American Airlines has announced its 5k challenge promotion, which will earn you up to 5K bonus miles for completing 5 qualifying activities. The announcement came at the same time that American Airlines unveiled a new look to the AAdvantage account homepage.
Key Terms
- You need to register and complete your activities by September 30, 2018
- Activities completed prior to registration will not count towards your bonus
- There is no direct link to the promotion; you can access it by logging in to your AA account
The Promotion is tiered with the more activities completed, the more bonus point you earn. The tiers are as follows:
- Complete 1 activity earn 50 bonus miles
- Complete 2 activities earn 250 bonus miles
- Complete 3 activities earn 1,000 bonus miles
- Complete 4 activities earn 2,500 bonus miles
- Complete 5 activities earn 5,000 bonus miles
What AA class as an activity is as follows, and you need to complete each one at least once. Using the same activities several times does not qualify as multiple activities.
- Fly on an American Airlines marketed and operated flight
- Make any purchase with AAdvantage Shopping
- Book and stay at a hotel at bookaahotels.com
- Dine-in or carry out with AAdvantage Dining
- Rent and drive a car at aa.com
The New AA Account Homepage
The new page adds a lot of clarity and makes it easier to access the more important relevant information. The top of the page has key information about your account, as well as tabs to access your AA wallet and promotions.
Below you can find your Elite status qualification progress displaying as an infographic, and below that, you will find any upcoming trips you have with AA.
Our Take
The new look to the homepage is good; it is modern easy to understand and provides you with all the information you need without the need to click through multiple sub menus. Like everything new, it will take some time to get used to and for you to be able to use it frustration-free.
Registering for the 5K challenge is precisely the kind of promotion we love. Take a second or two of your time, to register, and from now through September 30, 2018, you earn bonus points for an activity you planned to take part in. It is worth registering even if you have no plans that fit the promotion, since you never know when they might pop up, and you still earn a bonus if you only complete a few of the activities.

Since I signed up just before an upcoming trip, I’ve completed 4 out of 5 of these – the car rental isn’t going to happen. But, the hotel hasn’t reported the points, so it only shows 3 completed. AA’s site say I need to contact the hotel about it. You’d think they’d have that automated, but apparently not.
I got so far 250 bonus points for 2 activities I would have done anyway. That is on top of the usual miles I earned for the 2 activities (dining for miles and online shopping).
I got so far 250 bonus miles with this promo – for 2 activities I would have done anyway. No-brainer.
This is a great promo! Will probably only complete dining in this window but won’t sneeze at 50 points for something I would do anyway!
Shame we just learned of this promo at the end of summer, and not before we took our family trip!! Three would have been in the bag already! Always looking for new promos!! Thanks for sharing.
It is difficult to complete all 5 after Summer travel is done, but I will register anyway.
Great initiative, I am already on my 3rd activity
I would definitely take advantage of this offer, but my miles expire in 13 days. A good question I have is whether a regular flight booked a month ago, but to be flown 7 days after my miles are set to expire, will that reset the expiration date, or will my miles just be expired by then? I haven’t been able to find the answer anywhere online.
Flights flown after your miles expire won’t reset your date, however, commenting on this post is a great way of preventing your miles from expiring (https://awardwallet.com/blog/earn-bonus-miles-for-commenting/), we just can’t guarantee they will post in time. Best of luck
This is great offer for AA frequent flyers
Just joined. This is a great way to keep up with airline news and find great value. Looking forward to being an active member.
For me this promo was a no-brainer, since I would have done dining for miles and online shopping anyway. I’m not going to book a hotel stay just for the bonus miles though.
Thanks for this helpful post!
WOW! Thank you! I would never have noticed this mileage bonus if you hadn’t pointed it out to us. Registered!
Any points are good points!
2 down, 3 to go 🙂
I’m flying LEVEL in a month (https://www.flylevel.com/) which does credit AAdvantage miles on their flights, they are an IAG/Iberia subsidiary. Any idea of this would be one of the qualifying activities?
Thanks
Unfortunately no. It must be an AA marketed (AA flight number) and AA operated (AA aircraft) — partners don’t count here.
It is difficult to complete all 5, but will register anyway as I might get 1 or 2.
The links don’t take me to a registration page, and I am not finding the promo anywhere on aa.com (??).
does this link? https://www.aa.com/aadvantage-program/profile/promotions
Thanks for the helpful post!
Registered. But we’ll see – I have a flight booked with AA already for later this month. The terms say activity must occur after registration. I wonder if that means the booking must occur after registering, or the actual flight?
Booking prior to registration looks to be ok according to the terms – you just need to fly after you register.
Howie – just wondering… This is the second time I’ve done a comment here and didn’t receive the 5 points for AA. I was logged into AwardWallet, the box popped up about the points going to AA, and I made sure it was selected. Any ideas why I’m not getting those points?
points take up to 5 business days to post as indicated in the linked article in the popup. If they haven’t posted within 5 days please email howie@awardwallet with your full name, aa account #, and a link to your comment.
Hopefully found the problem. AwardWallet didn’t have the password – said it was stored locally on the computer. I know that it did have it before because I’ve received points in the past for comments. Not sure why that happened, but we’ll see if I get the points for this comment. 🙂
That wouldn’t have any impact on your receiving miles — only AwardWallet updating your AA account balance.
Howie, I have the same issue with the AA password stored locally. How do I get the AA password into the AW database? I’m looking forward to posting some comments and collecting the 5 AA miles. Thanks.
It is not possible.
Just registered.
thanks for the information, it will help me soon!!
Not a bad promo. Some of these tasks are fairly easy.
DOH! I just stayed at a hotel I booked through them last weekend!
Too bad non-US residents are more often than not excluded
Time to move!
AA homepage is nicer to look at and easier to navigate.
So very much agree. Been waiting seemingly forever for them to update their site, improve my booking experience and reduce my time spent.
I’ll register, but not a game changer. Miss the old days. 🙁
Thanks for the info. I will be registering!
I have enrolled and am ready to earn, at least a couple activities.
I wonder if this will stack on top of any promos they do during back to school. Too bad my next flight will be after this promo ends. I’m sure they’ll have another at some point that will correspond.
I’m more than happy to get points for some things I do anyway :o)
How soon after posting a comment will I see my miles (need to save expiring miles)?
It’ll take up to 5 business days.
50 points for one activity is a bit of a joke!
signed up. thank you!
Registered, thanks!
I’m so PO. I had just booked two flights the morning the promo dropped (email was time stamped 630pm). I think I have one more flight for work so that will help and I already had the dining. I agree with previous poster their rentals are more expensive because of the airline miles exchange, plus I don’t need one for any of my trips. This is some chump change points. But hoping it makes me eligible to other targeted promos in the future.
Do the points count toward status?
Any miles earned in this promo do not count towards status.
Easy sign up. Easy FFM’s. Easily a no-brainier!
I’ll probably only do three, but free miles are free miles
thanks, registered!
Thanks, won’t be able to do all of them, but a few easy bonus miles are always welcome.
Does registering renew miles about to expire?
Earning miles will extend their life — commenting on this blog will as well.
Will be worth signing up and seeing how far I get with the activities. Thanks for the heads up.
Since signing up, I’ve already completed the dining requirement. I’ll be sure to use the AA shopping portal the next time I buy something online. I’ll definitely be flying AA before the time is up. I will have to see whether renting the car is worth it — they always seem to have a higher price when renting through an airline portal. The only one that will give me problems is the hotel: I really dislike not getting the hotel points and stay credit when I book through other than the hotel site. I’ll have to weigh the benefits of that one over completing the current IHG accelerate promotion.
I’m assuming American Eagle flights would qualify for this promo ?
Yes, indeed.
Yeah, probably won’t get the whole 5K – unlikely to fly AA or rent and credit to them in this timeframe, but a few extra miles for a couple activities is always good.
AWESOME!
thanks for the heads up.. looks like I’ll just miss this one as my next flight it Oct 2nd. bummer..
I doubt if I’ll be able to do all of the activities, but for sure I could manage a dine and some portal shopping which I do customarily anyway.
Dine and shop is easy. I found convenient places near enough where I work where I can take out lunch, or one place where I can get a cup of soup for about $30 (unless I want to get down to a soda or chips I don’t want). Shopping can consist of a Groupon gift card at Giftcertificates.com. The other three aren’t happening this time, so for 250 miles, I’m out.
I like the new look of their page.
Thanks for the info! I will register ASAP. However, I doubt that I will be needing rental car or hotel room anytime soon.
Seems like not a bad deal if you are all in on AA. In fact the dinging one looks like a great idea, and I wasn’t even aware of it.
Looks like if you sign up with their Dining Program (supposedly can register any credit card?) you get 1,000 points if you spend more than $25 with the list of their restaurants. I will be doing this I think, even better deal than this one! (https://aa.rewardsnetwork.com/bonus.htm)
I like the new home page look.. but the 5k is not really enough for all these activities (flying AA, renting a car, booking hotels,etc).. I think they should’ve increased it to 50K
Wow this is great! AA is my primary airline, so will be working on this super promo!!!
Thx again!
As non US resident two activities are from the start not possible!
So I will pass this promo.
