In the world of award travel, the only thing that stays the same is that everything changes. Well, maybe not everything. But, travelers know by now that devaluations are a thing to expect. And painful “annual award chart updates” are set to hit the World of Hyatt program effective March 28, 2023.
The World of Hyatt loyalty program has long been the darling of many points and miles enthusiasts — and for good reason. It's hard to argue the value the Hyatt program offers with its points being some of the easiest to extract value from. The hashtag #hyatt4life was even birthed from devotees' love for the brand, though time will tell if this devaluation will see some jump off the bandwagon.
Hyatt Category Changes in 2023
Let's not sugarcoat things. The vast majority of these award category changes are rough, so we'll get to it. Several properties are moving up from categories 4 to 5 and 7 to 8 — thus eliminating the use of some of the category 1-4 and category 1-7 free night awards for these locations.
A total of 214 Hyatt hotels and resorts will move up in category (costing more points) and 158 will move down (costing fewer points).
These award category changes go into effect as of March 28, 2023 at 8 am. That means you still have time to utilize the current award chart before the changes go into effect.
Here's some important information on how the transition period works:
- All nights booked before 8 am March 28 will follow the current award chart even for dates booked after the changes go into effect.
- Nights booked at a property that goes down in category will receive a one-time refund of points for the difference.
- After the new award chart is adopted any changes to existing reservations will follow the new award chart.

Notes on Hyatt Peak/Off-Peak Pricing
Remember that World of Hyatt introduced peak and off-peak pricing starting March 1, 2022. Thus, the values in the tables above reflect standard pricing. The number of points you need for a stay with Hyatt could be more or less, depending on what pricing model is in effect for your stay. Things like holidays, demand, and other local trends can affect award pricing and the peak/standard/off-peak calendar.
What To Do Now
This hobby is ever-changing and unpredictable, so when news like this comes it can be unsettling, but it can also be that bump we need to book that trip we've been considering. Maybe it's time to finally jump into the earning side and get the points you'd need to book one of these hotels.
Now that we know about the hotel category changes for 2023, let's look at what this means for you in terms of World of Hyatt redemptions.
Book Hyatt Awards Nights Now
If you want to book now for a hotel that will go down in price, there's no harm in doing so. You will be reimbursed for the points difference after March 28, 2023. This is a customer-friendly move, and you can lock in your reservation now before rooms disappear at the property you want.
On the flip side, if you have your eye on a property that will go up in price, you should absolutely book it before March 28, 2023. Hyatt won't make you pay the difference after changes, so you can book now to get a lower rate. Keep in mind that any changes to your reservation after March 28, 2023 would require paying the higher rate.
Free Night Award Implications
The biggest implications are properties changing to or from category 4 and category 7. That's because Hyatt ties free night awards to these categories.
If a hotel was previously a category 5 property but is now a category 4 property, you will be able to use category 1-4 free night awards to book that hotel. On the flip side, if a hotel goes from category 4 up to 5, you can no longer use your free night awards to stay there.
You can receive a category 1-4 free night award each year by:
- holding the The World of Hyatt Credit Card — cardholders get a free night award certificate each year.
- spending $15,000 in a year on the World of Hyatt Card.
- staying at 5 (or 10 or 15) Hyatt brands through the Hyatt Brand Explorer perk.
- staying 30 nights with Hyatt in a year through Milestone Rewards.
Changes to/from Category 7 matter because of the free night award you can get after staying 60 nights with Hyatt in a year. A property that's increasing from category 7 to category 8 will no longer be bookable with these awards.
So, check the expiration on your Category 1-4 and 1-7 free night awards and start booking! As long as you book the hotel with a certificate before March 28 at 8 am, you'll still be able to use that free night award.
Bottom Line
While this news is bleak I wouldn't say it's time to pack it up and wave adieu to Hyatt in favor of another brand. Loyalists and free agents alike will continue to find value in Hyatt points and enjoy the diverse range of properties to experience.

Wow, quite a few here that would potentially affect me…
I’ve already booked the Wentworth in Charleston for April 2, and I was already iffy about it at the current rate. I’m glad we’re staying there but probably won’t again under the new pricing.
I had considered the Chicago Athletic Association since I need an Unbound Collection property for Brand Explorer. With this and the Eliza Jane changing, the only remaining category 4 of this brand in the U.S. will be the Bellevue in Philadelphia. I can’t imagine I’d pick the CAA now with the nearby 2 Centrics, 2 Regencies, and Thompson and Ambassador remaining at cat.4 or below.
Finally, and biggest of all, I’ve been to the Hyatt Ziva Cancun twice and was hoping to try the Zilara next time. That’s an enormous jump for both of them. I might have to try Secrets or Dreams instead.
