Aegean Airlines is the Greek flag carrier and a Star Alliance member since 2010. Founded in 1995, the relatively young airline serves an array of short-haul destinations with its all-Airbus narrow-body fleet.

Aegean Airlines Miles + Bonus is the airline's loyalty program. Like all programs, it has a mileage expiration policy, although Aegean’s is pretty generous. Here is all you need to know.

Do Aegean Miles Expire

Aegean Airlines Miles + Bonus award miles do not expire as long as your account remains active. per the Aegean FAQ page:

“Award miles do not expire and you may redeem them as long as your Miles+Bonus account remains active*.”

With that said, there's a lack of clarity about what constitutes keeping your account active. So read on to find out what you have to do or not to keep your Aegean account active.

How to Keep Your Aegean Account Active

The simple answer to this is we don’t know, and it is impossible to have a definitive answer.

We have scoured the Aegean site, and there is no mention of how to keep your account active or what can make it go inactive. Multiple older data points online state that in order to keep your account active, you need to take a paid flight every 5 years/60 months.

This information is not in the Aegean terms and conditions, so it is possible that it was an old requirement that has been removed. Or it is still a requirement that was never included in the terms and conditions in the first place. We assume it is the former.

So, if you are going to use Aegean, keep this in mind. However, if you are spending more than 5 years between flights on the same airline, you are probably best served using a different loyalty program.

Using Aegean Miles & Bonus Program

Although not as well known as some of the other major global carriers, Aegean Airlines is one of the unsung heroes of loyalty programs if you are looking for Star Alliance Gold status.

To earn Star Alliance Gold, you need to earn as few as 36,000 miles in a year with a total of six segments on Aegean. This is not particularly difficult since you can earn up to a 200% mileage bonus if you fly with many partners in premium cabins.

If you can't get those Aegean segments, then you need to earn a total of 105,000 miles — 35k to earn Silver and then another 70k to earn Gold.

Aegean redemption sweet spots

When it comes to partner awards, Aegean has some solid sweet spots, including the following round-trip awards:

  • Europe to Indonesia (Bali) in business class for 130,000 miles plus taxes and fees on Turkish Airlines.
  • North America to the Middle East in Lufthansa First Class for 150,000 miles plus taxes and fees.
  • North/Central/South America to Oceania in business class with Singapore Airlines for 150,000 miles plus taxes and fees.
  • North America to Central and South America for 90,000 miles plus taxes and fees in Avianca Business class

Boosting Your Aegean Mileage Balance

Unfortunately, Aegean is not a transfer partner with any of the main U.S. credit card point currencies. However, you still have a couple of options if you want to transfer points to boost your Aegean Mileage Balance.

You can transfer all of the following points to Aegean:

From
To
Transfer Ratio
Min.Transfer
Average Time
Aegean Airlines (Miles & Bonus)
3:1
3,000
3 days
Accor Group (ALL - Accor Live Limitless)
Aegean Airlines (Miles & Bonus)
2,000:1,000

Keep in mind that transferring Accor points at a ratio of 2:1, is probably not the best use of your points. But if you need a small mileage boost, it will do in a pinch.

Our Take

The fact that Aegean miles do not expire and Aegean can be an easy route to Star Alliance elite status, Aegean Airlines is a great program to keep in mind if you are a Star Alliance regular — even if you don’t live in Greece. The lack of transfer partners is unfortunate. But, it is not a critical flaw, especially if you are just after status to leverage its benefits on other flights.
