Hyatt has a plethora of hotel brands ranging from extended stays like Hyatt House to high-end luxury properties such as Park Hyatt. And as of 2019, Hyatt's brands include the Destination by Hyatt brand.

So far, Destination by Hyatt has consisted of hotels and resorts — which have always been bookable with points. Until recently, though, Destination residences were not as widely available. But now, you can book 32 more residence properties with your World of Hyatt points. That expands the Destination by Hyatt brand to a total of 60 locations:

What is a Vacation Rental?

Vacation rentals differ from traditional hotels and resorts in that you are staying in someone's home — whether it's an apartment, traditional house, etc. Some of the more familiar and popular vacation rental companies you've heard of are AirBnB and VRBO.

Destination by Hyatt's residences is Hyatt's own version of VRBO. And true to the Hyatt brand, Destination locations are all upper-scale accommodations meant to give an entire experience rather than just a hotel room. Or in Hyatt's words, this gives you the opportunity to “escape to a vacation home to live like a local and truly immerse in the culture of a community.”

Destination residence properties include a completely furnished kitchen. Since eating out at restaurants can add up, families and large groups may find excellent value booking these.

New Room Category for Hyatt Awards

Additionally, Hyatt has introduced another room type called a “Premium Room”. Before now, Hyatt classified award bookings into 4 room types — each with its own points rate:

  • Standard Room
  • Club Room — a standard room which includes club access
  • Standard Suite
  • Premium Suite

But because many residences are entire houses rather than just a room, these don't really fit into the existing categories. So, it makes sense that Hyatt would introduce a new room type. For Destination by Hyatt residences, the rooms types are as follows:

  • Standard Room
  • Premium Room
  • Standard Suite
  • Premium Suite

Premium Rooms are priced at the same award cost as Club Rooms. So, there will still be four award types to Hyatt's award chart:

Final Thoughts

Hyatt is continuously rolling out more and more options to use your points. It's great to see such an amazing program continue to increase its footprint and open the door to so many possibilities.

Are you excited about the ability to book residences with points? Where will you stay?

  • I think that instead of going to go to the house rental segment Hyatt should concentrate on the hotels. Airbnb is so much bigger there is no comppetition.
Of course maybe someone would prefer interact with Hyatt.

  • I’ve found Hyatt to have some of the worst customer service in the hospitality industry.

  • I like this move by Hyatt to diversify its business model. Similar to their Work from Hyatt initiative. Seems like the pandemic has gotten hotels to rethink their business model is a positive way in my books!

  • I wonder how they come up with new “destination residences” since they are people’s homes.

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if they just looked at Airbnb’s inventory and directly targeted who they wanted. Those folks have no contract with Airbnb, and I would think several would jump at the right offer. The competition should only help homeowners and customers.

  • Really wish Hyatt points were easier to earn outside the US, even transfer partners seem to be non-existent.

  • Excellent! I will keep in mind. Thanks!

  • This is great news for skiers. Looking forward to booking one of these for a group trip, when safe to do so.

  • Excellent addition to the program!

  • Good to know that the Hyatt portfolio is increasing, thanks

  • These properties will be quickly booked up during the ski seasons.

  • This is a great improvement! Can’t wait to visit one soon.

  • Excellent direction! Far preferable (IMO) to AirBnB and the like.

  • Someone must be ready to splurge on the new room types 🙂

  • Intriguing new possibilities at the best value hotel program among the major players….Hyatt may have a smaller footprint of hotels than Marriott or Hilton, but they consistently provide better value with their points program….good move Hyatt!

  • Hyatt SORELY needs more locations so this is a HUGE plus. Hopefully the trend continues.

  • I’m loving all of the additional mountain and ski destination options that they added. You usually need to book those types of destinations far in advance though or the allotment for reward redemption sells out.

  • Wow, nice to see some larger Hawaii properties available.

  • Interesting. Never even knew about this program to be honest. It makes sense why the locations are what they are, but I hope they add more across the country eventually. These 32 are a nice addition to the other list though.

  • I will keep in mind if I ever travel to CO or HI.
