MGM Resorts International is the world’s largest casino company and operates a host of properties around the world. The company is headquartered in Paradise, Nevada, and operates some of the most iconic hotels on the Las Vegas Strip.

Like many other hotel brands, MGM Resorts has its own loyalty program, MGM Rewards, which features its own points currency and expiration policy. Here is all you need to know about whether MGM Rewards expire.

Do MGM Rewards Expire?

MGM Rewards points and SLOT DOLLARS will expire for Sapphire members who have no activity on their account for a period of six months. Per the MGM Rewards FAQ page:

What counts as activity

MGM has a very tight definition of what counts as activity toward keeping your balance active. The only two things that are considered are earning SLOT DOLLARS or Tier Credits. Again, per the program’s rule page:

“accumulated SLOT DOLLARS® and MGM Rewards Points may be subject to forfeiture if the member’s MGM Rewards account does not reflect any activity (which means earning SLOT DOLLARS® or earning Tier Credits) “

Exceptions to MGM Rewards Expiration

Remember that the expiration policy only applies to Sapphire-level members of MGM Rewards. If you hold any of the following statuses, your MGM Rewards Points and SLOT DOLLARS balance will not expire.

  • Pearl
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Noir

How To Earn MGM SLOT DOLLARS and Tier Credits

To keep your balance active, you will have to earn either Tier Credits or SLOT DOLLARS. Tier credits are earned for gaming and non-gaming spend at any MGM properties. This can include expenses such as food and beverages, spa and salon services, and more.

SLOT DOLLARS are earned by playing any of the following three activities.

  • Slot machines.
  • Video poker machines.
  • Video lottery terminals.

Our Take

Six months is on the short end of things. So, if you are an MGM fan, you will need to focus on either achieving a higher status or maintaining your activity level at the required level. That said, several online data points indicate that MGM is quite lax in implementing its expiration policy, so you may get lucky!
