Cathay Pacific has launched a promotion giving you 20% off awards on select routes from Hong Kong to Europe, and the U.S. The awards must be booked by August 26, 2019; however, the travel window varies by route. The discount applies to economy awards only.
Key Terms
- Receive a 20% discount on select Cathay Pacific awards
- Bookings must be made by August 26th, 2019.
- The discount applies to awards in economy class.
- The discount applies to select routes only.
- No open-jaw awards are allowed.
- Discount applies to one-way and round-trip awards.
The travel dates for each award vary by route, with most starting at eh beginning of October and ending at the end of November. You will need to check the full terms and conditions for the exact travel dates of the award you are interested in.
One thing to note is that the promotion does not apply to round-trip awards on all flights. And you can only book a discounted award from Hong Kong to Boston on flight CX812. The same applies to the Hong Kong to Zurich route, and you can only receive a discount on flight CX271.
Great Options to the U.S. and Europe
There are some great options on flights to/from the U.S. The following routes benefit from the 20% discount:
- Flights between Hong Kong and Boston – CX812
- Flights between Hong Kong and Los Angeles
- Flights between Hong Kong and New York (Newark)
- Flights between Hong Kong and San Francisco
- Flights between Hong Kong and Seattle

The picture for Europe is also exciting, and you can receive a 20% discount off the following routes:

- Flights between Hong Kong and Dublin
- Flights between Hong Kong and Frankfurt
- Flights between Hong Kong and Zurich
Our Take
If you need to get to and from Hong Kong, then this promotion could make sense. However, a 20% discount on awards that only applies to economy cabins is not something to write home about—especially considering many of the U.S. routes are more than 12 hours in the air. Sadly, if you wanted to sample Cathay’s excellent premium cabins, you are better off leaving this promotion on the table.

Seems harder to redeem Asia Miles these days.
Given the on-going issues in Hong Kong, including for Cathay Pacific, I’d expect more deals to appear in the near future because there is no doubt current events are affecting their bottom line.
Does anyone have experience with the current situation in HK? If the airport is closed does Cathay take care of you?
Hong Kong is somewhere I would love to visit, and a 20% discount makes it all the more attractive.
with cash fares so low at the moment using a redemption for economy does not make sense.
Too bad this is only on economy class.
Not one of the better discounts for non-RT flight to HK but if you are already making a trip out there then a little discount is better than none?
Not sure this is the best time to stop by HK ! As a matter of fact, shares of Cathay are on the decline in a significant way!
Sure. HK is a sweetspot now! And in whY!
What about London?
Quite attractive, but the unrest in Hong Kong at the moment would make me think twice before booking anything that touches that region.
Promotion doesn’t seem to work for OneWorld awards on CX.
No thanks, the protesting and delays in Hong Kong is not worth it.
Surely that will be over soon
Wouldn’t be so sure of that, unfortunately. Hard to predict end, as I’m not sure there’s a satisfactory solution for both parties.
I wonder how long these deals will last. Maybe if the protests blow over soon, this might be something I’m interested in.
well the award doesn’t mean much if they cancel your flight or shut down the airport…. with the Chinese military already staging you might want to see how things play out before you book
How does do the Cathay awards compare with redeeming AA or AS on Cathay?
I love using Cathay to fly to Asia. However, there might be a travel advisory due the protesting of loss of rights in Hong Kong.
Probably not the best idea to travel to hk based on the current situations.
I agree with the above poster. Except for rare cases, 14 hours in economy is tough.
A nice incentive actually! One World partners don’t often discount their award travel
I respectfully disagree. 14 or more hours is simply too far in to go Economy, even with 20% off.
Before I got into this game, spending 12+ hrs in Economy was normal. People do it all the time.
It’s not a great use of points to redeem for economy though really, I wouldn’t say.
Interesting method to avoid the protesting that is occurring in Hong Kong right now.
