I've been a vocal advocate of the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card for several reasons. First is the ability to earn 3X points in an all-encompassing travel category (eating out and ordering in; gas, rideshares, and transit; flights, hotels, homestays, and car rentals) and streaming services. Points earned can be worth up to 1.75 cents each towards paid airfare if you also have the Wells Fargo Visa Signature® Card, and you get all of this for an annual fee of $0. Using points for paid airfare means no worries about award-seat availability, and these cards give a possible higher return than the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

One of the unsung benefits of the Wells Fargo Propel Amex is the Go Far Rewards Earn More Mall which is giving me huge earning rates at select retailers for in-store purchases. This month, for example, I can earn 40X points on my first purchase at a CVS with a cap of 2,500 bonus points, or 40X on $62.50 on my first purchase after activating the offer.

CVS has an excellent gift-card selection (often found on multiple display racks throughout the store). Based on previous gift-card purchases, I can confirm that these purchases will earn bonus points. The CVS gift-card rack has pretty much any gift card you'd like and can use. The $62.50 cap means a variable-load gift card was my best bet. With Uber Eats having launched at our address just a few weeks ago (and given how much I am on the road), an Uber gift card seemed like a great selection.

My Go Far Rewards are currently worth 1.5 cents each towards paid airfare booked through the Go Far Rewards travel portal, meaning my $62.50 purchase today will earn the max 2,500 points, worth $37.50 in airfare. That equates to a cool 60% discount on the Uber gift card or 60% off my next Uber ride or Uber Eats meal. In my experience, it has taken two business days after making the in-store purchase to receive an e-mail confirming I used the Earn More Mall offer.

Increase Your Savings

Believe it or not, there are two ways to increase your 60% discount. The first is taking advantage of CVS ExtraBucks promotions where you essentially earn CVS credit for buying a certain amount of select gift cards. Last week at CVS, you could earn $10 in ExtraBucks if you bought at least $50 of Chilis, Spotify or Hulu gift cards. This means a $62.50 purchase with your enrolled Wells Fargo Propel Amex would earn you $37.50 in flight credit plus $10 in CVS rewards equating to a total discount of 76% off your Chili's, Spotify or Hulu gift card purchase.

The second way to increase your savings is by spending $50,000 in a calendar year on the Wells Fargo Visa Signature card. This makes all your Go Far Rewards worth 1.75 cents each towards paid airfare booked through the Go Far Rewards travel portal. A $62.50 purchase at 40X points would yield $43.75 worth of airfare or a 70% discount on your CVS purchase. If you bought the targeted gift cards offering $10 in CVS ExtraBucks and are getting the maximum 1.75 cents per point, your total discount on those select cards would be an astounding 86%. Not bad when you pay $0 in annual fees.

Earn More Mall Caveats

The 40X earning rate at CVS appears to be targeted—not all Wells Fargo Propel Amex members have the same offer. But all cardholders seem to have significant earning rates of 15X-25X. There isn't yet a rhyme or reason to decipher why some members (like me) are always targeted for the highest offers, so fingers crossed that you're one of the lucky ones. In addition to CVS, for February I can also earn 40X points on my first in-store purchase at P.F. Changs, Bloomingdale's, AMC Theaters, and Massage Envy.

These earn rates have been fairly standard for the last 6 months with new offers loading to my Earn More Mall at the beginning of each month. Caps on bonus points for each participating merchant are different and rather arbitrary. You can earn up to 7,500 points at Bloomingdale's (a first purchase of $187.50) or up to 4,000 points at AMC theaters (a first purchase of $100). You MUST activate the offers online before making your purchase by clicking on the individual offer for your card.

Bottom Line

60% off at any of the participating monthly merchants has been fantastic for me, and today's score of over $60 in Uber credit for $25 is icing on the cake. The fact that this technique is available paying $0 in annual fees with the Wells Fargo Propel Amex and Wells Fargo Visa Signature card makes this something everyone should be taking advantage of on a monthly basis. I actually get really excited towards the end of every month when it's time to see what is going to pop up on the Earn More Mall that offers a minimum of 60% savings. If you've found great deals with the Earn More Mall, we'd love to hear from you in the comments.
