Airline shopping portal promotions are a great way to earn extra miles for your next flight. Currently, two airline shopping portals have Back to School promotions, offering up to 4,500 bonus points together with eligible spending through August 8.

Bonuses from airline shopping portals come in addition to the rewards you will earn through the shopping portals and from making purchases with a rewards-earning credit card. That means you can triple-dip on rewards with your online purchases.

These promotions last far longer than the average shopping portal offers. Here are all the details.

Current Airline Shopping Portal Promotions

School summer holidays are in full swing, and the Back to School promotions are now coming out. The first two have arrived from Southwest and United. After reaching the spending threshold in both shopping portals, members will earn up to 4,500 bonus miles.

Both United and Southwest portals finally brought back three spending tiers to earn bonus points, and both offers end on August 8, 2025. We will most likely see more airlines launching their Back to School promotions in the coming days.

Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping portal promotion

Rapid Rewards members can earn up to 2,000 bonus points on eligible spending in the Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping portal through August 8, 2025.

  • 250 bonus points after spending $50 (up to 5X bonus rewards)
  • 1,000 bonus points after spending $250 (up to 4X bonus rewards)
  • 2,000 bonus points after spending $500 (up to 4X bonus rewards)

United MileagePlus Shopping portal promotion

United MileagePlus members can earn up to 2,500 bonus miles on eligible spending in the United MileagePlus Shopping portal through August 8, 2025.

  • 500 bonus miles after spending $150 (up to 3.3X bonus rewards)
  • 1,500 bonus miles after spending $350 (up to 4.3X bonus rewards)
  • 2,500 bonus miles after spending $600 (up to 4.2X bonus rewards)

Key terms and conditions

  • Both promotions end at 11:59 p.m. ET on August 8, 2025.
  • Qualifying purchases exclude returns, cancellations, shipping, taxes, gift cards, and certain ineligible products.
  • Allow up to 10 weeks after the promotion ends for bonus miles to post.
  • Purchases are cumulative; you don’t need to reach the spending threshold in one transaction or on a single day.
  • Bonus miles from American AAdvantage portal promotions won't count as Loyalty Points toward status. However, the base earnings will net Loyalty Points.

Our Take

Most months, two or three of the five major U.S. airline shopping portals offer bonus miles when reaching a minimum spend threshold. Strangely, we didn't see any Independence Day promotions this year. Instead, two airlines have launched a Back to School promotion. We should see more airlines with such a promotion later this week.

If you only choose one airline, Southwest is giving the best rewards, offering up to 5X rewards on eligible spending. On the other hand, up to 4.3X rewards from United isn't bad. Maximize both promotions to earn 4,500 bonus miles.

We recommend checking sites like Cashback Monitor to compare portal bonuses to ensure you get the best earning rate on your purchase. Perhaps you're better off earning Amex points through Rakuten and then transferring those points to score domestic flights from 3,000 Amex points. But no matter which shopping portal you use, be sure to use a credit card optimized for online shopping or everyday purchases to further juice your rewards.
