Updated Blue Cash Everyday Features

Without question, this card is more valuable than before, with no increase in cost. Amex has increased the cash back earning rate at U.S. gas stations, created a bonus category for online-retail purchases, and added $264 dollars worth of statement credits for Home Chef and Disney.

If you're curious how the Blue Cash Everyday stacks up against the  Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express—which comes with a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95. annual fee (Rates & Fees)—check out our Blue Cash card comparison post.

Now, let's take a closer look at each of the Blue Cash Everyday benefits.

Online Retail Earning Opportunities

The bonus category for “U.S. online retail purchases” has the potential to shake up the rewards-card market. Until now, the only increased earning rates we’ve seen for online-retail have been short-term promotions—usually sent to a targeted list of cardholders. We’ve also seen limited-time offers to earn extra rewards with payment processors like PayPal or for specific online retailers like Amazon, but never a broad category like this one.

Blue Cash Everyday cardholders will earn 3% back on online retail purchases up to a maximum of $6,000 per year, then 1% for all remaining purchases.

According to the Terms & Conditions:

“the purchase must be made on a website or a digital application (an app) from a U.S. retail merchant that sells physical goods or merchandise directly to consumers”

If this bonus category is applied as generously as that language suggests, this will be a huge win for cardholders! And frankly, quite shocking for a card with no annual fee. (Rates & Fees)

Increased Earning at Gas Stations

Until July 14, 2022, the card earned 2% back at gas stations. Now, the refreshed Blue Cash Everyday earns 3% Cash Back at U.S. gas stations, on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%.

While a 1% increase isn't a massive change, it adds up over time. If you reach $6,000 in annual spend at gas stations, you’ll earn $180 in statement credits at the 3% rate.

$180 Home Chef Credit

The annual $180 Home Chef Credit is a great perk if you enjoy home cooking, without all of the prep. The benefit takes the form of $15 monthly statement credits on eligible purchases of online meal kits. To maximize the benefit, you must make at least one purchase a month to receive the statement credit which is perfect if you hold a regular subscription. Enrollment is required.

$84 in The Disney Bundle Credits

You can receive up to $84 in statement credits each year by charging an eligible Disney Bundle subscription to the card. The benefit takes the form of a monthly $7 statement credit when you spend $12.99 or more each month on an eligible Disney Bundle subscription. Eligible subscriptions include Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. Enrollment is required.

If you already have a subscription or are thinking of getting one, this perk cuts the price in half.

Balance Transfers Are Back

After suspending them during the pandemic, American Express has reintroduced balance transfers. For the first 15 months of card membership, you can benefit from an introductory APR of 0% on purchases and 0% on balance transfers. After that, it is a Variable 19.24% - 29.99% APR. (Rates & Fees)

This is a great perk, especially if you are looking to close another cashback card and switch over to the Blue Cash Everyday. An intro APR of 0% on balance transfers for 15 months can save you a lot of money compared to regular credit-card interest rates. Just note the balance transfer fee: Either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater. (Rates & Fees)

Updated Card Design

The Blue Cash Everyday also got a snazzy design.

Our Take

The Blue family of Amex cards already provides a robust set of features and benefits. The enhancements to the Blue Cash Everyday make the card one of the best no-annual-fee cashback credit cards available.

Until now, 2% seemed to be the highest return banks were willing to offer on cards without an annual fee, so it's great to see these broad and useful categories offering 3% cash back. Hopefully, other card issuers will see what Amex is doing and improve its offerings.

  • How can Home Chef credits be utilized? It isn’t really enough to make me want to order a box. When you are unsubscribed there are frequent offers for discounts to “come back”. Can you use a returning customer offer AND get the $15 back? Because that is about the right price where I would gladly order a box. Otherwise the value isn’t there. Is there any way to take advantage of that monthly? Or can you purchase $15 gift cards and order a few boxes a year with the gift cards?

    • Great questions. It seems that the statement credit is separate from the subscription. So, just whenever you’re ready to order a box, just put it on this card to get $15 back.
