British Airways and Chase have upped the ante in the airline rewards space, offering an increased signup bonus on the British Airways Visa Signature® Card of up to 100,000 bonus Avios.

The latest offer on the British Airways Visa Signature® Card is a tiered bonus. Earn up to 100,000 bonus Avios. Earn 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. Plus earn an additional 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 on your purchases within your first year of account opening.

Eligibility

You're eligible for the British Airways Visa Signature® Card as long as you don't currently hold the card, and it's been 24 months since you last received a bonus on your previous British Airways Visa Card (if applicable).

Before applying, we recommend that you read this post on changes to the approval policy on select Chase cards. If you don't meet the eligibility requirements, you may want to apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card instead, as being a Sapphire Preferred cardmember you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards® to British Airways Avios at a ratio of 1:1.

Breaking Down the Avios Signup Offer

While $20K may appear a comparatively high minimum spend for an airline rewards card, you have 12 months to plan and execute a spending strategy on this card. It is also worth noting that even if you can't reach the $20,000 requirement in the first year, you can still earn a solid 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening, plus earn an additional 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 on your purchases within your first year of account opening.

Additionally, every calendar year you make $30,000 in purchases on your British Airways Visa Card, you'll earn a Travel Together Ticket good for two years.

The Travel Together Ticket lets you bring a passenger for free on an award ticket, but you still need to pay the fees & fuel surcharges, which can be costly on long-haul flights. It's best to use the Travel Together Ticket for business or first class tickets to maximize your miles.

3X Avios per $1 spent on purchases with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and LEVEL, 2X Avios per $1 spent on hotel accommodations, plus 1 Avios per $1 spent on all other purchases. You'll also pay no foreign transaction fees using the card when you travel abroad

The British Airways Visa Card is a Visa Signature card, so you receive more benefits just for holding the card.

Maximizing British Airways Avios

The British Airways Avios award chart is distance-based, so using your Avios for short haul flights is a great way to get value out of them. Short haul “off-peak” flights start at just 4,000 Avios one-way outside the US! Theoretically, you could get 18 one-way flights through the new offer. For more information, check out this post on how to search and book British Airways Avios flights.

You don't have to fly British Airways to take advantage of their lucrative award chart. As a founding member of oneworld® alliance, you can fly any oneworld® partner airline with British Airways Avios. British Airways is also partners with Aer Lingus and Alaska Air, who are not part of the oneworld® alliance.

Some of the most popular partner airlines to use British Airways Avios on are American Airlines, Alaska Air, Cathay Pacific, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and LAN. Some examples of maximizing Avios are:

Short Domestic Hops

You can fly LAX to SFO in economy for only 7,500 Avios and $5 one-way.

Flights to Hawaii

Flights to Hawaii from the West Coast can also be a steal. For example, you can fly from LA to Honolulu for only 12,500 Avios one-way in economy.

You can fly LA to Honolulu in economy for just 12,500 Avios each way.

Flights to Europe

The cheapest award flight to Europe is booking Boston to Dublin with Avios on Aer Lingus. One-way economy flights are only 13,000 Avios! Business class on this route would be 37,500 Avios each way. You can search for Aer Lingus award availability on the Qantas or United website, and then call British Airways to book.

Flights to Mexico

Flying to Mexico is easy with Avios. From Pheonix to Los Cabos International in Mexico, it's only 7,500 Avios and $30(ish) each way in economy, or a smashing 15,000 Avios in business class.

Intra International Flights

Once you get to an international destination, Avios can be extremely helpful in getting around cheaply. For example, if you did travel to Dublin, but wanted to go to London, then you could book a flight for as little as 4,000 Avios and $14.

How to Search & Book BA Avios Awards

You can search and book most British Airways & partner award flights on the British Airways website under the Executive Club tab after signing in to your account. If you don't have an account, you can sign up for free. Alaska Air and Aer Lingus flights require you to find award availability on another website and call BA at 1-800-452-1201 to book your ticket.

There's also no close-in booking fee when redeeming British Airways Avios.

Adding More Avios

You can also top off your British Airways Avios account by transferring in Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy Rewards.

Household Accounts

British Airways allows users to share an account. You can combine your points and redeem your points with up to 7 members. Here are the rules for creating a household account.

Conclusion

Any time a rewards card offers a signup bonus of this size, it's worth thinking about. Avios are a valuable and versatile airline rewards currency with great partners and lots of options both inside the US, and internationally.

  • Are there any disadvantages to Americans getting this card, like not being able to redeem Avios the same way as the British? I heard the Avios program is really meant for a very few select European countries and South Africa.

    • Award Wallet says:

There are no disadvantages, imho. You can redeem Avios for flights on any One World airline, or other partners for flights worldwide.

    • wow who says Avios is meant for a very few select European countries and South Africa?!?! this program is widely considered as the best frequent flyer program for short hop redemptions for US residents… especially those of you in west coast. Redeem it for flights on Alaska air for as little as 4500 and it’s been well known way to fly to Hawaii from west coast on Alaska. Or redeem on American air too for sounthwest or east coast folks. you can travel up and down the coast or fly to Caribbean for almost nothing.

  • PointsMahalo says:

In the top paragraph of this post it says that the $95 fee is waived for the first year. But in the Chase link/application provided it says that the card costs $95 and there is no mention of it being waived.

Also in the eligibility section it says to read the recent, new application rules but on the linked page it says that the new application rules do not apply to the Avios card – this could be mentioned directly in this post.

    Thanks!

  • How long until avios expire? One year?

    • Award Wallet says:

From the British Airways website: “Your Avios stay with you as long as you collect, spend, purchase or share at least one Avios every 36 months.”

  • Just for fun, I tried booking flights to OGG from SFO, OAK, and LAX. Their site says they don’t go there. Same for LAX to Honolulu.
    Same for SFO to LAX.

  • Miles Hustler says:

    when does this expire?

    • Award Wallet says:

Sorry, I haven’t seen an expiration date for this offer. It will probably be around for a month, but I can’t guarantee it.

  • Evelyn Mayblum says:

How are avios points different from regular airline points. Do the stay in British airways or can I transfer them to my chase sapphire account
I go from ft Lauderdale or west Palm beach frequently. What aIRLINES could I use these points on non stop and how many points would be required. Do the points needed change with the season u r flying.
Thank you for your help with t his

    • Award Wallet says:

Avios are airline miles for the British Airways loyalty program. You can’t transfer Avios to Ultimate Rewards points, but you can transfer Ultimate Rewards points to British Airways Avios.

  • Any idea how long this offer will be available? I’d like to wait a bit before applying to give me time to finsh up a minimum spend on another card.

    • Award Wallet says:

Sorry, I haven’t seen an expiration date for this offer. It will probably be around for a month, but I can’t guarantee it.

  • Leon S Kennedy says:

Darn, I wish I had known this when I applied for the BA card 6 months ago!! There is nothing that I can do to get this bonus, right? 🙁

  • Eileen Ortega says:

How do you book a reward flight between American cities? When I go to the BA website and put in Miami to Washington DC, it says that they do not have traffic rights between these two cities. Do you book it on American Airlines? Thanks.

    • Award Wallet says:

You must sign into your British Airways account, and go through the “Executive Club” tab to search for award flights.

  • Thanks for the heads-up! I just got one of these cards with no real problems. Good stuff, since my daughter now is in school near London. You should mention that the fees on some tickets are hellacious–over $1000 for a business fare to London and back. Still a good deal, though.

  • So if I receive the Travel Together Ticket…it says I have to use it on a British Airways mainline flight…but BA doesn’t fly from my city…would I have to book another flight to Boston or NYC in order to use the Travel Together Ticket…or would they let me fly AA to NYC or Boston…as long as the next flight was on British Air?

    • Award Wallet says:

Yes. You would have to book a connecting flight if British Airways doesn’t fly from your city to use the Travel Together Ticket.

  • Are the Avios good for any American Airlines flight? I am logging into the Executive Club section of British Airways but I can’t find a single flight that is available.

  • Not available in Canada. 🙁

  • Hi
Question regarding the British airways companion ticket that you get for spending 30k. Is that just for one flight reservation?
    Thanks
    Dan

  • I applied for this about a week ago, didn’t get instant approval, but just saw it show up in my Chase log-in.

Two questions, if anyone might be able to help:

Language around Travel Together tickets is very specific to BA flights. Any chance OpenSkys falls into that?

Similarly, Avios for upgrades is offered for BA, AA, and Iberia. Again, OpenSkys? And any chance they’ll add Aer Lingus to that?

  • I recently received an update on their points program
“We’re going to be making a change to the Executive Club pricing structure for shorter reward flights originating or terminating within the United States of America. From 2 February 2016, reward flights will start from 7,500 Avios, instead of 4,500 Avios, plus taxes, fees and carrier charges (“TFCs”) from $5.60 USD.

Only those reward flights that currently cost 4,500 Avios for a one way flight in Economy, 9,000 Avios for Business Class and 18,000 Avios for First Class plus TFCs will increase; to 7,500 Avios, 15,000 Avios and 30,000 Avios plus TFCs respectively. All other Avios reward flight pricing will remain the same as it is today.

If you would like to lreceive more about this change, simply click on the link below.”

Is it still a good deal to apply for this card?

  • Sebastian Salazar says:

Are Avíos points available to be used in Avianca and Taca ? If yes , how many points to fly RT Mia-Mga in business ?

  • Hi, can my wife who is currently a second card holder on my BA account apply for this and get the bonus miles? Trying to see if I can double this up! Thanks.
