Aeroplan's popular hotel points transfer bonus promotion is back! Through August 15, 2016, hotel points transfers to Aeroplan (Air Canada's rewards program) is even more rewarding as you can receive an Aeroplan miles bonus, which varies, depending on how many points you transfer. The more points you transfer, the higher the bonus with a maximum of 55,000 Aeroplan miles.

Earn up to 55,000 bonus Aeroplan MilesAll hotel points transfers that net at least 2,500 Aeroplan miles during the promotional period will be eligible to earn a bonus. The chart below shows the number of bonus miles you will earn based on what you transfer:

Aeroplan Promotion Bonus ChartAeroplan's popular hotel points transfer bonus promotion terms and conditions.

Aeroplan miles are among the most valuable rewards currencies thanks to an attractive award chart, membership in the global airline alliance – Star Alliance, the ability to be able to book one-ways and capacity to include two stopovers on roundtrip awards, among many other reasons.

The biggest drawback to Aeroplan is that they impose “fuel” surcharges on awards depending on the airlines involved. However, the number of airlines for which they impose fuel surcharges, including Air Canada, is smaller than the number of carriers for which they do not impose fuel surcharges, a partial list of which includes United, Copa, Turkish and South African Airways.

Transferring SPG Points

Most major hotel rewards currencies are transferable to Aeroplan, including Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG), Marriott Rewards, and Hilton Honors. SPG Starpoints transfers to Aeroplan can be particularly valuable as the transfer ratio is one-to-one and you get a 5,000 miles bonus for every 20,000 Starpoints you transfer (20,000 SPG Points nets you 25,000 Aeroplan miles typically / without this promotion).

Keep in mind that the amount that triggers the Aeroplan bonus is based on the number of miles deposited into Aeroplan. For example, if you transfer 60,000 SPG points, the Aeroplan bonus will be based on 75,000 miles, which is tht number of miles SPG will transfer to your Aeroplan account. Remember, for every 20,000 SPG points you transfer to Aeroplan you receive a bonus 5,000 (from SPG) — their deposit is 75,000 miles. Adding an extra 10,000 Aeroplan miles, thanks to this promotion, you net 85,000 Aeroplan miles for your 60,000 SPG point transfer.

Sum of All Transfers

Another factor to consider is that the Aeroplan bonus is based on the total number of miles being transferred into Aeroplan during the promotion period, not each particular transfer. This means that two separate 40,000 SPG points transferred (80,000 SPG points in total) would yield 125,000 Aeroplan miles, which are enough for a roundtrip business class award to anywhere in Europe or South America!

Conclusion

As always, despite the valuable transfer bonus, speculative transfers likely aren't your best move. If you were considering booking an Aeroplan award with the help of a hotel points transfer already and the award availability you want is there, do not hesitate about taking advantage of this promotion. Otherwise, it is probably better to pass on this offer. Aeroplan has run this type of promotion many times, so you shouldn't feel any pressure to have to take advantage of it now.
