Got a Bank of America credit card? Listen up. Bank of America announced a major change to how many pay their Bank of America credit card bills online. Starting August 23, 2025, Bank of America is sunsetting its Bill Pay system for personal credit card holders, and also automatically cancelling any automatic bill payments used through the system after that date.
Here's everything you need to know about the changes — and how to avoid missed payments.
Bank of America Is Overhauling Bill Pay and Cancelling Existing Auto-Payments
Many responsible credit card holders schedule an autopay of their credit card bill each month. It's the best way to ensure you're not revolving a credit card balance each month. This is because missed payments will ultimately negate any rewards you may earn from credit card spending.
However, Bank of America cardholders need to switch to the bank's new “Pay & Transfer” system starting August 23rd, 2025. That's when the bank is upgrading its internal systems.
But here's the part about these changes that you'll need to pay close attention to: All existing auto-payments will be cancelled starting on August 23.
Confusingly, automatic payments outside of Bank of America using Bill Pay will continue unabated, such as payments for your gym membership or utility bill. This change is only for Bill Pay payments made to pay off your personal Bank of America credit card balance.

If you hold a popular Bank of America credit card — such as the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card — check your email for a message from the bank, beginning with “Starting August 23, we’re changing the way you make payments to your personal credit card.“ Internally, this new tool is aimed at simplifying the bill payment process and consolidating tools used by customers of the bank to manage their financial lives.
Be sure to sign up for auto-alerts at BankofAmerica.com/alerts as well, as alerts under the Bill Pay system will be cancelled beginning August 23rd, too.
Our Take
It's insane that a bank will make a change to a system that would cancel the old auto-payments automatically. Clearly, there will be Bank of America credit card members who will miss a payment and accrue interest because of the switch to “Pay & Transfer.” Don't let this be you.
While the bank may end up enacting a grace period for affected members, it still creates a negative experience for customers. As a Bank of America cardholder myself, I've experienced a myriad of issues paying bills through my online account (I've even had to…wait for it…make a phone call and pay over the phone!).
However, the backend improvements performed by Bank of America with this change will likely be a net positive for customers in the future. Unfortunately, it creates an inconvenience for cardmembers in the short term to build towards the future. Ensure you've switched over to the new system before August 23, 2025, and you'll have no issues with auto-payments with Bank of America.
