The days of waiting for a widely accessible mid-tier American Airlines credit card are officially over. The all-new Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard® is now open for applications, and it’s hard not to be excited about this flashy new product. It launches with a generous welcome bonus, an extensive list of useful benefits for AA flyers, and a rewarding assortment of earning categories.

Now without further ado, here's your first introduction to the AAdvantage® Globe™ card.

All About the New Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard®

One of the most obvious gaps in American Airlines' Citi-issued credit card lineup has been a product that sits between its low-to-no-annual-fee cards and its top-tier $595 card. The AAdvantage® Globe™ card now fills that role.

The new card offers a well-rounded set of benefits in exchange for a $350 annual fee and is best suited for frequent and semi-frequent American Airlines flyers, as well as those pursuing AAdvantage elite status.

And it’s now officially open for applications.

The debut of a new AA card may seem like it came out of left field, but it’s not actually all that surprising.

In late 2024, American Airlines expanded its partnership with Citi, announcing that the bank would become the exclusive issuer of its co-brand credit cards. And as a result, American began winding down its partnership with Barclays. We now know that existing Barclays cards will be converted to equivalent Citi products beginning in the first quarter of 2026.

And those impending conversions were likely the catalyst for the launch of the AAdvantage® Globe™ card, since Citi didn’t have a direct equivalent to the AAdvantage® Aviator® Silver Mastercard® until now. That card has long served as AA’s de facto mid-tier card, but has been something of an enigma in the Barclays portfolio because it was only available through targeted upgrade offers.

That said, the AAdvantage Globe™ card is quite different from the Aviator Silver. Here’s a closer look at what the new card brings to the table, starting with the welcome offer.

Welcome offer

For those looking to stock up on American Airlines miles, the AAdvantage® Globe™ card will launch with the following welcome offer: For a limited time, earn 90,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after $5,000 in purchases within the first 4 months of account opening.

To put this welcome bonus in perspective, AwardWallet users redeem AAdvantage miles for an average of 2.56¢ each. At that rate, the 90,000-mile bonus is worth around $2,300 toward award travel booked through American Airlines.

There are several fantastic ways to redeem AAdvantage miles, and you may find it easy to get even more value than this from your welcome bonus.

Benefits

Outside of the welcome bonus, the most exciting aspect of the AAdvantage® Globe™ card is its list of benefits. Travel and purchase protections

The AAdvantage® Globe™ comes with a variety of travel and shopping protection benefits, including enhanced trip cancellation and interruption coverage, lost or damaged luggage protection, MasterRental coverage for car rentals, trip delay insurance, extended warranty protection, and purchase assurance plus.

Many of these benefits are tied to the card’s Mastercard World Legend designation, which sits one tier above Mastercard World Elite. This designation also unlocks lifestyle perks such as priority reservations at top international restaurants, premium ticketing for music, theater, and sporting events, and more.

Earning rates

Compared to other American Airlines credit cards, the AAdvantage® Globe™ offers the most bonus categories of any card in the lineup. It even introduces a new bonus category you won’t find on other American Airlines cards.

The AAdvantage® Globe™ earns miles at the following rates:

  • 6X AAdvantage miles on eligible AAdvantage Hotels bookings.
  • 3X AAdvantage miles on eligible American Airlines purchases.
  • 2X AAdvantage miles at restaurants, including takeout and delivery.
  • 2X AAdvantage miles on eligible Rides and RailsTM purchases, including taxis, rideshares, and public transit.
  • 1X AAdvantage mile on all other purchases.

And like other American Airlines credit cards, the AAdvantage® Globe™ card will earn 1 Loyalty Point toward AAdvantage status for every eligible AAdvantage mile earned from qualifying purchases.

Application restrictions

If you’re considering applying for the AAdvantage® Globe™ card, either at launch or later on, it’s worth familiarizing yourself with its application restrictions. For all intents and purposes, this is a new product, and the language on the card’s application page reflects that. It reads:

“American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have received AAdvantage® bonus miles for a new AAdvantage® Globe™ account in the past 48 months or if you converted another Citi credit card account on which you earned a new account bonus in the last 48 months into a AAdvantage® Globe™ account.”

Are you eligible for the bonus if you currently hold the Aviator Silver?

Based on the application rules and restrictions, if you currently hold American Airlines’ former mid-tier card — the Barclays-issued AAdvantage® Aviator® Silver Mastercard® — you should still be eligible to earn the welcome bonus on the AAdvantage® Globe™ card.

However, it’s not yet confirmed whether Aviator Silver accounts will be converted to AAdvantage® Globe™ cards, although that seems like a reasonable outcome. This matters because Citi generally doesn’t allow cardholders to hold two of the same products at once.

So, if you currently have the Aviator Silver and plan to apply for the new AAdvantage® Globe™ for the sake of earning its welcome bonus, you may want to consider closing or trying to downgrade your Barclays account before any potential conversion takes place in the first quarter of 2026.

We’ve reached out to Citi for additional clarification and will update this section once more details are available.

Bottom Line

Citi and American Airlines have teamed up to launch the AAdvantage® Globe™ card, and at first glance, there’s plenty to be excited about — especially if you’re an American Airlines flyer who values earning both AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points.

The new card packs a lot of value for its $350 annual fee through a collection of lucrative first-year and ongoing benefits. For many American Airlines loyalists, it has the potential to stay near the top of the wallet — if not right at the top.
