In December, Marriott announced a long-term agreement with outdoor-focused hotel brand Trailborn. Since then, Marriott has moved quickly to integrate the boutique hotel brand into its systems. As of today, Marriott Bonvoy members can now earn Bonvoy points on Trailborn stays and enjoy some elite perks.

Travelers should soon be able to redeem Bonvoy points for stays as well, although we haven't seen any bookable options quite yet.

Here's what to know about this new addition to the Marriott Bonvoy program.

What is Trailborn?

Trailborn describes itself as “bringing bespoke hotels built for adventure to the great American outdoors.” As described in Marriott's press release announcing the partnership:

Trailborn offers design-forward accommodations inspired by each property's unique locale, experience-driven programming, curated food and beverage offerings, and insightful property teams to help guests chart their exploration.

The brand's current portfolio consists of just 559 rooms across five destinations, including properties near Rocky Mountain National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Highlands, NC. Trailborn has future expansions planned for Wrightsville Beach, NC and Mendocino, CA.

Earning Marriott Bonvoy Points at Trailborn Properties

Travelers staying at Trailborn Properties can now earn Marriott Bonvoy points provided you book through official Marriott channels or qualifying Trailborn channels — including via Trailborn’s website, Trailborn support team, or directly with a Trailborn property.

Marriott Bonvoy members will earn 10 points per dollar spent at Trailborn hotels. Just make sure to add your Marriott Bonvoy account number to your reservation at the time of check-in if you don't book directly through Marriott.

Marriott Elite Benefits and Exclusions at Trailborn

As Trailborn Properties now participates in the Marriott Bonvoy program, travelers are now eligible to get the following benefits at Trailborn properties:

  • Elite Welcome Gift: Marriott Gold Elite members will be able to select an Elite Welcome Gift of 500 points per stay. Platinum Elite and higher members will get 1,000 bonus points per stay or a $10 food and beverage credit per night for the member plus up to one guest.
  • Ultimate Reservation Guarantee: If a Trailborn property isn't able to accommodate your confirmed booking, Marriott elite members will get compensation of $200 plus 90,000 Bonvoy points.
  • Guaranteed Room Type: If a Trailborn property doesn't have the room type you booked or another qualifying preference, Platinum Elite members and higher get $100 in compensation.

If that list seems short, that's because Trailborn hotels are excluded from a long list of Bonvoy benefits. According to the Marriott Bonvoy terms and conditions, the following benefits are not available at Trailborn locations:

  • Member Rates
  • Gift Shop Discount
  • Guaranteed Lounge Access
  • Nightly Upgrade Awards
  • 48-Hour Guaranteed Availability
  • Instant Redemption Awards

Final Thoughts

The addition of Trailborn hotels to Marriott Bonvoy marks yet another expansion into nature-related locations for U.S. hotel brands — such as Hilton's partnership with AutoCamp and Hyatt's partnership with Under Canvas. Although Trailborn currently has just five locations, hopefully it can expand much quicker thanks to this Marriott integration.

For Marriott Bonvoy members, this partnership means more opportunities to earn points in off-the-beaten-path locations, especially in nature-rich areas where major hotel brands have limited presence. However, the elite benefit exclusions mark yet another Marriott hotel brand where you won't get the same level of perks as Marriott's core hotel brands.
