American Express sends out targeted bonuses relatively frequently offering cardholders bonus points for adding an authorized user and spending a specified dollar amount. We've seen these offers on a large array of their cards–from Hilton and Delta to its own Membership Rewards earning cards.
Generally, the offer is capped at 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points. However, Amex has recently increased that offer to 20,000 bonus points. AwardWallet users receive an average value of 2.4 cents per point with Amex Membership Rewards. So, this offer is worth around $480!
Which Authorized User Card Type Should You Get
When adding an authorized user to your Amex Platinum, Amex allows you to select from two card types.
The Platinum authorized user option comes with a hefty fee of $175 a year (in addition to the primary card's annual fee). But, the good news is that you can add up to 3 authorized users for just one $175 additional fee. Consider this option if your authorized user will value the Amex Platinum benefits. That's because this option allows your authorized user to access most of the perks of the Amex Platinum.
The second option is the Gold version card. Note that this is different than the American Express® Gold Card. The main benefit of this card is that there is no fee. And the Gold card is eligible for the authorized user offer. So, this is an easy way to get the bonus without having to pay a higher annual fee!
Who Can Be an Amex Platinum Authorized User
Authorized users for American Express only need to be 13 years old. If you are responsible with your Amex credit cards, this can be a great way to earn your bonus while simultaneously helping to build your child's credit score. Personally, I added my 14-year-old as one of my authorized users on the basic Gold option just for this deal.
If your potential authorized user currently has or has held the Platinum card, no worries. They are still eligible to be an authorized user and it won't impact their eligibility to get their own primary account in the future.
