Hertz sent an email to its members outlining upcoming changes to its Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Program. Some changes have already taken effect, while others are coming in later this year. Unsurprisingly, not all changes are positive. The most negative change is Hertz moving to a fixed lifespan for its points.
Here's what you need to know about the changes to the Hertz Gold Plus rewards program.
Hertz Gold Plus Rewards New Fixed Points Expiration
From December 31, 2024, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points will have a five-year fixed expiration deadline. Your points will expire after five years, regardless of your account's activity level. This is a further negative development since Hertz changed its expiration policy last year to points that expire if you have no activity on your account for 12 months.
This allowed regular renters to have their points live indefinitely since their activity always extended their validity. Sadly, this will no longer be the case, and your points will expire after five years, no matter what you do.

New Hertz Points Transfers
Members can now transfer points to other family members. The family member must be a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards member. Points can be transferred once per year.
Elimination of Award Cancellation Fees
As part of the incoming program changes, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards announced that it will eliminate its award cancellation fees. To be eligible, the cancellation must be made before the rental pickup. Unlike the points expiration policy, this new policy takes effect sooner and will be valid from September 1, 2024.
Track Your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points Expiration with AwardWallet
Now that Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points have a fixed lifespan, keeping track of your points balance is more important than ever. Even though five years is a long time, it is long enough for you to lose track of your points and have them expire unnoticed. Letting AwardWallet track your Hertz account is simple. All you need to do is log in and link your Hertz account, and you are set and ready to go.
Our Take
This news is a bit of a mixed bag. Eliminating award cancellation fees is great news and something to be welcomed. However, changing to a fixed points expiration policy is negative. Despite the new points' lifespan being relatively long at five years, it is still a negative and a direct devaluation to some of Hertz's most loyal customers. Since they could keep their points active indefinitely due to regular rental activity.
