Booking MGM Properties With Marriott Bonvoy Points

Integrating MGM properties into Marriott's portfolio means you can do more with your Bonvoy points. Specifically, a dozen more properties in Las Vegas are accessible with an easy-to-learn points currency, plus several other resorts and casinos scattered across the eastern half of the United States.

How to book MGM properties with Marriott points

You can easily book awards by visiting Marriott's website and logging into your Bonvoy account. Enter your stay details, like destination and intended dates, and then check “Use Points/Certificates.”

Marriott has thousands of properties worldwide, so it shouldn't be surprising when 40+ hotels pop up after searching “Las Vegas,” for example. But if you click “Brands,” you can select the collections that MGM properties will fall into. That way, you can pick from a shorter list.

After deciding on a hotel and a room, enter your details, finish, and pay. Unfortunately, resort fees aren't waived on award bookings, which can be hefty at MGM properties — unless you're an Ambassador Elite.

Using a Marriott co-branded credit card is an easy way to bank Marriott Bonvoy points on the resort fee portion of your award stay. Almost all of Marriott's credit cards earn 6X points per dollar spent at properties participating in the Bonvoy program, which is a great return.

What Do Marriott Award Nights at MGM Properties Cost?

Traditionally, the average cash price for a stay in Las Vegas fluctuates throughout the week. Some days are cheaper, while others, like Fridays and Saturdays, are comparatively more expensive. The MGM properties bookable through Marriott are no exception.

Moreover, you will also have to pay resort fees per night unless you are a Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite. This fee can be rather punitive, as it varies by property and can be as high as $150 per night.

But to put the overall costs into perspective, let's look at an example. Rooms at the ARIA Resort & Casino hotel in Las Vegas can be booked for about an average of 23,000 Marriott points a night during the week. You'll also be on the hook for $62.36 out of pocket — a $55 resort fee and a $7.36 charge for taxes and fees.

This same room is otherwise available for $221.09 (taxes and fees included), so this award night amounts to 0.69¢ cents per point. For reference, AwardWallet users redeem Marriott points for 0.94¢ apiece, so this is a subpar redemption.

It's a similar story, even on nights that require more points. And this is true at every property. For example, it's pretty common to see award nights available at the ARIA from 140,000 points. On this redemption — after factoring in taxes and fees and comparing it to the pricey cash rate ($852!) — you're looking at 0.56¢ per point.

As you can see, it is important to search carefully for the best rate and utilization of your Marriott Bonvoy points. Also, compare the points rate to the cash cost — it may be better to save your Marriott points for a higher value redemption and pay cash for your MGM Resort stays instead. Marriott prices its awards dynamically, but that doesn't always mean the cash rates are higher!

Building a Balance of Marriott Bonvoy Points

Marriott Bonvoy points are easy to earn. This means future free nights are achievable with little effort. Did you also know there are almost a dozen ways to earn points without stepping foot in a hotel? Let's look at the primary ways to earn lots of Bonvoy points:

Stay at Marriott properties

Earning points on stays is the most straightforward way to build a balance of Marriott points. Depending on the brand you stay at, you could earn between 2.5X and 10X points per $1 spent. And if you're an elite status holder, you'll earn a bonus on top of that base amount.

Additionally, you can multiply the points you've earned on your most recent stay by up to 4X. While buying points outright is sometimes cheaper (more on this below), it can still be useful in the right circumstances.

Spend on a Marriott credit card

Many Marriott credit cards are split between Chase and American Express issuers. Here's a snapshot of the cards open to new applicants and the welcome bonuses you'll find:

Purchase Marriott points

Unless there's a bonus, Marriott will sell you Bonvoy points for 1.25¢ apiece. Buying points can make sense in the right circumstances, such as topping off your account for a high-value stay. However, buying points is generally a bad idea, as the price you'll pay is often more significant than the value you'll get when you redeem them.

Final Thoughts

MGM's partnership with Marriott Bonvoy brings exciting opportunities for members of both programs. From tier matching and point transfers to new properties to redeem your points at, there are plenty of ways to make this partnership work for you.
