No, Aegean Airlines Miles + Bonus award miles do not expire as long as your account remains active.

With that said, there's a lack of clarity about what constitutes keeping your account active. So read on to find out what you have to do or not to keep your Aegean account active.

How to Keep You account Active

The simple answer to this is we don’t know. According to an Aegean FAQ page:

“Award miles do not expire and you may redeem them as long as your Miles+Bonus account remains active*.”

However, we have scoured the Aegean site, and there is no mention of how to keep your account active or what makes your account inactive. There are multiple older data points online stating that in order to keep your account active, you need to take a paid flight every 5 years/60 months.

This information is not in the Aegean terms and conditions, so it is very possible that it was an old requirement that has been removed. Or it still is a requirement that was never in the terms and conditions in the first place! We assume it is the former.

So, if you are going to use Aegean, keep this in mind. Although if you are spending more than 5 years between flights on the same airline, you are probably best served using an utterly different loyalty program.

Using Aegean Miles & Bonus Program

Although not as well known as some of the other major global carriers, Aegean Airlines is one of the unsung heroes of loyalty programs if you are looking for Star Alliance Gold status.

To earn Star Gold, you only need to fly 36,000 miles with Aegean in a year. Or, if you predominantly fly other Star Alliance carrier airlines, then you need to hit 48,000 flown miles. This is not particularly difficult since you can earn up to a 200% mileage bonus if you fly with many partners in premium cabins.

Excellent Redemption Sweetspots

When it comes to partner awards, Aegean has some awesome sweet spots, including the following round-trip awards:

  • Europe to Indonesia (Bali) in business class for 130,000 miles plus taxes and fees with Turkish Airlines.
  • North America to the Middle East in Lufthansa First Class for 150,000 miles plus taxes and fees.
  • North/Central/South America to Oceania in business class with Singapore Airlines for 150,000 miles plus taxes and fees.
  • North America to Central and South America for 90,000 miles plus taxes and fees in Avianca Business class

Boosting Your Aegean Mileage Balance

Unfortunately, Aegean is not a transfer partner with any of the main U.S. credit card point currencies. However, you still have a couple of options if you want to transfer points to boost your Aegean Mileage Balance.

You can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to Aegean at a ratio of 3:1 with a  minimum transfer of 3,000 points. Remember, if you are looking to transfer a substantial number of points for a redemption, you can take advantage of Marriott’s built-in transfer bonus, giving you an additional 5,000 miles when you transfer 60,000 points. For every 60,000 Marriott points you transfer to Aegean, you will receive 25,000 miles.

If you have a balance of Accor points, you can transfer them to Aegean at a ratio of 2:1, although that is probably not the best use of your points. But if you need a small mileage boost, it will do in a pinch.

Our Take

With miles that don’t expire and an easy route to elite status, Aegean Airlines is a great program to keep in mind if you are a Star Alliance regular — even if you don’t live in Greece. The lack of transfer partners is unfortunate. But, it is not a critical flaw, especially if you are just after status to leverage its benefits on other flights.

That should be Aegan flight or any Star Alliance flight credited to Miles and Bonus?
