American Airlines AAdvantage members can claim a free gift this holiday season plus a chance to win one of six amazing prizes — all of which include 500,000 bonus AAdvantage miles. You must register by December 16, 2020 to claim your free gift and have a chance to get one of the bigger prizes.

Free Gift for AAdvantage Members

Claim your free gift from American Airlines AAdvantage

American Airlines has announced a free gift for all its members. Most members should have already received an email from American Airlines. With the email, you can click the link to register before December 16 in order to receive your free gift.

Can't find the email? Try this link. Or, you can access the Promotions tab of your AAdvantage account to activate the gift directly.

What Gifts Are Members Receiving

Buried in the terms and conditions, AA notes that “your gift is based off your membership, travel with American Airlines and other account and transaction-related activity.” So, not surprisingly, we have seen a variety of reports.

Many non-elite members have reported only receiving 100 bonus miles, while Executive Platinum members generally receiving 250 miles. Other gifts include award miles, a complimentary Main Cabin Extra seat, or even an Admirals Club One-Day Pass.

American Airlines has not disclosed what all the possible gifts are, nor what the chances are for receiving them. We would love to hear what gift you received. Feel free to share in the comments below.

Bonus Miles on American Airlines Flights in 2021

By registering for this gift, American Airlines will also automatically enroll you in an offer to earn double miles in early 2021. Members will earn double miles on up to four flights between January 1 and February 28, 2021. However, this bonus is only for flights in premium cabins (premium economy, business, first class). You'll need to register for the promotion before booking a flight for the flight to be eligible for bonus miles.

AAdvantage Sweepstakes

When you register to collect your gift, you'll also be automatically entered into the sweepstakes to win one of six grand prizes:

  • 5 winners will receive 500,000 bonus miles, and an all-inclusive four-night stay for them and one guest at Hyatt Ziva or Hyatt Zilara Resorts.
  • 1 winner will receive 500,000 bonus miles, and a three-night stay for them and up to three guests to Universal Orlando Resort, including park passes and round-trip flights.

However, this part of the promotion isn't open to all AAdvantage members. Only U.S. residents 18 or older are eligible to enter the sweepstakes. The winners will be announced around December 18, 2020. Prizes must be claimed within 5 days of the announcement.

See the full rules and regulations of the sweepstakes, including who can apply, who you can take with you to Orlando (if you win), etc.

Our Take

If you're not yet an AAdvantage member, you can sign up before December 16 to redeem your free gift and be entered into the sweepstakes. Also, note that the taxable value of the grand prizes is between $12,800 and $15,470. So, you'll be liable for taxes on this amount. It's unclear how much of that prize value is assigned to the 500,000 AAdvantage miles, but AAdvantage miles are currently on sale for a steep 2.33¢ per mile.

The general gift might not be that generous, but it's better than nothing and has no strings attached. If you're an AAdvantage member, keep an eye out for your email or just go directly to your account and activate your free gift and a chance to win the grand prizes. Good luck!

AwardWallet Tip of The Day
Did you know that you have a personal referral link in your AwardWallet profile? If you invite people to AwardWallet using your referral link, you will receive an AwardWallet upgrade coupon for every five members you invite. Also, if these users upgrade to AwardWallet Plus, we will credit your AwardWallet account with AwardWallet Bonus points, which can be redeemed for points and miles in your program of choice. We spend roughly 50% of the revenue we receive from those referrals to purchase those miles for you. All of this can be tracked via the Invite to AwardWallet widget in the left navigation bar on your Accounts page.

I want to register for a free trip American Airlines

  • IGNACIO MEDINA says:

Didnt have too much luck, just got 100 free miles which although arent much, are useful to extend the exipry!

  • 100 AAdvantage miles on both my family member accounts. I’m happy with free miles!

  • I got the 100 miles. I have been unable to fly this year so at least this will stop my existing miles expiring.

  • I finally got the 100 Miles!

  • No status with American Airlines. Received 100 miles with this promotion but I’ll take it!

  • I received a 100 miles bonus.

  • Danielle Witte says:

Thanks for the 100 bonus miles

  • leonardo Saubaber says:

Gracias por la info, poseeo bastantes millas por American y un pasaje pendiente para viajar en mayo. Me voy a inscribir en el programa tal vez obtenga las millas que me faltan para un viaje gratis

  • Thanks. Score! My gift was a one-day Admiral’s Club pass. It will be used next week when I am flying American 1st with a significant lay over at an airport where the Admiral’s Club is, with the pass, the only open lounge I would be able to use at that airport as all the other lounges I would otherwise have access to are still closed. With the lowering of offerings, even in 1st during flights, this will prove to be very beneficial (even with the lowering of offerings in lounges).

  • I got a preferred seat coupon. Not especially valuable, but given that it was free, I certainly can’t complain.

  • I registered for my gift on the 3rd. A very disappointing seat selection coupon. Probably won’t get used, since due to COVID my trips on AA are pushed past the expiration date of Feb 28, 2021. Ohh well, here’s to hoping for one of the top prizes!

  • I just got the 100 miles. 🙁

  • Sheng lung lien says:

The blog is very helpful. I would not know the bonus gift if I did not receive this blog.

  • 100 miles and double miles through Feb. Not much but it was unexpected.

  • Nice! My free gift was 100 miles, but it’s better than nothing. Crossing my fingers, and hoping to win bigger!

  • Great! Just registered and got 100 bonus miles. Finger’s crossed on the grand prize.

  • I received two 500-mile upgrade certs, an Avis one-class upgrade offer and the chance to earn four more certs. Nothing special, but no complaints here. 🙂

  • Thanks for the heads up! I received “1 Preferred seat coupon and a car class upgrade + double miles with Hertz (Restrictions apply.)” What’s a preferred seat coupon? Is that a free flight booked into a preferred seat, or is it an upgrade to a preferred seat after I pay for a flight?

    • AA’s preferred seats are seats toward the front (or back in the case of some international planes) of the cabin that doesn’t provide any more legroom but may be more desirable. The only time I’d splurge on these as a non-elite is at the back of some international planes where the cabin narrows from 3 seats by the window to just 2. That makes these great for couples traveling together.

  • Mary Henning says:

Nine non-elite family members all received gifts of 100 miles.

  • I received the Executive Platinum gift of 250 miles. My family members have all gotten the 100 miles, even those in Canada. So this is one (small) benefit that is not for US members only.

  • Nice idea but little surprising that only 100 miles offered. I guess it’s better than zero mile 🙂

  • Received 100 miles. Better than nothing. Thanks AA!

  • 100 free miles posted immediately

I’d probably pass on the Orlando prize – I doubt I’d use that trip and the tax makes the 500K miles pretty expensive (although less than 2.33 cents/mile!)

  • I didn’t get the email, so this post was great as I clicked on the link to register and received 100 bonus points.

  • After all the hype AA delivered a big disappointment 100 miles

  • 100 miles what a joke

  • Thanks for this; haven’t received the email but logged into the account and redeemed the promotion for 100 miles.

  • Sandra Pilatzke says:

I just registered for this today, I am a “non-elite member” as I have not flown much this year for work. However, once I registered, I was notified my gift was 100 bonus miles as confirmed in the blog.

  • I only got the 100 bonus miles. But hey that’s better than nothing!

  • Kelly Buresh says:

I am an Executive Platinum member and I received four 500 Mile Upgrades as the gift. I won’t be complaining since these are great to use for family members to upgrade them when we travel together.
