American Express Blue Cash Everyday Earning Rates
The Blue Cash Everyday offers solid earning rates. They are as follows:
- 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%)
- 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations (on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%)

Exclusions
American Express’ definition of U.S. supermarkets excludes wholesale clubs such as Costco and Sam’s Club, superstores like Target and Walmart, specialty food stores, and others. For the gas category, warehouse clubs, superstores, and supermarkets that sell gas don’t count. Here is a list of examples of qualifying stations.
Paying for services online doesn’t count toward the online retail category, and neither will travel bookings. According to American Express, “services” means purchases of physical goods that will be picked up or delivered to you. It also does not include purchases made in person with a mobile wallet.
Redeeming Rewards From the American Express Blue Cash Everyday
Cashback earned from the Blue Cash Everyday is denominated as Reward Dollars. You can redeem your rewards as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout.
And the earnings are pretty straightforward; one Reward Dollar earned on this card is worth $1 in bringing down the balance on your credit card or towards Amazon purchases, with no minimum amount required for redemption.
Your Reward Dollars never expire as long as your account is open.

Application Restrictions
The Blue Cash Everyday is issued by American Express, which has several application rules you should understand before applying for any Amex card. First, Amex has a “once-per-lifetime” rule for card welcome offers. You'll see the following terms on the application page:
“You may not be eligible to receive the welcome offer, intro APRs, and intro plan fees if you have or have had this Card, the Cash Magnet® Card, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card, the Morgan Stanley Blue Cash Preferred® American Express Card or previous versions of these Cards. You also may not be eligible to receive the welcome offer, intro APRs, and intro plan fees based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors.”
Therefore, if you have or previously held one of these cards, you're likely ineligible for this card's welcome bonus and introductory APR offers.
Thankfully, during the application process, you will get a pop-up message informing you if you're ineligible for the welcome offer. If you get this pop-up message, you can either proceed with the application or discard your application. Luckily, no ding will appear on your credit report if you decide to stop the application at this point.
American Express allows you to hold up to five personal or business credit cards simultaneously. Also, you can't get approved for more than two American Express cards in 90 days.

Cards That Compete With the American Express Blue Cash Everyday
For the sake of comparison, or if you feel the American Express Blue Cash Everyday isn't right for you, then consider these alternatives as you evaluate your overall credit card strategy:
- If you want higher earning rates for a modest annual fee, consider the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express. It has no annual fee for the first year, then a $95 annual fee (Rates & Fees). It earns 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions, plus 6% at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%), 3% at U.S. gas stations, and 3% on transit, including taxis/rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses and more. Cash Back is received as Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout. See our full Blue Cash Preferred Card review for more information.
- If you want 3x transferable points on gas and groceries, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card might be for you. It charges a $95 annual fee but has unlimited 3x earnings in multiple categories. Instead of cashback, you can use these points with 21 airline and hotel partners, as well as redeem them as a statement credit or in Citi's travel portal. Our Citi Strata Premier review has additional details.
- If you want a simple approach to cash back with no annual fee, look into the Citi Double Cash® Card. You'll earn 2% cash back on all purchases, awarded as 1% when you buy plus 1% as you pay. This cashback technically comes in the form of points that you can use with a few transfer partners or combine with rewards from other Citi credit cards, if you have any, to gain additional redemption options. Further details are found in our Citi Double Cash Card review.
