Is it Good Value?
Surprisingly transferring 7 rewards for 1,300 miles is excellent value. Typically, you can redeem 7 rewards for $10 off your purchases. However, AwardWallet members have, on average, been able to redeem their Alaska miles for 2.57¢ per mile. Therefore 1,300 miles would work out at around $34.50. This is significantly better than the $10 you would typically get.
Be Careful with Store Locations
One thing to be careful with is your store and account location. Since this offer is intended for residents of Alaska only and trying to game, the system can see your Just for U Rewards account closed. Several online data points indicate that several out-of-state accounts have been closed after taking advantage of the promotion. However, it is not clear why at this point.
Have the accounts been closed by Just for U Rewards because although people are changing their store choice to one in Alaska, redeeming miles, they then change it back to one outside the state? Or, as the redemptions are hitting Alaska accounts, is the airline picking up that the registered address is out of state and then informing Just for U Rewards?
If you are going to change your Alaska Address and store location to take advantage of this redemption, you need to be careful. Be aware that by doing so, you are taking a risk that you could have your account closed and your point balance forfeited.
Our Take
If you live in Alaska and use Just for U Rewards, this new functionality can be a great earner. The ability to redeem your rewards for Alaska miles at a pretty decent rate leverages even more value from your purchases. However, if you are tempted to try and game the system to take advantage of this new functionality. Keep in mind that it is risky, and you could lose a bunch of points, so it may not be worth it!
