Discover is never one to be left behind. Already offering a top-value cash back card, they've now joined the travel rewards space with the Discover it® Miles. As with other Discover card options, the Discover it® Miles has some great perks, low fees, and the terrific customer service that Discover is well known for.

If you are looking to get a travel card that has good spending benefits and perks, and you don’t want to shell out a lot for annual fees, then take a look at what Discover Miles has to offer. You might be pleasantly surprised with what you find!

No Annual Fee

One of the highlights of the Discover it® Miles is that there is no annual fee. For those who are not traveling frequently, it is not always worth paying a high annual fee – even when the perks are big. With the Discover it® Miles, you get travel rewards and benefits included for free, just for being a cardholder. Also, there is an introductory APR of 0% on purchases for 14 months, followed by a variable rate of 13.99% - 24.99%.

Solid Earning Potential

With the Discover it® Miles, you earn 1.5 points for every dollar spent on every category, although, unfortunately, there is no sign on bonus with the Discover it® Miles. You won’t receive a physical signup bonus after the first few months of spending, you will have your points for the entire first year doubled when you reach your first anniversary. That means that you will receive a nice 3x miles per $1 on ALL your spending for the first 12 months. Depending on your spending patterns, this could add up to a big bonus, because there is no cap on the number of points that can be doubled. This is a very good return on your spending.

Very Flexible Redemption Options

With Discover Miles, you have the option of redeeming your points for travel credits when you book flights, hotels, rental cars, and other travel expenses (including commuter cards and cab fares!), or you can get statement credits or cash back rewards instead. You can redeem your miles for cash and travel at the same redemption rate. That's not the case with all fixed-value travel points. For example, 10,000 Discover it Miles is worth $100 in travel, or $100 cash back.

Redeeming your miles for travel statement credits is where can find the most value. Using your Discover Miles for travel expenses that your airline miles or hotel points can't be used for is a good strategy. B&Bs, cruises, and award flight taxes and fees are all good options. You can even use your travel rewards to get statement credits for your public transportation to get to work if you’d like!

One of the great things about the Discover it® Miles is that you can book your travel any way you like, and you are not limited to using a special portal or jumping through any hoops. Found a great award ticket but not in the same alliance your Miles are held in, or maybe an error fare or Black Friday deal just too good to miss – Purchase it with Discover it® Miles and erase the charge. This makes it convenient for those who love discount travel sites and deals, or for those who have their own personal travel agent that they want to work with.

For frequent flyers, the Discover it® Miles also offers a credit for any Wi-Fi charges during any flight, up to $30 per year, which does not cost you any points! Any time you can get something free on a no annual fee credit card is a good thing. Add the fact that there are no foreign transaction fees, and the numbers on this card start to stack up as a top rewards card.

Having the Discover it® Miles also gives you access to their online shopping portal. You can receive multiple points per $1 when you shop online just by going through the portal on the Discover website. The Discover it® Miles also gives you a look at your FICO credit score for free every month.

The Discover it® Miles is a great option for the first year with Discover doubling your miles, but come the end of that introductory period and the earn rate drops to 1% for all purchases. Like other Discover cards, you have access to great customer service, rewards, and many other solid perks. The doubling of your points in the first year can result in a large sign-on bonus, depending on your rate of spending. Though it is preferable to receive a sign-on bonus with any rewards card you apply for, the Discover it® Miles has great perks for a no annual fee card.

One of the potential problems for cardholders is that Discover is not as widely accepted around the world as MasterCard and Visa, so you will want to check ahead if you are planning any international travel. The fact that there are not any foreign transaction fees is great, but if you can’t even make the foreign transactions, this perk is irrelevant.

For having no annual fees and a great intro APR offer, the Discover it® Miles deserves consideration if you are in the market for a travel credit card. By allowing users to make their own travel plans, however, they like to make them, Discover offers great flexibility for redemption, as well.
