As you've likely gathered, travel to and through the Middle East looks very different now than it did just a few months ago. As the conflict continues, airlines have been forced to cancel thousands of flights for safety reasons. And with those cancellations comes a big drop in new bookings.

Amid all this, Etihad is giving travelers a reason to come back when they're ready and able to fly again. The airline is reducing the requirements for multiple tiers of Etihad Guest elite status by 25%, which will make it a good bit easier to unlock travel perks in the year ahead.

Here's what to know about Etihad's new (and temporary) elite status thresholds, plus a quick look at the benefits to help you decide if pursuing status makes sense.

Etihad Reduces Elite Qualification Thresholds by 25%

Understandably, many Etihad Guest members may not have been able to travel this year. In response, Etihad emailed members to announce a temporary reduction in elite status qualification thresholds, effective from March 18, 2026, through March 31, 2027.

With this reduction, you'll need to earn 25% fewer tier miles to qualify for Silver, Gold, or Platinum status. Note that Emerald status isn’t included, as it’s based on qualifying spend (and receiving an invitation) rather than tier miles.

To earn Etihad Guest status, you’ll need to accumulate a set number of tier miles overall, with a portion of those coming by flying Etihad or its partner airlines.

Here are the reduced qualification thresholds now in effect for members earning status for the first time:

TierTotal Tier Miles RequiredTier Miles Required from Flying
Silver15,000 (Down from 20,000)7,500 (Down from 10,000)
Gold30,000 (Down from 40,000)15,000 (Down from 20,000)
Platinum75,000 (Down from 100,000)30,000 (Down from 40,000)

And here are the reduced requirements to retain Etihad status if you already have it:

TierTotal Tier Miles RequiredTier Miles Required from Flying
Silver18,750 (Down from 25,000)7,500 (Down from 10,000)
Gold37,500 (Down from 50,000)15,000 (Down from 20,000)
Platinum93,750 (Down from 125,000)30,000 (Down from 40,000)

Etihad isn’t changing its standard 12-month rolling qualification period, so to reach the next tier of elite status, you’ll need to meet the new, temporarily reduced requirements before your personal qualification period ends.

Etihad also offers a higher-tier status, Emerald, with top-tier perks. However, it’s excluded from the reduced qualification thresholds, as it’s only attainable by spending $150,000 (USD) on Etihad flights and receiving an invitation.

And one last thing: If you’re planning to spend heavily on flights, please make sure you’re using a credit card where airfare is a bonus category.
