Overall
The Air Berlin saga has carried on for the whole summer, with the fate of the airline confirmed only recently. One major issue for Topbonus members has always been what will happen with their miles, especially after the program filed for insolvency in late August. Luckily there is a way out via Etihad; otherwise, millions of miles could be lost by Topbonus members.

governments guarantee the loss of bankrupt banks, they should also guarantee airline miles too!
I hope that in the end they will move my Topbonus leftover miles to my Etihad account.
Good for those still with miles in the program.
I’m very glad I didn’t sign up for the Topbonus credit card now. I nearly did, as it seemed to be the only half decent alternative in Germany to M&M cards.
I went with the DKB Hilton Visa instead. I’m glad I did.
Thanks for the reminder
It may not be the best offer ever, as other commenters pointed out, but it sure is better than nothing! It’s a great opportunity to use hard-earned miles that would otherwise die.
It is a very generous offer from Etihad to do this. Though I agree with the other posters that it would have been nice if they had allowed the miles to be converted into their points instead. Points have no value unless they are used, and the airlines actually count on people NOT using them. (The same for the vouchers they give when you’re bumped from a flight). We in the points and miles hobby are an anomaly! Earn and burn!
A pity that you can’t book Business Class flights though 🙁
Better than nothing I guess but still a concern if you collect miles. Who has the greatest potential in the oneworld program to go out of business next? Who is the weakest link I wonder?
Who do you think?
hey guys – do not complain – it’s a gift
AB is bancrupt…., all miles are worth, right – nothing…..
It think it is quite surprising that anything at all is being offered to redeem with Topbonus.
Etihad’s offer is better than nothing. Hope many who hold Air Berlin miles will be able to get free flights with Etihad.
I just checked and I have 500 miles in the account. Doubt I can redeem for anything.
looks like my orphan miles are going to be lost . I was hoping it will be converted to etihad miles as I already have an account .
I’ll use mine – thanks for the Hint!
Looks like my orphan miles will die.
I am hoping a flying good samaritan will fly in and rescue all fo us who now will have “orphan” miles at the soon to be former AirBerlin.
LOL 🙂
Brutal to see Air Berlin go down.
I have to find a way to get rid of my 15k miles 🙁
Since I only had a few miles, it doesn’t really matter to me personally, but it’s nice to see someone offering something. I was expecting nothing for anyone.
I have less than 25K so I am out of luck I guess.
The options for award tickets are very restricted. But at least it is a possibility to avoid further injury.
I hope that eventually there is an airline who will let me transfer my air berlin miles, since i don’t have enough for an award, but don’t want the one i have to go to waste.
Why would any airline honor your AB miles? LH announced they won’t take over the Topbonus program nor will EY do so. The topbonus programme is also huge in debt so there would be no logical reason for any airline to buy anything from Topbonus whatsoever.
I just said “I hope”. One can always hope. 🙂
Happy I never signed up for the sinking ship
It’s not necessarily a “generous” offer, but if you have the miles, it’s absolutely better than nothing.
Not so much, many economy awards on EY are actually more expensive than a regular cash ticket with another airline straight from kayak due to the heavy EY taxes and fees.
I am glad I have never collected Air Berlin miles, I always like flying Lufthansa.
Economy-only though, so it’s not quite such a generous offer from Etihad.
Considering they didn’t have to do anything, I’d say any offer is generous.
Unfortunately, I have less than 25k miles so I think I am out of luck.
