This Finnair buy Avios promotion has ended. However, you can still buy Finnair Avios here.

For the last little bit, Finnair has been offering Plus program members the chance to buy Avios with up to a 40% discount. If you maximize this deal, you can purchase Avios for as little as 1.3¢ apiece through March 30, 2026. That’s an excellent rate, so if you’ve been considering taking advantage of it but haven’t yet, now’s the time to act.

But is buying Avios through Finnair Plus actually worth the cost? Let’s show you how you can leverage this sale to score some incredible deals.

Buy Finnair Avios Promotion Details

This promotion offers up to a 40% discount on Avios purchases through the Finnair Plus program. While you may be targeted for a different offer, most of the AwardWallet team is seeing the 40% discount, so we’ll focus on that deal in this post.

Finnair lets you buy up to 200,000 Avios per calendar year. If you’re eligible for the 40% discount, that means you could purchase 200,000 Avios for $2,604, which comes out to about 1.3¢ per point.

Just note that you'll need to purchase a significant amount of Avios to get the optimal rate. Here’s how the tiers break down for members eligible for the 40% discount:

  • 1,000—4,000 Avios: No discount (2.8¢ USD)
  • 5,000 Avios: 25% discount (2.1¢ USD)
  • 6,000—10,000 Avios: 25% discount (1.82¢ USD)
  • 11,000—19,000 Avios: 25% discount (1.71¢ USD)
  • 20,000—49,000 Avios: 30% discount (1.6¢ USD)
  • 50,000—84,000 Avios: 35% discount (1.48¢ USD)
  • 85,000—99,000 Avios: 40% discount (1.37¢ USD)
  • 100,000—200,000 Avios: 40% discount (1.3¢ USD)

As you can see above, the best purchase rate starts when you purchase at least 100,000 Avios. After the 40% discount, you'll pay roughly 1.3¢ per Avios. You will be able to see the discount when you proceed to buy Avios in the Finnair Shop.

Note that you can select which currency you want to use to pay for Avios. But not all currencies offer the best rate. For example, buying 100,000 Avios using Euro costs 1260€ ($1,453 at current exchange rates). If you opt to buy in USD instead, you'd only pay 1129€ at current exchange rates.

Is It Worth Buying Finnair Avios?

Ultimately, whether or not it makes sense to buy Avios depends on what redemptions you'll make with them. To get an idea of what you can do with them, here is the Finnair redemption chart:

New Finnair award chart that went into effect on March 9, 2024.

When buying Finnair Avios at 1.3¢ each, you can expect to pay:

  • 20,000 Avios (costing you ~$260) + €33.60 (~$39) in fees one-way for business class anywhere within Europe

Finnair Plus partner airline limitations

It's worth noting that you can't combine more than one partner in an award booking. Thus, you could book an award for a Finnair flight connecting to a partner, but you can't book an award that has both Alaska and American Airlines flights.

Transferring Avios between programs

Similar to when Qatar Privilege Club joined the Avios program, Finnair travelers should be able to transfer Avios between Finnair Plus and British Airways Club at a 1:1 transfer ratio.

British Airways Avios already transfer to Iberia, Qatar, and Aer Lingus, and more, meaning you'll be able to move Avios between the following programs at a 1:1 transfer ratio:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • British Airways Club
  • Finnair Plus
  • Iberia Plus
  • Qatar Privilege Club
  • Logan Loyalty

Finnair Avios expiration policy

It's important to note that Finnair Avios expire after 18 months of inactivity. Be sure to keep this in mind if you don't plan to use your newly purchased Avios immediately.

Buy Finnair Plus Points & Avios History

We have compiled a list of former Finnair promotions for buying points and Avios. Keep in mind that Finnair used to have Finnair Plus points and only recently adopted Avios as its currency. So, while the Plus points used to cost much less than Avios, they are worth a lot more now that they can be transferred to Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Qatar.

As you can see, this current 40% discount is one of the best promotions we've seen from Finnair since it pivoted to Avios.

Maximize Your Purchase

Like many other loyalty programs, Finnair partners with Points.com to sell Avios. Thus, your purchase won't code as a travel or airfare purchase, so use one of these cards to maximize your earnings:

Alternatively, you could transfer points to other Avios-utilizing airlines, such as British Airways, and then make a separate transfer to Finnair. It requires multiple steps, but British Airways partners with more transferable rewards programs than Finnair does:

Our Take

Buying Avios from 1.3¢ each provides a solid rate for buying Avios, especially compared to Finnair’s usual pricing. With the 40% discount, members can purchase up to 200,000 Avios and bring the cost down to just 1.3¢ per point.

That said, it’s worth keeping an eye on other Avios partners as well. British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Qatar frequently run their own promotions, and you may find an even better rate elsewhere.

As always, whether this offer makes sense depends on your travel plans. If you’re just a few points short of a high-value redemption for some upcoming travel, now could be a good time to buy. But if you want to take advantage of this Finnair deal, don’t wait too long, since the promotion ends March 30, 2026.

How can I pay in dollar as I am in Germany. VPN and change billing adress is not working?

  • tassojunior says:

doesn’t Qatar have a sale now with no requirement of status to get the 1.3cpp?

  • Ramone says:

Since this years promotion does not grant status, I’d very much prefer they just make it straightforward, not tiered. I’d be in at 100%, probably even at 75% , but not at 40%. Sounds like a fairly small number of people could get access to the best deals

  • Greg says:

Do you know if we can extend the expiration of the points beyond 18 months?

  • Ed says:

Interesting and fairly inexpensive way to get one world status since the points you buy are still worth something. But then you are going to need to use your finnair number everytime you fly to get these benefits and accumulate even more finnair miles unless you change it each time at the gate after check in and lounge visit.

  • Chris says:

Very interesting promotion and would be much more interesting if not for the uncertainty still looming over European travel.

  • CHARLES S COLEMAN says:

This might be a great deal if you really want to gain status on One World. But, is this status good for just one year, or? I am not certain if I would use the points or the status enough to make it worthwhile; especially with the COVID still floating around and countries opening and closing their borders to travel.

  • JANICE L COLEMAN says:

It is a good deal, if you want to gain status with Finair. However, It does not seem that Finair has many of the routes I would be traveling on. So, I will pass on this.
