Between TSA PreCheck, CLEAR, and airline-specific programs, travelers now have multiple ways to speed through checkpoints. The latest addition is TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, a facial-recognition option that lets you move through security, bag drop, and even boarding without pulling out a physical ID.

The program is already live at 65 U.S. airports, and it just got a whole lot easier to opt in and use, thanks to a new partnership with Google Wallet.

Here’s how TSA PreCheck Touchless ID works, where you can use it, and whether it’s worth opting into on your next trip.

What Is TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is a facial-recognition screening program that TSA PreCheck members can opt into. It allows travelers to verify their identity without presenting a physical ID at select checkpoints.

The program started as Delta Digital ID in 2021, but it has grown rapidly and is now available at 65 airports. Previously, you could only use the program if you were flying with an airline that partnered with TSA PreCheck Touchless ID at select airports and terminals. Those airlines include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines.

However, thanks to a new partnership with Google Wallet, eligible passengers can now use TSA PreCheck Touchless ID with any of the more than 100 TSA PreCheck airlines at participating airports nationwide. Google Wallet is the first digital wallet to partner with Touchless ID, so fingers crossed that Apple users will be able to access quick enrollment and use of Touchless ID in the near future. Until then, Apple users will have to stick with Apple Digital ID.

Touchless ID is a free additional service for TSA PreCheck members. TSA PreCheck is available at over 1,300 locations and helps you get through security lines in 10 minutes or less. You can purchase a membership for as little as $76.75. You can also claim a free or discounted TSA PreCheck membership with numerous credit cards.

How to Enroll in TSA PreCheck Touchless ID

Signing up for Touchless ID is quite straightforward. You still have the option to manually opt in to Touchless ID with each airline, but you can now also opt in through Google Wallet.

Through an airline

Each airline's dashboard is a little different, but the steps are the same:

  • In your airline profile, enter your Known Traveler Number
  • Enter your valid passport number and country
  • Select “OPT IN” on your profile or at check-in with a participating airline.

Through Google Wallet

If you use Google Wallet, follow the following steps:

  • Check in with a participating airline and add your boarding pass to your Google Wallet.
  • If you have an eligible digital ID, you will see a “Get started” button in your Google Wallet. Click that button.
  • You will be redirected to a TSA consent page where you can authorize the sharing of your digital ID and boarding pass in Google Wallet with TSA.
  • TSA will confirm enrollment and send a success code to Google Wallet.
  • Your boarding pass in Google Wallet will be updated with the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID indicator.

Using TSA PreCheck Touchless ID

To enter the dedicated Touchless ID lane, the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID indicator must appear on your mobile boarding pass. Of course, Touchless ID won't work if you don't have a digital boarding pass.

At participating airports, you will see two TSA PreCheck lanes: one for the regular security lane and one for Touchless ID. Just show your mobile boarding pass when you enter the Touchless ID lane. Stand at the Touchless ID spot to have your photo taken, and then proceed to baggage screening.

Remember to bring backup ID, either a passport or a physical REAL-ID card, as you could be asked for it by a TSA officer.

Our Take

As airport security lines grow more unpredictable, tools like TSA PreCheck Touchless ID can help streamline the process. If you’re already enrolled in TSA PreCheck, opting in could make your airport experience smoother. With the new partnership with Google Wallet, passengers now have a more efficient way to opt in when flying with any TSA PreCheck-approved airline, which is a fantastic development.

You also have other airline security fast-track options, such as CLEAR+, if your airport does not yet offer Touchless ID.
