency (the time between the source and destination) of less than 0.1 seconds. In other words, it's fast and not laggy.
Qatar Airways Wi-Fi Availability and Cost on Flights Without Starlink
On flights that do not yet have Starlink Wi-Fi, Qatar Airways offers limited Wi-Fi access, and speeds are notoriously slow. This Wi-Fi is only available on certain aircraft, such as the Airbus A380.
All Privilege Club members — including base-level Burgundy members — receive 1 hour of complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi. Meanwhile, Qatar Student Club members enjoy unlimited high-speed internet on board.
For those who don’t qualify for free access, Wi-Fi passes start at $10 — with a 20% discount if purchased before the flight. Fortunately, when the Starlink retrofit is complete, everyone will have free access to high-speed Wi-Fi.
If you aren't a student and need more than one hour of connection, several credit cards offer airline incidental credits that can cover your onboard Wi-Fi purchase. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® (Rates & Fees) offers a $300 travel credit.
That's enough to cover Qatar Wi-Fi purchases on at least 30 flights. Just note that some cards limit reimbursements of incidental credits, so check your benefits before making your purchase.

Existing Qatar onboard data roaming and entertainment
If you don't want to pay for Wi-Fi, you have the option to use your mobile data plan to roam until Qatar makes its Wi-Fi free for everyone. Simply connect to the OnAir or AeroMobile network and enable data roaming on your phone. Your service provider will bill you at normal roaming rates — which might be considerably higher than paying for Wi-Fi.
If you just want to watch movies, you don't need data or Wi-Fi. The Oryx One entertainment system offers movies, TV shows, music, and games. The catalog is robust and includes numerous recent Hollywood blockbusters.
Our Take
As a digital nomad, staying as connected as possible is vital. I'm always happy to find blazingly fast connections in remote villages, thanks to services like Starlink. Now, I'm excited to see airlines offering free Wi-Fi on long-haul flights so I can use that time for productivity.
For the ninth time in the past 15 years, Qatar Airways was once again named the best airline in the world by SkyTrax. Free Wi-Fi via Starlink will further enhance its reputation. Starlink is an incredible Wi-Fi service anywhere you use it, and having it on board your flight will greatly enhance your productivity or gaming experience if you prefer to relax during your flight.
We'll continue to update this article as more details emerge. Qatar Airways is currently ahead of schedule by several months in integrating Starlink into its fleet. We are optimistic that Qatar will complete its goal of outfitting the entire fleet with Starlink by the end of 2026, if not sooner.
