How Does Capital One Compare to Other Rewards Programs?

Here are the rewards-sharing policies for other transferrable points programs:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards: You can share points between your own Ultimate Rewards earning cards, with a family member living at the same address, or with a business co-owner (for business cardholders).
  • Amex Membership Rewards: You can’t share points with another Membership Rewards account, but you can add someone as an authorized user on your account and then transfer points directly to their hotel or airline loyalty accounts.
  • Citi ThankYou® Rewards: You can share up to 100,000 ThankYou Points with any other ThankYou Rewards member per calendar year (send 100K and receive 100K). But there is a huge caveat: Those shared points are only valid for 90 days from the date they move to another ThankYou account. Then, they expire — no return to sender, no refunds.
  • Marriott Bonvoy: You can transfer up to 100,000 points per calendar year between any two accounts that are in good standing and have each been open for at least 60 days. You can receive up to 500,000 points per year. Transfers can be made online.
  • Capital One Rewards: You can share rewards between any miles-earning accounts with no caps, no fees, and no expiration, and can turn cash-back rewards into miles if you hold both types of cards.

How To Share Capital One Miles

There are two ways to share Capital One Miles: transferring between your own accounts and transferring to another Capital One member.

Transferring between your own accounts

Here's how to move miles between accounts in which you are the owner.

First, log into your Capital One account on your computer or phone, then click “View Rewards” next to your miles balance.

Next, scroll down and click “Move Rewards.”

Finally, choose how many miles to transfer, then confirm.

Transferring to another Capital One member

To transfer miles to another Capital One member, call the number on the back of your card. Provide the name and full card number of the person to whom you'd like to transfer miles.

The Capital One representative will confirm your personal information and ask for the other person's name, card number, and how many miles you want to transfer. After that, they'll confirm that all the information is correct and ask your permission to complete the transfer. Once submitted, the transfer is instant.

To see miles transferred from you to someone else, log on to your Capital One account, click “View Rewards,” and then “Redemptions.” You will see the miles transferred out.

To see miles transferred from someone else to you, log on to your Capital One account, then click “View Rewards,” then “Earn Activity.” You will see the miles transferred in.

The ease of transfer makes it effortless to top off a friend or family member’s account if they intend on transferring miles to a partner program for redemption. It's also useful for transferring miles to whoever holds the highest elite status with an airline partner.

Final Thoughts

The ability to combine miles with any other account holder is an attractive feature for a rewards program. The lack of restrictions with Capital One’s miles sharing is a unique benefit of its transfer program, making it an attractive alternative to Chase, Citi, and Amex.

    this doesnt work right now

How can you transfer Cap 1 miles into spouse’s FF account? He is an authorized user (and account manager for what’s it worth) but does not have a separate Cap1 account? With Chase and Amex you can easily do it since with Chase he is a family member living in the same household and with Amex he is an authorized user. But Cap1?

Capital One points are NO LONGER AVAILABLE to share to someone else. :/

Did you call Capital One and try to transfer points to another cardholder? Unfortunately it looks like Capital One never got around to adding the online transfer option.

Any way to retrieve miles that were lost when a capital one card was closed?

This is a great addition to capital one.

Good to know! Our primary cards are CapOne Venture and Chase Sapphire Reserve. We recently relocated and I’m doing less travel, so the CSR may or may not remain the best card for me. This is another positive for CapOne.

Glad to hear they are becoming more competitive but even with this new benefit I don’t see myself jumping in. Too many other “better” programs out there.

Nice to see an objectively positive headline for a change! 🙂 And, see all the overwhelming positive comments that predictably followed!

I love capital one cards! This is worth getting.

new benefits are always good news!

I only have MBNA and AE cards. Will the Capital One improvement put pressure on other card issuers to do the same for their cards. I am thinking of cancelled my MBNA cards and apply the Capital ONe. I do not want to own too many credit cards. Any suggestions?

Hey Tonia, I definitely understand not wanting to have too many cards. Before you close any accounts, I’d recommend checking out this post on how your credit score is calculated. https://awardwallet.com/blog/tips-managing-credit-score/

It can actually hurt your score to close a card, especially if the card is one of the oldest in your account history, or you have a large credit line relative to your other accounts.

Smaller banks like MBNA are likely never going to try to compete with CapOne on rewards, so you’ll want to look at the major issuers for points that will help you save on travel.

Capital One venture is worth looking at.

Good news. Just wish we could move worthless to us GMC $ over to points/miles/cash!

    Nice perk but no Cap1

This is a great perk and really brings the Capital One cards into line with the other flexible currency cards — and in some circumstances it will make it a more valuable card. My only gripe is how difficult it seems for me to be approved for their cards.

I am always trying to figure out what to do with these points…thanks for the info.

I love that you can use the miles with different airlines. Its so frustrating paying yearly fees for multiple cards because you travel to a lot of different destinations and want the cheapest flight.

It would be nice if other credit cards providers do the same. Let the members to merger the miles of different levels. It is too confused to have different miles of the same credit card providers.

    Nice benefit for card holders.

Capital One just keeps getting better.

Now Capital One Canada needs to take some notes.

Looks like Captial One is trying to jump big time into attracting the frequent traveler community. I’m glad as competition is always good. I’m still on the fence about diving into yet another “currency”. I’ve already got the MR/TY/UR points to deal with but they are certainly tempting me with these benefits that seem to be standing them apart compared to the usual 3.

this is very very helpful feature, hopefully they will include the online functionality soon

Excellent, Thank you for the review!!

This is good news! I hope others will consider allowing this also, but I won’t hold my breath.

I’ve been a long-time Capital One fan and this makes it so much better for multiple card holders. Way to step up above the competition.

This is a reason to celebrate!
    Thanks for sharing!

This is great to hear! Thanks.

Smart move by Capital One. I have a personal Capital One credit card and another company Capital One card .But they have different reward miles. I think lots of travellers like me have more than one Capital One cards but different reward miles. Now I am free to combines the miles and even with my family members. A big praise for Capital One listening to his members. Any comment?

Wow this is too good to be true.
    Very nice…thanks for the post!

Thanks. I’ll add it to my list of JetBlue family pooling and Hyatt points.

Wow. That’s quite unusual but I won’t complain.

A good move in the another direction. Since I am the only one in my family that does the points and miles thing, it doesn’t help me any.
I hope this spreads to Chase, Citi, etc. Would be a nice perk.

    following Chase’s footstep, go capitalone!!

good news, makes their cards look better.

    Pooling is always good!

This seems like a great benefit for Cap 1 users. Wish they had additional earning opportunities.

AwardWallet made my life so much easier. We are a family of four frequent travelers, each with maybe a dozen airline accounts. Keeping track of some 40 (!) award programs used to be a nightmare. Now it’s all there, updated automatically and comparable at a glance. Huzzah!

Wow, hopefully the miles pooling feature will be adopted by other cards.

Hopefully the competition will match this offer. Both my family and friends have too many orphan miles!

Great benefit for cardholders – C1 really trying to take the lead with customer friendly policies….not that it is hard to do that in many respects!
