Southwest has announced a promotion giving you an easier way to earn A-List or A-List Preferred tier status through 2023. This Southwest Tier Status Acceleration promotion counts award flights taken in 2022 towards tier status segment requirements.

How the Southwest Tier Status Accelerator Works

With the new promotion, reward flights will count towards tier status as follows:

  • Your tier status segments will be automatically credited for reward flights taken from January 1 through September 19, 2022.
  • For reward flights taken from September 21 through November 30, 2022, you must register to earn tier status segment credits.

If you are wondering what happens if you took a flight on September 20, 2022? It seems you will not earn any tier credits for some unfathomable reason. Whether Southwest decides to correct this situation or not remains to be seen.

When you take a reward flight, allow up to 72 hours for the tier segment credit to post to your Southwest members account.

What You Need for Southwest Tier Status

Currently, you need to meet the following criteria to earn elite status with Southwest:

  • 25 one-way flights or 35,000 tier qualifying points are required to earn A-List status.
  • 50 one-way flights or 70,000 tier qualifying points are needed to earn A-List Preferred status.

If you have already taken a few reward bookings this year, then these segments now counting towards elite status can go a long way towards hitting your goals. This is especially true if you aim for A-List status with its much-reduced tier segment requirement.

Double Dip On Cash Bookings

Running hand in hand with this offer, you can also earn double the qualifying points for A-List or A-List Preferred tier status when you book and pay cash for your ticket.

  • Both promotions have the same registration page.
  • The promotion is valid for purchases and travel through November 30, 2022.

This new promotion can be very lucrative, especially if you purchase Southwest higher fare classes. Southwest Rapid Rewards members earn between 6X and 12X tier qualifying points per dollar, depending on the fare class.

With this promotion, you will earn between 12X and 24X instead. If you are looking to earn A-List status and purchase Business Select fares, you only need to spend $1,460 to hit your goal.

If you want to hit A-List Preferred and are still purchasing the higher fare classes, you will only need to spend $2,920 to reach your 70,000 qualifying tier points target.

Our Take

If you are a Southwest regular, this promotion is a no-brainer and well worth the few seconds it takes to register. Even if you are targeting A-List Preferred but come up a little short, with this promotion, you are virtually guaranteed to have hit A-List status for 2023 for your efforts!
