American Airlines AAdvantage® miles are a popular choice among U.S. travelers — and for good reason. The program has some excellent redemption options, especially on international partner flights. So it’s only natural to wonder: Can you transfer credit card points to American Airlines?
The short answer is yes — but your options are limited. There’s now one major transfer partner you’ll want to know about, plus a couple of niche workarounds and historical footnotes. In this post, we’ll cover all the current American Airlines transfer partners and highlight the best ways to keep the miles rolling in.

Does American Airlines Have Transfer Partners?
One of the most common award travel questions we get is whether American Airlines has transfer partners. After all, transferring credit card points is one of the best ways to maximize your hard-earned rewards, and AAdvantage has some great sweet spots, so it makes sense to want to accumulate as many AAdvantage miles as you can.
The answer is yes — but you don't have many options.

Credit card transfer partners
American Airlines currently has a single credit card transfer partner: Citi ThankYou® Rewards. AA was re-added as an official Citi transfer partner on July 27, 2025, after nearly a four-year hiatus. You can now transfer Citi Points to AAdvantage at a 1:1 ratio in increments of 1,000 points. That’s a big deal, especially considering how many ways there are to earn Citi Points.
But if you want to take advantage of these transfers, you’ll need to have at least one of the following cards: the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card, Citi Strata Premier® Card, or Citi Prestige® Card, which is no longer open to new applicants.
Other ways to use credit card points for American Airlines flights
You can’t transfer other kinds of points — like American Express Membership Rewards or Capital One miles — to AAdvantage. However, you still have options for using these points to book American Airlines flights.
First, you can redeem those credit card points to book American Airlines paid flights by going through the card issuer’s travel portal. While you'll get a fixed rate for your points, the downside is that it's usually only one cent per point.
Or, if you want to book AA flights with credit card points at a potentially outsized value, you can leverage other programs that offer access to American Airlines award space — such as British Airways Club, Iberia Plus, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Etihad Guest, and more. Better yet, you can use these currencies to book AA flights, and these programs are all common credit card transfer partners.
And formerly, Bilt Rewards points transferred to American Airlines at a 1:1 ratio, but this partnership ended in June 2024.

Hotel transfer partners
American Airlines has two hotel transfer partners: Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt. If you can’t (or don’t want to) use your hotel points for free nights, you can transfer them to AAdvantage. But given poor transfer ratios, we don't recommend this.
Of the two options, converting Marriott points to airline miles can sometimes make sense. Marriott points transfer to AA at a 3:1 ratio. However, unlike other Marriott airline partners, you won’t get a bonus for transferring at least 60,000 points. But since there's an extensive lineup of Marriott credit cards, it's pretty easy to rack up a meaningful amount of points.
AwardWallet users, on average, redeem Marriott points at 0.94¢ apiece. So if you can get at least three times that value from your AAdvantage miles, the transfer becomes easier to justify. But just keep in mind these transfers aren’t instant — they can take up to a few days to process.
Top Ways to Earn American Airlines Miles
There are plenty of reasons to earn American Airlines miles, and while AA doesn’t have many transfer partners, you still have plenty of ways to earn them.
One of the most straightforward options is applying for an American Airlines credit card and meeting the minimum spending requirement. This is arguably the best (and fastest) way to earn tens of thousands of valuable miles.

- Earn 2X miles on American Airlines purchases
- Earn 1X miles on all other purchases

- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent at restaurants
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent at gas stations
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases
- Earn 1X mile for every $1 spent on all other purchases

- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on cable and satellite providers
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent at gas stations
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on select telecommunications merchants
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on car rentals
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases
- Earn 1X mile for every $1 spent on all other purchases
Cards like the AA Platinum Select and Citi AAdvantage Business Card usually have a competitive welcome bonus, and while it's still open to new applicants, the Aviator Red offers bonus miles after making your first purchase and paying the annual fee in full, both within the first 90 days.
If you're tapped out on AA credit cards, remember that you can also transfer Citi ThankYou Points to AA if you have an eligible card. Thus, you might consider earning the welcome bonus on the Citi Strata Premier® Card or the new Citi Strata Elite and kicking those rewards over to AAdvantage.

Final Thoughts
American Airlines doesn’t have many transfer partners — and in some ways, that’s a good thing. It helps preserve the value of these miles. Flooding the zone with transfer partners means more accounts with lots of miles competing for AA’s best sweet spots, which can make it a little harder to snag one for yourself.
