The German-based rental car giant has a generous status match program that works with dozens of partners worldwide. In many cases, your matched status will stick around for life — though certain upgrade perks require some ongoing rentals to keep.

Whether you rent often or just a few times a year, knowing how to leverage a SIXT status match can mean discounted rates, free upgrades, and extra perks on your next trip.

What is SIXT?

SIXT is the fourth-largest car rental company in the U.S. It has an even larger presence overseas, with over 2,200 locations in more than 100 countries. At the time of writing, there are over 100 rental locations in the U.S. across 26 states, more than half of which are at airports. Where SIXT shines is in the quality of its fleet. The focus is on premium cars — primarily of German make, considering SIXT is a German company.

How to retain your SIXT matched status

When matching a status with SIXT, the status will never expire. However, SIXT members will only receive eligible upgrades for the first 12 months of the new status. After that, members will need to complete a required number of car rentals to continue receiving this benefit.

Residents of Belgium, Spain, France, the U.K., Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the U.S. must complete 10 rentals in 12 months to continue receiving upgrades with Gold status. Residents of all other countries must complete 20 rentals in 12 months.
