British Airways and the British Airways Visa Signature® Card offer a great way to bring along a companion. Every calendar year you make $30,000 in purchases on your British Airways Visa Card, you'll earn a Travel Together Ticket good for two years.

While this does seem like a lot to spend, when you use your card for everyday spending and then make a few larger purchases, it can add up quickly. And, it can be well worth it for you since the Travel Together ticket is potentially worth several hundred/thousand dollars as a travel reward.

And the offer on the British Airways Visa already rewards additional spending.

How Does The Travel Together Ticket Work?

Basically, you are receiving a companion ticket when you book a reward flight using your British Airways Visa Card. You will get a ticket allowing your travel partner to accompany you on the same flight, in the same cabin, and all you have to do is pay any associated fees or taxes. So, technically, the Travel Together ticket is not a free companion ticket, but the costs are minimal in comparison to a full-priced ticket.

You have to book your own reward flight using only Avios, and not a combination of Avios and cash, which is an option for redeeming for other travel rewards—just not the Travel Together ticket perk. It is possible to purchase Avios to add to your account and then use to redeem for a reward, you just cannot combine cash and Avios.

Redeeming Your Travel Together Ticket

When you have earned enough Avios points to redeem for your travel reward and are ready to use a Travel Together ticket, make sure that you are planning as far in advance as possible so that you have the most options available to you. Although there are not necessarily blackout dates for using the Travel Together companion ticket, there are certainly busier times of year (typically around holidays) which can make it more difficult to secure reservations on your preferred flights. It is also important to know that the flights you choose may be international, but must originate and end in the United States.

Keep Track of Rewards!

It is important to know that your Avios points do expire, so if you have built up a large balance of points, you do want to redeem them before the expiration—which happens after 36 months. The spending thresholds must be met during one calendar year ($30,000), and spending balances cannot be carried over from year to year.

How Valuable is the Travel Together Ticket?

When it comes to travel reward value, it’s good to keep in mind what your perks are really worth. When you redeem your Avios for flights, you still have to pay fees, so using the Travel Together ticket means you are paying the fees for two travelers. This is still definitely cheaper than buying two full-priced tickets, but it has to be worth it to reach the spending threshold.

If you are not a big spender, or you do not pay off your balance in full each month, you might end up paying more than you realize when you have to purchase Avios to make the travel reward or pay interest on your purchases.

The Travel Together ticket is a great value for someone who prefers to travel on British Airways, spends a lot of money each year using a credit card, likes to travel using premium tickets, and has fairly flexible travel plans. It doesn’t work out as well for someone who spends less per year than required. It also is not well-suited for someone who does not have flexibility in their travel plans or someone who primarily travels in coach cabins because then it might not be worth the extra spending required.

  • Jeff Roberts says:

I’ve been trying to get Chase to send me my “Travel Together Ticket” for over 5 months. I call at least every two weeks. 11 calls and 3 with so called supervisors – but still no luck. I’ve reached all of my requirements by spending way over 30k a I get a different excuse with each person I’ve talked to. The last supervisor I talked to said that “they to to have this resolved in the new few months”! BA blames Chase, Chase blames BA… so my guess is that BA and/or Chase is selling another con.

    • Did you log into your BA account and see if it’s there? I don’t think I received an actual voucher. But when I go to book a BA award tix- it asks me if I want to use my voucher and lists the expiration date.

      • Hi Michele – yes I did. I call BA and Chase every month and sometimes every week and talk to “supervisors” or at least they say they are… Still nothing. I’ve spent over 45k this year, 35k the year before and now for the 2nd year in a row, still nothing. I guess I’m just marked in the system some how or another. I’ve given up at this point.
