One of the very first airline loyalty programs I joined was Delta SkyMiles. Although I may not use it as often these days — and I have mixed feelings about some aspects of the program — Delta SkyMiles can still offer value to the right traveler.
Even if you fly Delta Air Lines infrequently, it can be well worth joining SkyMiles to be rewarded for when you do fly Delta. The program is entirely free to join. Plus, Delta offers many ways to earn SkyMiles that don't include flying, including one of the best suites of co-branded credit cards on the market.
In this guide, we'll cover everything about the program, including the top methods for earning and redeeming SkyMiles and achieving Delta Medallion status.
Overview of Delta SkyMiles
Delta Air Lines is the oldest U.S. airline still in operation. It was founded as a crop-dusting company in 1925 but began passenger operations four years later and hasn't looked back since.
Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Delta operates its largest hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — which continues to be the world's busiest passenger airport. Besides its central Georgia hub, Delta has hubs in:
- New York City (both LaGuardia and JFK)
- Boston
- Detroit
- Minneapolis/St. Paul
- Salt Lake City
- Los Angeles
- Seattle/Tacoma
In short, the carrier offers extensive network coverage across the United States.

Snapshot of Delta's network
Delta Air Lines has one of the world's largest route networks, serving more than 310 destinations with over 5,500 daily departures. The airline carries more than 200 million passengers each year and operates a fleet of more than 1,000 mainline aircraft, plus hundreds more through its Delta Connection regional partners.
Delta's reach extends well beyond the United States. The airline flies to every inhabited continent and, as a founding member of the SkyTeam airline alliance, offers access to an even broader global network through 18 member airlines. With strong partners across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, SkyMiles members can redeem miles for travel to destinations around the world.
Even if you rarely fly Delta, SkyMiles can still be worth joining. Since Delta miles don't expire, you can take your time building a balance before redeeming them. However, like any airline loyalty program, SkyMiles has its strengths and weaknesses, which we'll cover throughout this guide.
First, here's how to join and start earning miles.
How to join the Delta SkyMiles program
The easiest way to join Delta SkyMiles is to head to delta.com and click “Join SkyMiles” near the top right of the page. After that, Delta will ask for some basic personal information, including your name, date of birth, gender, address, phone number, and email address, before creating your account credentials.
Once enrolled, Delta will send you a welcome email with your SkyMiles number.

You can also enroll your kids in Delta SkyMiles online. The only difference will be a checkbox confirming that you are the parent or guardian of the child under the age of thirteen.
Once you've joined, we recommend adding your Delta account number in AwardWallet. Unlike most reward programs, Delta doesn't allow us to check your balance automatically on the website. Instead, link the email address associated with your Delta SkyMiles account to your AwardWallet account, or change your Delta account email to your assigned username@awardwallet.com address. AwardWallet will automatically update your account and forward any emails to your preferred address.

How To Earn Delta SkyMiles
Flying Delta is the most obvious way to earn SkyMiles — the old “butt-in-seat” method. But, you have plenty of other options. These include a suite of Delta co-branded credit cards, flying Delta partner airlines, transferring rewards points to Delta SkyMiles from other programs, and using SkyMiles shopping, dining, and travel portals.
You also can buy Delta miles, although rates are typically too high to justify this option.
Delta SkyMiles co-branded American Express cards
Delta has one of the strongest co-branded credit card lineups, with seven cards (all from American Express) to choose from. Each card includes a welcome bonus, lets you earn SkyMiles on everyday spending, and comes with its own mix of bonus categories and travel perks.
Benefits vary by card but can include a free checked bag, priority boarding, discounts on in-flight purchases, and TakeOff 15, which provides a 15% discount on eligible Delta-operated award flights booked with miles.
The higher-tier cards also provide annual companion fare certificates and can even help you earn Delta Medallion status.
Here are the four Delta SkyMiles personal American Express cards:

Keep in mind that American Express has a once-per-lifetime rule for welcome offers on its credit cards. More recently, Amex added card “family” restrictions to Delta cards that can limit you from earning welcome bonuses, even on cards that you've never had.
Transfer flexible rewards points to Delta SkyMiles
Delta is an American Express Membership Rewards transfer partner, with points transferring at a 1:1 ratio in increments of 1,000 points. Transfers are generally instant. Keep in mind that Amex charges an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point transferred to Delta, up to a maximum of $99.
There are many Membership Rewards-earning cards out there. At the top of the list is the American Express Platinum Card®, which comes with several Delta-specific perks.
Some other great options include the American Express® Gold Card and The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express.

Fly Delta Air Lines
Delta awards SkyMiles based on the amount you spend rather than the distance you fly. Earnings are based on the base fare, which excludes taxes and fees. Delta also displays your estimated mileage earnings during the booking process. Here are the earning rates:
- General SkyMiles Members: 5X miles for every $1
- Silver Medallion Members: 7X miles for every $1
- Gold Medallion Members: 8X miles for every $1
- Platinum Medallion Members: 9X miles for every $1
- Diamond Medallion Members: 11X miles for every $1
To earn Delta Medallion elite status, you have to earn a sufficient amount of Medallion Qualifying Dollars. We'll cover this in detail later.
Earnings example
As an example, I priced out a round-trip flight from San Francisco, California (SFO) to Barcelona, Spain (BCN) via Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) for $1,018.03. Although the total price is over $1,000, only the $886 base fare counts toward SkyMiles earnings.
A general SkyMiles member would earn 4,430 miles, while a Platinum Medallion member would earn 7,974 miles.

Fly Delta's SkyTeam partners and non-alliance partner airlines
You also can earn SkyMiles from flying Delta's partner airlines. Unlike when flying Delta, you earn miles based on the distance flown and fare class. The earning rates vary, so make sure to consult the chart for the specific partner you're flying.
One important distinction is how your ticket is issued. If your partner flight is ticketed through Delta (ticket number starts with 006), you'll earn miles based on Delta's accrual rates, including Medallion status bonuses. If the flight is ticketed with another airline, you'll earn according to Delta's chart for that airline. Keep this in mind and compare the number of SkyMiles you'd receive if the booking cost between the options is roughly the same.
Delta groups its closest airline partners into its Core Global Airline Partners, which offer the most favorable earning rates:
- Aeromexico
- Air France
- China Eastern
- KLM
- Korean Air
- LATAM
- Virgin Atlantic
Delta also partners with several other airlines worldwide. These are Delta's Global Airline Partners:
- Air Baltic
- Aerolineas Argentinas
- Air Europa
- Cape Air
- China Airlines
- EL AL Israel Airlines
- Garuda Indonesia
- Kenya Airways
- Middle Eastern Airlines (MEA)
- SAS
- Saudia
- TAROM
- Vietnam Airlines
- WestJet
- Xiamen Air
Partner earning example
Let's look at earning with Air France, one of Delta's key European partners. Suppose I book a round-trip ticket between San Francisco (SFO) and Mumbai (BOM) via Paris (CDG) in fare code W (Premium Economy) for $2,612. The round-trip flight distance is approximately 19,868 miles. Air France flights in fare code W earn 150% of flown miles as SkyMiles, so I'd earn ~29,802 base SkyMiles.
This example highlights when it can be advantageous to book flights with partners when prices are comparable, as a Delta itinerary of the same cost would earn around half the number of miles.
The partner earning charts also note whether the Medallion earning bonus applies. This is a “yes” for Air France (and all other Core Global Partners). A Platinum Medallion would, therefore, earn ~53,644 total SkyMiles in the example above (an 80% bonus).
Earn miles on everyday and travel purchases
You can earn Delta SkyMiles from a variety of SkyMiles partners. In several cases, you can earn miles by simply linking your account and making a qualifying purchase. This includes merchants like Starbucks and Uber.
You also can earn miles by booking a Delta Vacations package. The number of miles varies, and Delta regularly offers bonus miles depending on what you book.
Delta's partnership with Hertz is solid and includes benefits for Delta Medallion elites. General SkyMiles members earn 4 miles per $1 spent. But you can earn more as an elite:
- Delta Silver members: 5X miles per $1 spent with Hertz, plus Five Star status with Hertz
- Delta Gold members: 6X miles per $1 spent with Hertz, plus Five Star status with Hertz
- Delta Platinum members: 7X miles per $1 spent with Hertz, plus President's Circle status with Hertz
- Delta Diamond members: 8X miles per $1 spent with Hertz, plus President's Circle status with Hertz

Transfer hotel points to Delta SkyMiles
While we don't generally recommend it, you can convert hotel points to Delta SkyMiles. Delta partners with several hotel loyalty programs, including Accor Live Limitless, Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and IHG One Rewards. The transfer ratios vary, depending on the chain. Few transfers offer much value. Even transferring Marriott points 3:1 isn't a great deal.
Still, should you need a few SkyMiles to top up your account, transferring hotel points is an option.
Delta SkyMiles Shopping and Dining platforms
Like several other airlines, Delta has an online shopping portal that lets you earn miles when shopping with participating retailers. Earnings vary by retailer and not all products are eligible for earning SkyMiles, so read the terms and conditions carefully.

You can also earn miles through SkyMiles Dining by linking an eligible credit or debit card and using it at participating restaurants. Earning rates depend on your membership level, with higher rates available to members who opt in to emails and reach VIP status.
Buy and gift Delta SkyMiles
You can also buy Delta miles for 3.5 cents apiece. That's an exorbitant price and generally isn't worth it. We'd only recommend buying miles as a last resort if you need a small number to book a valuable award and don't have another way to earn them quickly. Members can purchase up to 60,000 SkyMiles per calendar year.
Gifting SkyMiles costs the same 3.5 cents per mile, plus taxes. Again, we don't recommend it unless you have no better option. You can gift up to 60,000 SkyMiles per calendar year.
Can you transfer SkyMiles to other members?
If gifting miles is too expensive, Delta lets you transfer SkyMiles to other members. The cost is 1 cent per mile — much less than the cost of gifting. However, this fee wipes out much of the value of your miles. Plus, no matter how few miles you transfer, Delta imposes a processing fee of $30. If the other member has other ways of obtaining miles for an award, these will likely be a better value option.
Instead, if you have enough miles, you're generally better off using your SkyMiles to book an award directly in the other person's name. You'll accomplish essentially the same thing without paying to transfer the miles.
All the Ways To Redeem Delta SkyMiles
Delta SkyMiles aren't the most valuable airline currency (see here for point and mile value data points from AwardWallet users). Both Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and United Airlines MileagePlus have a higher average per-mile value. Even Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards, with its revenue-based earning and redemption model, gets you more on average than redeeming Delta SkyMiles.
Still, SkyMiles aren't worthless. Let's look at what they're worth, how to redeem them for flights, and some of the best ways to use them.

What are Delta SkyMiles worth?
Because Delta uses dynamic pricing, award prices often rise and fall along with cash fares so you won't find any fixed pricing. Delta also doesn't publish an award chart, so it's difficult to know how many miles you'll need for a flight. However, we've compiled an unofficial Delta SkyMiles award chart to provide a useful reference.
Based on actual bookings made by AwardWallet members, the average value of each Delta SkyMile is 1.35¢. This includes both short-haul economy awards (averaging 1.22¢ per SkyMile) and long-haul premium cabin awards (averaging 2.37¢ per SkyMile).
Interestingly, even with significant devaluations to premium cabin award pricing over the years, AwardWallet members still get the highest average value from long-haul business- and first-class redemptions.
Redeem SkyMiles for Delta or partner airline flights
The best way to use Delta SkyMiles is to redeem them for flights on Delta Air Lines and its partners. Again, there is no chart to reference for pricing with Delta's dynamic pricing model.
For Delta-operated flights, you can redeem SkyMiles across its cabin classes, including:
- Delta Main Basic (basic economy)
- Delta Main
- Delta Comfort
- Delta First
- Delta Premium Select
- Delta One
Delta Main Basic uses the same product as Delta Main but comes with additional fare restrictions. Not all cabin and fare classes are offered to every destination.
Delta also partners with over 20 airlines, giving SkyMiles members plenty of options for redeeming miles beyond Delta-operated flights. Most partner awards can be booked online at delta.com, although you'll need to contact Delta Reservations to book awards on Air Europa, Air Tahiti Nui, and Kenya Airways.
How to search for and book Delta SkyMiles award flights
Let's walk through how to search for and book an award flight using SkyMiles. I've had it in my mind to return to Ireland, so Portland (PDX) to Dublin (DUB) it is.
To search for a Delta SkyMiles award flight, you can use either the Delta website or the mobile app. I prefer the website because you can easily view additional dates when you have flexible plans.
Below, I input my origin, destination, and travel dates. Then I clicked the “Shop with Miles” checkbox and indicated that I'm looking for Delta Main fares. I've also enabled the “My dates are flexible” box. When you are satisfied with your search criteria, hit the “Find Flights” button.

If you search with flexible dates, Delta will show the lowest available prices across a range of dates. Otherwise, you'll go directly to the flight options for the dates you selected.

For my Portland-to-Dublin search, Delta returned a mix of Delta-operated and partner flights. The prices weren't particularly appealing, so let's see whether Delta's flexible date tools can help us find something cheaper.
Use Delta's flexible date view and price calendar
If your travel dates are flexible, Delta offers a couple of tools that can help you find cheaper awards. This “Flexible Dates” view is great because it lets you easily spot the best price.

You can also use Delta's “Price Calendar” to compare prices across a wider range of dates. For one-way awards, the calendar can display up to five weeks at once, which is particularly useful when you have extra flexibility to work with.
For my Portland-to-Dublin search, my original dates were already among the cheapest nearby. But expanding the search showed some lower-priced options if I was willing to adjust my travel dates.

Booking a Delta SkyMiles award
Once you settle on the flights you want, the rest of the booking process is pretty simple. For this example, I decided to stick with my original dates. The savings I found using the five-week calendar were marginal, and I preferred the flight times.
From there, you'll enter your passenger information, select seats (when available), and pay the applicable taxes and fees.

I will mention that this example provides rather poor value. At the time of writing, a cash fare for a very similar Delta Main itinerary is $846. Subtracting the award taxes and fees from the ticket price, I'd get almost exactly 1 cent per SkyMile.
SkyMiles award routing rules
Delta doesn't have comprehensive published routing rules or restrictions. However, you'll notice that some routes are not available (for example, flying to East Asia via Europe). All Delta says regarding routing rules and prices is this:
Awards are subject to capacity controls. Awards may require higher prices depending on routing rules and restrictions. Exceptions to these rules may require additional mileage or taxes and fees. Travel to all destinations within region may not be available at lowest price.
Delta's booking, change, cancellation, and other fees
Delta has gone from one of the worst airlines for change and cancellation fees to one of the best. These days, Delta doesn't charge award change or cancellation fees for tickets originating in the United States and Canada, with the exception of Delta Main Basic.
Delta used to charge a phone booking fee as well, but that's also gone.
Finally, Delta selectively passes along fuel and carrier surcharges. Some awards require a significant amount of cash in addition to your SkyMiles, but not all. You'll find that awards departing Europe tend to have higher carrier surcharges. Most awards departing the U.S. do not levy surcharges, even if the operating carrier normally does (for example, Air France, KLM).
Takeaway: Booking with SkyMiles is worry-free, as long as you avoid Delta Main Basic.

Best Delta SkyMiles Sweet Spots
Here's the difficult truth: Delta SkyMiles is not a program where you'll frequently find amazing value. Dynamic pricing can make awards expensive, but you can still find occasional award sales and routes that offer decent value.
The typical Delta flyer should target domestic Delta Main awards during award sales, as some sales offer above-average value. However, these tend to coincide with revenue fare sales, so still check the overall cents per mile that you're getting.
Some of the best SkyMiles sweet spots I've found are partner awards outside the U.S., particularly for travel within Asia or between regions like Asia, Europe, and Australia.

What Is Delta Medallion Elite Status and How Do You Earn It?
Delta rewards loyal flyers through its Medallion program. If you fly enough with Delta to earn any of the four tiers, you'll enjoy various benefits on Delta flights. While the perks can be great, it takes a lot to earn Delta Medallion status. You can find some shortcuts, though.

Delta Medallion status qualification requirements
The only metric that matters for earning Delta Medallion status is Medallion Qualification Dollars. You no longer need to track the number of flights, distance, or anything else.
For the qualification year, you'll need:
- Silver Medallion: $5,000 MQDs
- Gold Medallion: $10,000 MQDs
- Platinum Medallion: $15,000 MQDs
- Diamond Medallion: $28,000 MQDs

All fares earn MQDs with the exception of Delta Main Basic.

Earn Delta elite status with credit cards
Delta's Platinum- and Reserve-level cards can provide a major shortcut to Medallion status. Each eligible card provides a $2,500 MQD Headstart annually, plus the opportunity to earn additional MQDs through card spending. Since there are four eligible cards — two personal and two business — holding all four would give you $10,000 MQDs each year before spending a dime (although you'll pay a substantial amount in annual fees to do so).
Here's how you can use Delta credit cards to reach each Medallion tier:
| Earn Medallion Status Using Delta SkyMiles Credit Cards | Credit Cards and Requirement |
|---|---|
| Earn Silver Medallion Status ($5,000 MDs) | One-Card Strategy • $2,500 Headstart MQDs , plus either $25K annual spend on Delta Reserve or $50K annual spend on the Delta Platinum Amex Two-Card Strategy • $5,000 Headstart MQDs - no card spending required if you have 2 Platinum-level or Reserve-level cards (but must be different cards, not 2 of the same) |
| Earn Gold Medallion Status ($10,000 MQDs) | One-Card Strategy • $2,500 Headstart MQDs plus $75K annual spend on Delta Reserve Multi-Card Strategy • $2,500 Headstart MQDs per card (four cards earns it outright, with $2,000 in annual fees) • $5,000 Headstart MQDs from a reasonable two-card strategy, plus $50K annual spend on Delta Reserve |
| Earn Platinum Medallion Status ($15,000 MQDs) | Multi-Card Strategy • $5,000 Headstart MQDs plus $100K annual spend on Delta Reserve (for a two-card strategy) • $10,000 Headstart MQDs plus $50K annual spend on Delta Reserve (four-card strategy) |
| Earn Diamond Medallion Status ($28,000 MQDs) | Four-Card Strategy • $10,000 Headstart MQDs plus $180K annual spend on the Delta Reserve |
Benefits of Delta Medallion status
For those who earn Delta Medallion status, expect to be rewarded with various perks depending on which level you attain. The benefits include free checked bags, complimentary upgrades, bonus SkyMiles, and more.
If you hit either Platinum or Diamond Medallion, you'll unlock the Choice Benefits. These let you choose from perks such as upgrade certificates, bonus SkyMiles, statement credits, and travel vouchers. Some options are much more valuable than others, so check out our complete guide to Delta Choice Benefits before making your selection.
There's plenty more to know about earning and using Delta elite status. Check out our complete guide to Delta Medallion elite status for all the details.

Delta Air Lines Million Miler status
Delta offers a lifetime status program called Million Miler. It comprises several tiers, with the first milestone at 1 million miles flown. Here's what Delta grants you at each million:
- 1 million miles: Gold Medallion
- 2 million miles: Platinum Medallion
- 3, 4 million miles: Diamond Medallion
- 5-plus million miles: Annual invitation to Delta 360°
You also receive a gift at each million miles, including intermediate levels between lifetime status tiers.
Delta SkyMiles Million Miler Status isn't quite as good as other programs. However, it is easier to achieve, as partner earnings are counted towards the total.
Earnings from co-branded Delta American Express cards no longer count toward the total. You can find your Million Miler status within your profile.
Bottom Line
Although the program has some downsides, Delta SkyMiles is still great for many. In all honesty, I still regularly earn SkyMiles and enjoy flying with the carrier. SkyMiles are easy to accumulate; you just need a lot of them for many awards. It's certainly a plus that Delta SkyMiles never expire. Delta has a strong elite program as well, rewarding its most loyal members with an excellent array of perks.
One of my biggest wins with SkyMiles was using 85,000 SkyMiles per person to fly China Airlines business class with my son to Taipei. It remains one of my favorite business-class experiences. Now this ticket would cost multiple times this amount, sadly. Additionally, I learned the ropes of how to get an excellent return from selectively crediting partner flights to SkyMiles. In fact, a $375 round-trip ticket to London once earned me over 10,000 SkyMiles, due to partner-earning idiosyncrasies!
