To celebrate the launch of American Airlines daily service from Los Angeles (LAX) direct to Auckland (AKL), AAdvantage is running a bonus miles promotion. AAdvantage members flying between August 15 and October 31, 2016, can earn up to 30,000 AAdvantage bonus miles dependant on the class of fare purchased.

Breaking the Air New Zealand monopoly on the route since Qantas cut its Auckland-LA service in 2012, American's new direct service will use the new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner featuring 226 seats, including 28 lie-flat business class seats and 55 extra leg room economy seats. WiFi will be available throughout the entire aircraft for a flight pass of US$19.

American Airlines 30000 Bonus Miles LA-AKLYou can earn 15,000 bonus miles per roundtrip in business class and 2500 per roundtrip in economy, valid for a maximum of two roundtrips.

Registration opens on June 23, 2016, and you must register before travel using the promotional code AKL16, purchasing a qualifying business or economy class seat and completing travel by October 31.

Includes Business Class fares booked in J, R, D or I; Select Economy Class fares booked in Y, H, K, M, L, W, V, G, Q, N, O or S on American Airlines marketed flights.

Final Thoughts

If you have plans to travel to New Zealand inside the qualifying dates the bonus points will be a welcome addition. For the cost of transpacific tickets, however, I can't see it making financial sense to book this one just for the bonus miles.

You can catch the full terms and conditions on the promotion page.
