Typically, when folks reach out to me for credit card advice, I implore them to open a card offering at least 2% cash back on everyday purchases. That way, you're getting a solid, no-hassle return on your spending. The TD Double Up℠ Credit Card is just that.

The only catch: This card is only open to applicants in select U.S. states. That said, if you're eligible for the card, it can be nothing but rewarding.

TD Double Up Card Welcome Offer

The TD Double Up Card does have a welcome offer; you'll earn $150 cash back (as a statement credit) when you spend $1,000 within the first 90 days after account opening.

To put the offer into perspective, you'll effectively earn 15% cash back on the first $1,000 you spend on the card within the first three months. And this doesn't account for the additional 2% cash back you'll score on all eligible purchases.

TD Double Up Card Earning Rates

The TD Double Up Card‘s earning rates are straightforward, which is one of the card's key benefits. You'll earn 2% Cash Back on all eligible purchases.

TD Double Up Card Benefits

Cardholders of the TD Double Up Card can enjoy four primary benefits. Here's an overview.

Introductory 0% APR on balance transfers

The TD Double Up Card has a 0% introductory APR balance transfers for first 15 billing cycles after account opening. After that 19.24%, 24.24% or 29.24% variable APR based on your credit worthiness.. A balance transfer fee of Intro fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, on transfers made within the introductory offer. After that: Either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater. will apply.

Compared to other cards offering 0% introductory APR balance transfers, the TD Double Up Card stands out; it's much longer than what many others offer.

Cell phone protection

Cell phone protection is one of my favorite secret credit card benefits. I've used it to save hundreds instead of paying for expensive repairs or purchasing a new phone entirely.

The TD Double Up Card features this benefit as part of its Visa Signature designation. Keep in mind that you'll need to pay your monthly cell phone bill with this card to qualify for coverage. Limitations are $500 per claim and up to two claims per 12-month period, with a $50 deductible per claim.

Purchase protections and extended warranty

Thanks to its Visa Signature benefits, the TD Double Up Card also offers several protections for shoppers. The first is theft and loss protection. If you purchase an item with the card that is stolen or damaged due to a covered reason within the first 90 days of ownership, this benefit will cover the replacement, repair, or reimbursement of the eligible item — up to $500 per claim and up to $50,000 in total claims per cardholder.

Another benefit is extended warranty protection. This benefit will add up to one additional year of coverage on select items that you purchase with your TD Double Up Card.

Travel protections

Several travel protections come with the Visa Signature card designation as well.

  • Visa Luxury Hotel collection: Enjoy special guest status at Visa Signature Luxury Hotel properties.
  • Lost luggage reimbursement: Get reimbursed up to $3,000 for your checked or carry-on luggage if your luggage is lost due to theft or misdirection by the common carrier. To take advantage of this benefit, you'll need to purchase your ticket with the TD Double Up Card.
  • Car rental benefits: Enjoy special savings and complimentary rental upgrades (when available) with select agencies.
  • Travel and emergency assistance services: Get emergency assistance by calling the Benefits Administrator.
  • Roadside dispatch: 24/7 roadside service; services rendered are pay-per-use.

Redeeming Rewards With the TD Double Up Card

The TD Double Up Card is branded as a cash-back card. However, it earns points redeemable for cash back. In other words, every dollar spent on eligible purchases earns 2 points.

To redeem those points, you'll have to collect a minimum of 2,500 points, which is equivalent to $25 in rewards. That requires $1,250 worth of spending. Once you reach this threshold, you can redeem points for 1¢ apiece towards cash back, gift cards, merchandise, or travel.

Your rewards will never expire as long as your account is open and in good standing.

Application Restrictions

The most significant restriction on the TD Double Up Card is the geographical restrictions to apply. You'll need to be living in a state that has a TD branch, which includes:

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington, D.C.

Outside of geography, TD Bank has few of the onerous application rules and restrictions you'll find with other issues. There are no published limitations on the number of TD cards you can have at once, nor are there restrictions on the amount of time that needs to elapse between applications. That said, you should remember that frequent card applications can negatively impact your credit score.

Cards That Compete With the TD Double Up Card

There are several competitors in the cash-back credit card space. So, if the TD Double Up Card isn't right for you, there are plenty of other worthy options to consider.

Bottom Line

The TD Double Up℠ Credit Card is worth a look, but only if you live in a state in which the card is open to new applicants. It offers a solid, easy-to-understand rewards structure and some perks that might be worthwhile to cardholders, such as cell phone and lost luggage protection via its Visa Signature designation. It's hard to complain about unlimited 2% cash back on all eligible purchases and no annual fee.

That said, several other cards offer higher sign-up bonuses, better rewards, and more robust benefits than the TD Double Up Card. Thus, this card likely won't be your first choice (or the one that appears at the top of the list when you search “Best Cashback Cards”), but it still deserves a look as you weigh your long-term credit card strategy.
