Air France KLM Visa: What's New and What's Staying the Same
There are a handful of changes that Flying Blue’s lone U.S. credit card just underwent. Most notably, the card is switching from a Mastercard to a Visa Signature Card. Along with the network change comes a few new perks.
What's staying the same with the Air France KLM Visa
Before we get into what's new, let’s take a look at the features that will remain the same on the Air France KLM Visa:
- 3X miles per $1 spent on eligible Air France, KLM, and SkyTeam member airline purchases
- 1.5X miles per $1 on all other purchases
- Earn 5,000 miles every year on your account anniversary when you spend $50 during the year
- Receive 20 XP each account anniversary
- The card’s annual fee remains $89

What's new with the Air France KLM Visa
Here are the new perks and benefits being added to the card:
- 3X miles per $1 on eligible dining purchases
- Earn an additional 80 XP (up from 40 XP) on your account anniversary when you spend $15,000 or more in purchases during the anniversary year
- Earn an additional 60 XP on your account anniversary after you spend $25,000 or more in purchases during the anniversary year
Air France KLM Visa Welcome Offer
If you're interested in applying for the Air France KLM Visa, new applicants can earn 50,000 bonus miles and 100 XP after you make $2,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of your account opening.
XP (Experience Points) is Flying Blue’s loyalty currency used to earn elite status. The ability to earn XP through the welcome offer, along with the card’s elevated XP earning through spending, can make it easier to work your way toward status.
Why Flying Blue XP matter
Flying Blue has a somewhat complicated system for earning elite status. The program uses a rolling 12-month qualification period starting from the date you earn your first XP, rather than a traditional calendar year.
Here are the program’s status tiers:
- Silver: 100 XP
- Gold: 180 XP
- Platinum: 300 XP
- Ultimate: 900 XP

Once you reach a tier, your XP total resets. From there, you’ll need to earn the next threshold (for example, an additional 180 XP to move from Silver to Gold), and so on up the ladder.
Because of that, the XP you can earn through the welcome bonus or card spending can help you reach Silver status surprisingly quickly. Flying Blue Silver includes perks like:
- Earn 6 miles per euro on Air France and KLM-marketed flights and selected add-ons
- Priority check-in, baggage drop-off, and boarding
- Some free seat options starting 24 hours before departure
- Free standard seat selection
- One extra checked bag free on SkyTeam flights
All told, the revamped card is valuable not just for the welcome offer, but also for the ability to earn status without even stepping on an Air France or KLM flight.
Bottom Line
Before its revamp, the Flying Blue credit card available to U.S. residents was only mildly interesting. With this updated Visa version, the card now offers a much stronger set of perks and benefits.
The addition of 3X miles per dollar on dining, along with significantly higher XP earning potential, makes it easier to rack up both miles and elite status faster than before. For Flying Blue loyalists, or anyone looking to earn miles and unlock SkyTeam benefits, the Air France KLM Visa should definitely be on your radar.
