Is This Aegean Award Sale Worth It?

Considering that Aegean fares tend to be on the cheaper side of things, especially for shorter flights and those within Europe. You will have to crunch the numbers for each award on a case-by-case basis.

For instance, a flight from London to Athens next spring will cost you $150.67 in economy or $385.84 in business. At such a low price point, it might be hard to see how an award would make sense. However…

Toggling over to award pricing, we see that the same flights will set you back from 8,372 miles in economy and 15,698 miles in business.

Crunching the numbers, that works out at a value of 1.79 cents per point in economy class and 2.45 cents per point in business class. Those are some really solid redemption rates, but only you are able to determine whether this value is good enough for your miles — especially if you are transferring points to Aegean.

Earning Aegean Miles+Bonus Miles

Building up a sizable mileage balance can be challenging if you don't fly Aegean regularly or credit partner flights to Miles + Bonus. On top of that, the airline has no credit card transfer partners or a co-branded credit card available to U.S. applicants.

But not all is lost. You can earn Miles + Bonus miles by transferring Marriott Bonvoy points to Aegean at a ratio of 3:1. You'll also receive a 5,000-point bonus for every 60,000 points you move to Aegean. Transferring 60,000 Bonvoy points to Miles + Bonus will net you 25,000 Aegean miles, which isn't a great return.

Another way to grow your balance of Miles + Bonus miles is by swapping your Accor points for Aegean miles. Transfers require a minimum of 2,000 Accor points to kick off, and you'll receive one Aegean mile for every two Accor points you convert.

As a last resort, you can buy Miles + Bonus miles for $27 (25 EUR) per thousand. In the right circumstance, this could make sense if you needed to top off your account to make a redemption. However, Aegean's flights are generally priced reasonably enough to make this option worth passing up.

All in all, you'll likely pay more when you buy the necessary miles and then pay the taxes and fees on the redemption than if you booked a cash fare.

Final Thoughts

Aegean Airlines — the flag carrier of Greece — has put 370,000+ award seats and its entire route network on sale. Even better, those seats are bookable for 30% off. This promotion can be very lucrative if it fits your travel plans and makes sense in terms of point value. However, you'll want to do the math to confirm that redeeming miles provides good value.

To take advantage of this promotion, you'll want to act fast. The booking window closes on November 14, 2024, which leaves you less than three weeks to make travel plans.
