Citi has announced another round of promotional category bonuses for its premium credit card, the Citi Prestige® Card. Through the end of the year, Prestige Card cardholders can earn 5X points on online, cable, and streaming purchases.

However, like Citi's last promotional category bonus, this one comes with limitations. Namely, you can only earn a maximum of 7,500 bonus through this promotion.

Promotional Bonus Category Key Terms

  • Prestige Card cardholders can earn 5X ThankYou Points per dollar spent on online, cable, and streaming purchases.
  • This promotional bonus category is available now through December 31, 2020.
  • There's no need to register for this promotion.
  • There is no landing page for this promotion. Prestige Card cardholders should have received an email with the promotion.
  • Earn up to a maximum of 7,500 bonus ThankYou points under this promotion.
  • Eligible streaming services include: Amazon Music, Amazon Prime Video, Apple Music, CBS All Access, AT&T TV Now, Disney+, ESPN+, fuboTV, HBO NOW, MLB.TV, NBA League Pass, Netflix, Pandora, Showtime, SiriusXM, Sling TV, Spotify, Starz, Vudu, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV.

As this is the second time Citi has offered a promotion like this, we better understand how the bonus limitation works. On the surface, earning 5X for up to 7,500 points would make you assume that the spending cap is $1,500. However, it's only the extra 4X bonus points (on top of the 1X you'd normally earn) that Citi limits to 7,500. Therefore, the actual spending cap is $1,875 in eligible purchases.

The easiest way to maximize this bonus is through online purchases. This is thanks, in part, to Citi's broad definition of an ‘online purchase'. Like the ‘travel' bonus category with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (review), almost everything you could consider an online purchase qualifies for the bonus. And with the holidays quickly approaching, ‘online purchases' will be a very popular spending category.

Final Thoughts

This 5X bonus category is in addition to the 5X the Prestige Card already earns on airfare and dining.

More and more people have turned to online purchases for everyday purchases and home entertainment. In this way, Citi has done a pretty good job of expanding cardmember benefits to suit the changing financial landscape. Good thing, too. As a premium travel credit card at a time when people aren't traveling, the Prestige Card needed a new way to provide value.

How valuable is earning 5X points on online purchases to you?

  • In October, online purchases weren’t showing 5x TY points on my Citi app but when the statement generated, I did earn 5x. Now in November, Citi app is showing 5x points on my online purchases, so they must have fixed it.

Also Citi’s online purchases seem to include utility bill payments as well. I paid water and electricity bills, and they both earned 5x. I know these don’t count for BofA’s Online Shopping category, so Citi’s definition seems broader.

    • Was this a targeted offer, I made online purchases in Nov and Dec, I can only see 1x. Today statement closed and I didn’t get the 5x

  • Should I expect to see the bonus points arrive at statement close? Made some online purchases with this card, but for now, it only shows as 1x.

    • Hey Brian, that’s correct. Citi has a note about this buried in the ThankYou Rewards FAQs. In short, the TYP awarded and bonuses will reflect your most recent statement period. Here’s the FAQ link (you may need to be logged in for it to work)

      • Jacob A Weiskirch says:

I had the same issue and I message a citi rep in the chat feature on the app and said this promotion was only available to new card members. That doesnt make sense.

  • I’m having trouble keeping track of all the new and/or temporary X times points offers for all my cards. Is there one place I can reference all cards’ points offers and expiration dates?

  • Facundo Fernandez says:

This is great, but does it really work? I have posted more than a comment and never received my extra 5 miles. When should these should be reflected?

  • Awesome for extra bonus for online purchases! Just in time for the holiday season. Looking forward to it!

  • Nice promo for those citi users. I stick with my chase business cash for the 5x internet and phone bills and often the freedom cards do a streaming bonus.

  • CITI have been going wild , by their standards, this past few months. Always appreciate the boost from minimal spend. Glad you mentioned that it’s on $1875 to max out the offer. Most would have missed that.

  • 5X points on online purchases is immensely valuable, since hardly a day goes by without me buying something with my fingertips.

  • Would be awesome to see the CSR get this as well, but if Chase was going to extend the CSR’s benefits, they probably would have announced it by now.

  • Well, the offer is useful because most people will just stay at their own homes for the rest of the year.
