Amex Membership Rewards cardholders, and Discover cash back bonus cardholders can snag some great savings on Amazon.com when using at least one point to pay for their purchase. Amex cardholders can save $30 on a $60 purchase, while Discover cardholders can save $10 on a $30 purchase. Both promotions run through December 31, 2019, but there is a strong possibility they could be cut short. To benefit from the savings, you will have to use points to pay for all or part (minimum 1 point) of your purchase. Although these offers are targeted, they seem to be widely available.

Our Take

Although the intention here is clearly to get folks to link their Membership Rewards and Discover accounts to Amazon for frequent use, the minimum of one point makes this basically equivalent to $30 and $10 for free. The rate of 1 cent per point on Membership Rewards makes it a very bad value to spend more than 1 point towards your purchase (we'd put MR points at closer to 2.5 cents per point for the savvy points collector). With Discover, the rate should be the same as the cash back you earn anyway, so there's no downside to using more points if you have them.

Considering you can buy virtually everything under the sun on Amazon, this is exactly the kind of promotion we love. Minimal effort for a great return. The “sold-by-Amazon” requirement can make this slightly more challenging, but the option to buy gift cards you'll use later makes this an easy win. The only question is what you will be buying on Amazon?
