In a return of a periodic promotion, American Express cardholders have the opportunity to save 20% off Amazon purchases when they use Membership Rewards points to pay for at least part of their purchase.
Using just 1 Membership Rewards point qualifies as redeeming for “part” of a purchase, which means you can save your high-utility points for more-valuable redemptions. Those who take advantage of this offer can save 20% on up to $250 of purchases for up to $50 in savings.
- Direct link to register for this offer.
- This promotion runs until April 30, 2020, or until 40,000 customers have redeemed the offer.
- This promotion is available only to Amazon.com customers with an eligible Membership Rewards points card issued in the United States.
- The offer applies only to purchases where Membership Rewards points are used for at least a portion of the purchase and the promotion is applied at checkout.
- The offer only applies to products shipped and sold by Amazon.com. This excludes third-party sellers but currently includes third-party gift cards that are sold by Amazon.
- The maximum benefit you may receive from this offer is $50 per Amazon account.
How Many Points Should You Use
When redeeming Membership Rewards points for Amazon, you'll only save 0.7 cents per point. That's far less than the value you can get by redeeming points through Amex's travel partners.
As noted above, you only need to apply 1 Membership Reward point. So, we recommend entering the minimum of $0.01 in the “pay with points” section. That will result in only one Membership Reward being applied to your purchase while still providing a 20% discount.
However, these are not normal times. If you are struggling financially due to the COVID-19 outbreak, you may opt to cash out your Membership Rewards points at a suboptimal rate.
Save Even More With Amex Offers
Amex Offers are a valuable and often underutilized benefit of being an American Express cardmember. Targeted cardmembers can earn bonus points or cash back for using an Amex card to shop at participating merchants. And Amex will periodically offer bonus points for shopping at Amazon.
If the 20% savings wasn't enough to entice shoppers, earning bonus points might just tip the scale. Right on cue, a new Amex Offer for Amazon popped up this week offering 5X additional Membership Rewards per dollar spent:
Amex Offers are personalized, so not every cardholder will be eligible for this promotion. Even if you are targeted, individuals with more than one Amex card may see the offer for one card but not another. Keep in mind that each individual can only enroll in a particular Amex Offer on one card.
If you are targeted for this offer on multiple American Express cards, carefully consider which card will earn you the most before enrolling. If you are a cardmember of The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express and this account is targeted, this card is the clear cut favorite. The Blue Business Plus earns 2x Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 in purchases each year, then 1x thereafter. That makes this card the best Membership Rewards-earning card for everyday purchases.
Other cards that can potentially earn more than 1x on everyday spend include The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express and the The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express cards. Both of these cards provide a points bonus for making more than a particular number of transactions each month.
However, the Membership Rewards points earned from this Amex Offer will outweigh any card-based spend return. So, don't fret if you don't have this Amex Offer on these cards.
Do you need something that you can buy from Amazon? If so, this promo is a no-brainer. Whether it's your typical Amazon purchases, restocking cleaning supplies, or even buying third-party gift cards, you can save 20% when you redeem just 1 Amex Membership Rewards point.
This is a great opportunity for those ordering more delivery than usual these days to buy discounted gift cards for their restaurants or delivery services of choice. Add further savings by applying a targeted Amex Offer to your card before you make your purchase.
