Later this month, if you are traveling domestically on an American Airlines aircraft equipped with seatback entertainment systems or Wi-Fi, you will be able to enjoy complimentary in-flight entertainment. Among the entertainment options that will be offered are premium movies, TV shows, music, and games.

The Details on Complimentary Entertainment

According to American, their “...customers will have unrestricted access to the best and largest content library among the U.S. carriers from their own device or seatback entertainment systems.” TV shows available will include popular HBO shows such as Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley. Among the popular movies expected to be available later this month are Captain America: Civil War and The Boss.

Per American, nearly 300 of their aircraft, which represent approximately one-third of their fleet, are equipped with seatback entertainment systems, while all of their domestic mainline aircraft and two-class regional jets offer in-flight Wi-Fi. By downloading the American Airlines mobile app customers will be able to access the new free in-flight entertainment options.

Since the majority of American's fleet is not actually equipped with seatback entertainment systems, you will still have to bring your own mobile device to enjoy the new entertainment options on most domestic flights.

Also, keep in mind that Wi-Fi is only available while flying over or close to the contiguous U.S. If you are traveling to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands, the new entertainment options will only be available on a limited basis unless your aircraft is equipped with seatback entertainment systems.

Earlier this year, Delta began offering free in-flight entertainment — it is nice to see American follow Delta's lead on something positive for a change.

Bottom Line

As long as you have your own mobile device, you will be able to enjoy free in-flight entertainment on all American domestic flights while flying over or close to the contiguous U.S. If you are lucky enough to be flying on an American aircraft equipped with seatback entertainment systems, there will be no routing limitations to enjoy the new entertainment options on domestic flights.
