Delta has announced that its regional and global upgrades for Platinum and Diamond Medallion members can now be used on Aeromexico. There are some restrictions for which flights you can use your upgrades, but the fact that Delta is adding this functionality is great for SkyMiles members — we can't complain about additional opportunities to redeem upgrades.

Regional Upgrades

You can use your regional upgrades under the following conditions:

  • Delta-marketed short-haul flights operated by Aeroméxico which include intra-Mexico flights, and flights between Mexico and the United States, Canada, Central America, Caribbean, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela
  • Basic Economy fares (E-class) are not upgradable

Global Upgrades

Global upgrade certificates can be used on any Aeromexico flights that include an international flight or connection as part of the itinerary not covered by a regional upgrade.

Overall

This is great news if you are a Delta flyer who uses Aeromexico, which is the first partner added for global and regional upgrade eligibility since Virgin Atlantic last year. Global and regional upgrades are selected by Platinum and Diamond members, as one of their yearly choice benefits. There are multiple benefits members can choose from, from upgrade certificates to Delta Sky Club membership, and choice benefits are expanding further for 2018.

It is no doubt that we see this functionality added given that Delta owns 49% of Aeromexico (the same as they own in Virgin Atlantic), but who's to complain?

  • Aeromexico is not the most aspirational airline to travel on. Using them on Delta is probably much better

  • Sounds great…I am so close to Platinum!

  • I do not have status with Delta so this change does not impact me.

  • Well, I won’t complain about the added benefits and functionality. Not for this. Any benefit, even small, is nice. But the long term concern is the consolidation of power among the legacy carriers and their stake in other brands. Hopefully competitors will continue to rise up for the good of all.
