As an Air Canada Aeroplan elite member, you're likely familiar with eUpgrades. These nifty credits allow you to upgrade to a higher class of service on an Air Canada flight. In some changes announced today, Air Canada is adjusting the expiry on eUpgrade certificates, adding a benefit for premium Aeroplan cardholders, and kicking off a one-time rollover.
Here's what Aeroplan elites need to know about the changes to eUpgrade credits.
Aeroplan Adjustments to eUpgrades
Earning Aeroplan elite status is the key to earning eUpgrades. You can achieve elite status by crediting flights to the Aeroplan program, earning 100,000 Aeroplan points in a calendar year through the program's “Everyday Status Qualification,” or picking up the Aeroplan® Credit Card.
And after you earn any tier of elite status, you'll collect 20 eUpgrades. You can rack up additional credits from eligible Flight Pass activity, choosing them through Select Benefits, and earning Threshold Rewards.
Traditionally, eUpgrades carried an expiry date that depended on when you earned them. But to alleviate confusion, Air Canada has changed the validity of eUpgrades. From July 1, 2024, eUpgrades are valid for 12 months from the date they were earned. The validity of eUpgrades you earn before July 1 won't change.

Additionally, the eUpgrade rollover benefit will be replaced by extended eUpgrade validity. In other words, if you have a premium Aeroplan credit card, your eUpgrades will expire if not redeemed after 24 months from date of issue. “Premium” Aeroplan cards include:
- American Express® Air Canada® Card
- American Express® Aeroplan® Business Reserve Card
- American Express® Aeroplan® Corporate Reserve Card
- American Express® Aeroplan® Reserve Card
- TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege Card
- CIBC Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege Card
And lastly, Aeroplan will honor a one-time rollover for premium card holders. Up to 50 eUpgrade credits earned through June 30, 2024 will be rolled over into 2025 and feature a new expiry date of January 15, 2026.

Final Thoughts
If you've got Aeroplan elite status, Air Canada simplified the expiry policy for eUpgrade certificates. Come July 1, 2024, all eUpgrades you earn will carry the same expiry date. Air Canada also incentivizes applying for a premium Aeroplan credit card if you don't already have one. It'll double your eUpgrade validity from 12 to 24 months. However, note that the cards Air Canada refers to as “premium” are only available for Canadian applicants.
