Cathay Pacific has made it easier for elites to renew their status for 2024 as it continues to build back its route network. The promotion is valid for members whose membership tiers expire between December 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024. With the offer, members can use lower thresholds than usual to renew or upgrade their status in 2024. Also, members can earn bonus status points with the promotion.

Here's how it works.

  • Mid-status benefits due to expire between December 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024 have been extended through December 31, 2024.
  • Bonus status points should post to your account within one month of reaching status.

Promotion Status Earning Requirements

Typically, you need to earn the following number of status points to move between the tiers in the Cathay Pacific program:

  • Silver: 300
  • Gold: 600
  • Diamond: 840

In addition, you need to keep earning these thresholds every year to renew your status. However, with the promotion, existing elites, Silver, Gold, and Diamond, can renew their status by reaching a lower threshold. And they will also receive bonus status points in some cases.

The promotion status requirements for Cathay Pacific Silver members are as follows:

Status Points Required Promotion Offer
0–209 Renew as a Green member in 2024
210–299Renew as a Silver member in 2024
300–419Renew as a Silver member in 2024 and receive 100 bonus Status Points
420–599Upgrade to Gold member in 2024
600–1,199Upgrade to Gold member in 2024 and receive 200 bonus Status Points

The promotion status requirements for Cathay Pacific Gold members are as follows:

Status Points Required Promotion Offer

210–299Renew as a Silver member in 2024
300–419Renew as a Silver member in 2024 and receive 100 bonus Status Points
420–599Renew as a Gold member in 2024
600–839Renew as a Gold member in 2024 and receive 200 bonus Status Points
840–1,199Upgrade to Diamond member in 2024

The promotion status requirements for Cathay Pacific Diamond members are as follows:

Status Points Required Promotion Offer
0–209 Renew as a Green member in 2024
210–299Renew as a Silver member in 2024
300–419Renew as a Silver member in 2024 and receive 100 bonus Status Points
420–599Renew as a Gold member in 2024
600–839Renew as a Gold member in 2024 and receive 200 bonus Status Points
840–1,199Renew as a Diamond member in 2024
1,200+Renew as a Diamond member in 2024 and receive 400 bonus Status Points.

Silver Members Disincentive

In trying to differentiate between the status levels, Cathay has disincentivized Silver members from pursuing top-tier status with the promotion. Looking at the tables, once a silver member earns 600 status points, they will be upgraded to Gold and receive a bonus of 200 status points. However, that is where the promotion ends for them, and no matter what they earn after that, there are no easier status requirements or additional bonus status points to be earned. Therefore, if they went all out to earn Cathay points and picked up 1,200 status points, they would earn Diamond status with no extra bonus points.

Compare that with Gold and Diamond members who, if they earned 1,200 status points, would end up as Diamond members with 400 bonus status points in their account. This raises the question: What incentivizes Silver members to pursue anything beyond 600 points and Gold status? Perhaps Cathay will let us know.

Our Take

Any time a program makes it easier to earn or retain status, it is welcome news. Doubly so in the case of Cathay, which is operating a much-reduced network compared to pre-COVID offerings, reducing the opportunities to fly and earn status points.
