Emirates is offering Skywards members a new promotion to buy miles with up to a 25% bonus through March 22, 2025. Eligible members can snag miles for as little as 2.4¢ each.

This promotion may be targeted, so the bonus you see in your account may vary. And while not as generous as previous offers we've seen from the Middle Eastern carrier, it could be useful if you need miles for a specific redemption.

Here’s how to make the most of this promotion — and when buying Emirates Skywards miles might still make sense, even after January 2024’s partner award devaluation.

Emirates Buy Miles Promotion Key Terms

  • Promotion is valid through March 22, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Gulf Standard Time (2:59 p.m. EST in the U.S.)
  • Emirates Skywards members can purchase a maximum of 100,000 miles (before the bonus) through this promotion.
  • You must purchase a minimum of 2,000 miles (no bonus at this level).
  • Purchase a minimum of 5,000 miles to unlock a 10% bonus.
  • Purchase at least 26,000 miles to get the maximum 25% bonus.
  • Purchased miles typically post instantly, although some purchases may take up to 48 hours.
  • Purchased miles do not count toward status upgrades.
  • Miles can only be bought by Skywards members who have at least one prior earning activity in their account.
  • Mile purchases are non-refundable.

Here are the tiers to this Emirates buy miles promotion:

  • 2,000–4,000 miles: No bonus (3¢ each)
  • 5,000–34,000 miles: 10% bonus (2.73¢ each)
  • 35,000–59,000 miles: 15% bonus (2.61¢ each)
  • 60,000–100,000 miles: 25% bonus (2.4¢ each)

If you buy a maximum of 100,000 Emirates Skywards miles with a 25% bonus through this promotion, you'll receive 125,000 miles (100,000 base + 25,000 bonus) for $3,000. That comes out to 2.4¢ per mile.

When Does It Make Sense To Buy Emirates Miles?

Buying miles is rarely a good idea unless you have a specific redemption in mind. Programs can devalue without notice, your travel plans may change, and holding onto miles speculatively can sometimes leave you with a currency you can’t use. However, there are scenarios where buying Emirates Skywards miles might make sense.

If you’re short of the miles needed for an award booking, purchasing miles can be an easy way to top up your account. This can be particularly useful for premium cabin bookings. But even with the occasional promotion, Emirates' mileage purchase rate is typically high, so comparing the cost with alternative options is a step you shouldn't skip.

Since Emirates partners with nearly 20 airlines and is a transfer partner of most flexible rewards programs, transferring points might be a more practical choice than buying them outright.

But like any rule, there's always an exception. Let’s explore some examples of when purchasing Emirates miles might make sense and how to get the most value out of them.

Newark to Athens in Emirates business class

One quirky thing about the Emirates Skywards program is that round-trip awards offer more favorable pricing (per segment) than one-way awards — sometimes. Newark to Athens is one such example. A round-trip award can cost as little as 108k miles plus about $250 in taxes and fees. But if you book this award as two one-ways, you'll pay 87k miles per direction.

Obviously, the round-trip ticket is a better deal here — and more so because you're flying in business class.

  • Mileage rate: 108,000 miles + $253 taxes round-trip
  • Typical cash price: $4,790 round-trip
  • Redemption rate: 4.2¢ per mile
  • Cost to purchase 108,750 Skywards miles (after a 25% bonus): $2,610
  • Cost to buy 108,000 Skywards miles at 2.4¢ each: $2,592

Miami to Bogota in Emirates first class

Emirates has a legendary first-class product. And it's got the price tag to match. On most routes, you'll pay well over 100,000 Skywards miles each way. But there's a way to sample the incredible product on a route from the U.S. to South America. Emirates operates a fifth-freedom flight from Miami to Bogota, and Emirates First Class can be booked with miles for just 60,000 miles each way.

  • Mileage rate: 60,000 miles + $106 taxes one-way
  • Typical cash price: $3,330 each way
  • Redemption rate: 5.4¢ per mile
  • Cost to buy 60,000 Skywards miles at 2.4¢ each: $1,440 each way

With this promotion, you can only purchase up to 125,000 Emirates Skywards miles — factoring in the 25% bonus. Thus, you have two options if you want to use miles to fly Emirates first class on long-haul routes:

  • Transfer credit card points to Emirates and buy the remaining points necessary to book. The downside of this is you'll need to redeem a lot of points — and still pay the hefty taxes and fees.
  • Book a business class ticket through Emirates (with cash or miles), then upgrade your booking to first class with miles. Depending on the type of business class fare you book, the cost to upgrade will vary, but there are no cash copays. As an example, here are the running rates to upgrade a business class ticket on the IAD to DXB route with Skywards miles:

Washington D.C.–Lisbon in TAP Portugal business class

Emirates has a unique distance-based award chart for each airline it partners with — and TAP Portugal is no exception. If you want to fly lie-flat from the U.S. East Coast to Portugal, you can do so for 77,500 Skywards miles.

It's worth noting that while Emirates makes it look like you can book partner awards online, this functionality does not work 100% of the time. You'll likely be better off finding partner award space elsewhere and then calling Emirates to book.

  • Mileage rate: 77,500 miles each way (155,000 miles round-trip)
  • Typical cash price: $5,395 round-trip
  • Redemption rate: 3.48¢ per mile
  • Cost to purchase 77,500 Skywards miles (after a 25% bonus): $1,860
  • Cost to buy 77,500 Skywards miles at 2.4¢ each: $1,860 one-way

Seattle–Tokyo in Japan Airlines (JAL) business class

Want to head to Japan instead? Emirates Skywards miles can help you fund a vacation to the Land of the Rising Sun, too. And if you want to start your journey in Seattle, you can fly to Tokyo for 92,500 Skywards miles in Japan Airlines business class.

Like with TAP Portugal, getting the Emirates partner award booking tool to work properly is relatively difficult. If you want to book this award, we'll suggest confirming award space elsewhere and then phoning Emirates to book. But while you're looking for space, be sure to confirm pricing with other programs; you may be able to book this award for less through programs like Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, for example.

  • Mileage rate: 92,500 miles each way (185,000 miles round-trip)
  • Typical cash price: $8,313 round-trip
  • Redemption rate: 4.49¢ per mile
  • Cost to purchase 92,500 Skywards miles (after a 25% bonus): $2,220
  • Cost to buy 92,500 Skywards miles at 2.4¢ each: $2,220 each way

Emirates Buy Miles History

We have compiled a list of former Emirates promotions for buying Skywards Miles. As you can see, it's been a while since Emirates came out with a new promotion (that wasn't flash sale). However, the cost-per-mile rate of 2.4¢ apiece is weak compared to what Emirates has offered in the past for these valuable Skywards miles.

But seeing as these promos come out once in a blue moon, now might be a good time to grab some if you were looking to grab a sweet redemption now or stock up for later:

Maximizing Your Purchase of Skywards Miles

Purchases of Emirates Skywards miles are processed by Points.com — so your purchase won't qualify for the travel category bonus offered by some travel rewards credit cards. With that in mind, consider using one of these cards for your purchase:

Emirates Skywards Points Pooling

Another interesting facet of Skywards is that you can pool your miles with up to eight people. Thus, you can share miles with others to “add up to it” if you're short on an award redemption.

You won't need to worry about accounts with small numbers of miles collecting dust — or worse, expiring needlessly. Even better, when you and a partner travel together on a cash fare, you can both earn miles for the same flight and pool them together. This could reduce the need to buy miles from Emirates.

Bottom Line

Buying Emirates Skywards miles at 2.4¢ apiece is not the best deal we've seen from the Dubai-based airline. We've seen 100% bonuses from Emirates before, which brought the price down to 1.5¢ per mile. However, we don't know when (or if) that kind of promotion will ever return. But if you need miles now, this deal runs until March 22, 2025.

If you have a redemption in mind, try to transfer points from a bank partner first. If you're still short on miles, this promotion could be worth considering in rare circumstances. Buying miles could be cheaper than buying a ticket with cash — especially in premium cabins. Just be sure to do the math beforehand.

Are you going to buy Emirates Skywards miles at 2.4¢ apiece?
